The Magical First Time

May 31, 2014

    1. The first time I saw one was at an anime convention many years ago. All these owners had their dolls set up on a display table and I was blow away by how beautiful they all looked! It was right around that time that I was really into Rosen Maiden so I guess it made sense for me to be hooked on dolls not long after!

    2. My first doll was also the first bjd I saw in person. She was naked, bald, without any make-up. Nevertheless she was the most awesome thing I' ve ever seen before. She looked like little gentle alien, I hold her very carefully, like she was alive. I'll never forget that wonderfull feeling.

    3. My first time seeing one irl was also when I got my first. It was a super special feeling since I'd been wanting one since I discovered them, five years earlier. I seriously had to make myself wait for something like half an hour or an hour after picking up the parcel, just to calm myself down (and I'm normally a pretty composed person).

I believe I've written it elsewhere as well, but the moment I'll probably never forget as long as I'm in the hobby, was the moment I lifted the top pillow in his box. The stuff I had already picked out with shaking hands, so under that pillow was only the doll itself. I saw him, looked at him, and had to take a few steps back. I walked in a little circle and then I could proceed to actually touching him. It was such a strange feeling (mixed with happiness) actually seeing one, touching one and knowing, on top of that, that it was *my* doll. The first day I barely even dared to pose him :XD:
Anyways, none have topped the feeling of the first one, but I love 'em all to bits! And after the first one they've just been rolling in

    4. I had never seen let alone held or touched a BJD even though I've been looking at them for a while, before I got my first own doll.

Because of that, I was quite worried whether I'd like BJDs or not - because you know, looking at owner photos online is a different thing than having them in your hands.

I purchased a company doll online but because they take so long to make, in the meantime I also bought a secondhand body and head seperately which arrived much quicker!
So the body arrived first and it was already magical! Seeing an SD body as your first BJD... he's so huge and smooth! I loved the smell of him and how the resin felt, as well as his weight! Of course the real magic happened when his head arrived and I could put him together!
Seeing a full doll, a beautiful head on such a nice, big body... it was love at first sight (and touch) for me!
He doesn't even have eyes yet but he is perfect already!
I'm sure it'll be similar with every new doll I'm getting but the first one is special forever <3

    5. The first doll I saw was at a convention and it was a msd fantasy type doll, and after I saw it I started looking into the hobby. See that first doll was defiantly magical and I probably wouldn't have found the hobby if it wasn't for it, so I'm very grateful for that chance encounter.

    6. I was sixteen when I started seeing pictures of ball-jointed dolls in the doll magazines I got, but I didn't get to see one in real life until Johnny (Angel of Dream Tao Hua Dao) came earlier this year. It definitely was a happy moment when I pulled that box open and saw his face for the first time. His faceup was perfect, his eyes were gray (a color I wasn't expecting), and his resin was smooth as butter. I gushed to my mother, "Oh, he's perfect! He's prettier than I ever could've imagined!" It was love at first sight for both of us; Mama likes Johnny almost as much as I do! She gets him nice things off Etsy, and every time I redress him I fall in love with him all over again. It's very satisfying to see my boy all dolled up (pun intended) in cute things that fit him like a glove. So it would be safe to say that Johnny and I have had more than one magic moment.

    7. I think the first time I saw one in person was at an anime convention, sitting on an artist's display table. I can't remember whether I was already looking at them online at that point or not, but they definitely caught my eye there. The first time I touched one was when I opened my own box, though. Magical moments for sure!

    8. like many others, my first time seeing a bjd in person was at an anime convention last year. i'd been pining over pictures since 2008, but that first viewing was very unexpected and all too fleeting. i was helping at my friend's artist table and a con-goer passed by with a doll in his arms. i sat up straight and tried to get a better look at her but he was already gone. later he passed by again and i managed to get out "your doll is beautiful!" before he left. he thanked me but didn't stay to linger, and i was busy helping out someone who wanted to buy fanmerch from my friend. overall, pretty anticlimatic and it left me feeling confused.

this year, i buckled down and ordered nicky's head and body after seven years of waffling. his body was second hand and arrived within the week of me ordering it. i was shocked by the sheer size of the box, but once i had the body in my hands it didn't feel as big to me anymore. having his body arrive first was kind of weird because physically it was LIKE having the whole doll but i still hadn't experienced that feeling of oh my god MAGIC without having a beautiful face to coo over.

finally, his head came this weekend and i was at a loss for words because it was everything i could have hoped for and more! finally i understood that magical first time moment :'D the feeling was amplified after i painted him the next day, but even blank he looked beautiful at every angle and i knew i'd made the right choice :>

    9. The first time I saw a bjd was my own. It was a magical moment as nothing I saw in photos could prepare me for the real thing. To be honest I think I had a bigger shock, though less magical, when I saw larger dolls in person -- I started with mini-sized dolls, but when I attended my first doll meet and saw the larger ones, there was a "woah" moment for sure!

    10. I saw them when my mother got interested in casting a resin doll. I first blew it off because she loves baby dolls, then I saw and SD adult and was smitten. it was years before I could get one myself but the bug had bitten.

    11. The first time I saw one IRL was my own, lol... I had never been to a convention before or anything. It was definitely an amazing experience xD I hadn't anticipated how heavy resin was.
