The really teeny tiny, are they worth it?

Jul 29, 2012

    1. I love tiny dolls! Honestly I wasn't sure about them at first, but after seeing a few pukipukis an an anime convention a few years back and then a ton of tinies at a doll meet soon after, I was in love. I've never had one of my own and I think my favorite size are the MSDs but I find the tinies fascinating and amazingly detailed for their size.

    2. I have a strict rule & never buy dolls over 20cms tall standing, 80% of my collection of 24 or so dolls are all under 10cms tall & they're my favourites. I absolutely love them, they're magical in every way :)

    3. I have some 1/6th's and a tiny. I love her but I think only one of her is enough. I love my MSD actually a lot more because I can carry him around and not worry of losing a tiny doll.

    4. I personally wouldn't. They're too small and you can't do much with them and they're expensive. Not to mention they all have really young sculpts and thats not really my thing :s

    5. Well first off I think that the tinies are so expensive because of the extra caution and tedious amounts of time dealing with such small parts... That said... I do think that they are worth giving a try because they are so adorable and, as everyone said a convenient size for travel, etc. However they can be hard to sew for, as well as paint if you do their face-ups. Pretty sure when I re-did my pukipuki's face-up I ended up using a sewing needle to paint some of her. I still didn't bond with her the way I wanted to but, I think that's because she was rather frustrating to me. She was so tightly strung when she came to me she didn't pose well at all and she would ping off her little hands and feet for me all the time so I'd spend hours just looking for her tiny parts that'd fall off and roll under my bed or work desk. (She never liked me much -.-' she'd only ping them off for me but was a complete angel when my hubby handled her or a stranger held her.) But that's the way it goes for me at least. I do think that they are worth a shot. I am looking at going up to a Pukifee size, or other yo-sd sized doll. I just think that 11cm isn't for me and that's ok but I did give it a go. Perhaps if someone is looking at whether or not it's worth it, they should contact a doll owner who owns tinies and go have a dolly play-date...

    6. Got my bluefairy pocket fairy today and I can only conclude with: YES, they are worth it! My heart nearly stopped when I unwrapped him, he was sooo cute. And his tiny face held more expression than I've seen on a lot of bigger dolls.

Sewing him tiny overalls etc will be a fun challenge :3

    7. I think that tiny dolls are absolutely the cutest things ever, but I don't think I could ever own one. The tiniest I've had is 26cm, and while I really like that size it is not my favorite. I love looking at other people's tiny dolls, I just couldn't get much enjoyment from one of my own.

    8. Personally, I'd rather not have a really tiny doll. They are incredibly adorable, but I think they're not for me. I'd rather have more options with bigger sizes when it comes to customization. Even if I could afford it, the cost does put me off since I tend to have thoughts like "Well I can save up only this much more for this bigger size". Plus, I don't think I've come across a tiny that I felt I must have.

    9. As for tiny's I have two PukiPuki's and one Lati Yellow. I love them because they don't take up much room and they look wonderful with the miniature soft sculptures I make. So business wise for me it is worth it!

I would also say it is worth it if you are into dioramas. Some people just love creating the miniature rooms!

    10. I'm seeing a lot of the dislike coming from assumptions that all tinies look babylike- however that isn't the case. My DHS Snow looks like a little fairy! Not babylike at all, really.

    11. I didn't want a really tiny tiny doll. Until I saw my DC Ada. I wouldn't get more that size, but I do love her!

    12. I don't plan to get any tiny dolls, unless it comes with a doll I'm already ordering. I just have more interest in larger dolls. But we all like different things! ^.^

    13. I think I'd feel bad if I bought a tiny doll which cost as much as an MSD, but I think that's just my personal choice- I guess if someone wanted a tiny and felt that it was worth the cost to them, that's what matters in my opinion ^_^

    14. I have two pukifee and one pukipuki, and they're great fun. I do prefer MSD as a size to sew for and such, but I love my little ones too much -they're so sweet!

    15. To be honest, I would love tinies if they had adult faces. I only collect 60+ because they have the most charming faces and well sculpted bodies, not to mention awesome detail in the clothes and wigs :p

    16. All but one of my dolls is smaller than 15cm (and the one that isn't is still smaller than a yoSD). Restringing isn't that bad at all if you have thin wire and some pliers, and you're much less likely to get injured than you are restringing a really large doll. It's true the clothing/sewing issue is difficult, though.
It's been helpful the few times I've taken pictures out in public. I get funny looks but taking pictures of small toys in a park etc. draws less attention than large dolls.
As for the price, if you judge the value of a doll based entirely on the volume of resin rather than the craftsmanship involved, they're probably not the best choice for you; but most dollhouse-and-smaller tinies are still on the inexpensive side relative to BJDs in general (and Dreamhigh Studio's dolls in particular are VERY well made and worth the money).

    17. I have a Volks Rei-Tenshi who is in the fetal position, so he is about 10cm total. Maybe 12cm with his Mohawk. About the size and shape of a very large fava bean. And I guess he is kinda useless. His wings move, and his arms move at the shoulder, but that's it. His legs & feet are fused together, his elbows are in the bent position, and his hands are in thumb-sucking fists; he simply doesn't wear clothes. This is actually saving me a fortune, so I have no argument with it.

I didn't even pay anything for him. I won him in a Dolpa raffle. :D So I cannot speak to the "are they worth the price?" question. I wasn't even looking to own a teeny-tiny; I am not too crazy about babies OR angels. I don't think I'd seek to buy one, either. Jimmy just sort of happened to me.

Re customization, I could still change his eyes, pierce his wings, or repaint him if I wanted, like any other doll... but I don't want to, because he has Dreaming eyes so it doesn't matter what eyeballs are in there, and I love the faceup that Volks gave him by default. He has this constant expression of Bitch Pleeze. I could buy different wigs for him, but he's so tiny that I don't think overwhelming his head with a full wig is the way to go (he came with an enormous blond bowl-cut)... so instead, I change his Mohawk to a new color of fake fur & call that a customization. And my expenditure for Jimmy's hairdrobe is $0, too-- none of my friends can resist giving me their scraps of fake fur "for Jimmy", and it's just attached with doublestick tape.

So I guess it is fortunate that I don't really want to do anything special with him, given his limitations. I love him just the way he is: He is this sleepy naked saucy WTF fetus with a mohawk who always looks like he's bored with my line of talk & can see right through me. There is something about the size of dolls vis-a-vis their attitude... Attitude honestly seems to become focused & intensified, the smaller a doll gets. The second-badassest doll in my collection is Nava the Yo-SD. xD

(However, the Pro side = Very easy to travel with! Jimmy has a huge fanclub in the New York area. People who don't remember me remember him.)

    18. I was always confused when looking at the size of ordinary dolls, they seem huge to me, because I'm used to small dolls, about 20-30 centimeters. Now I understand that it is easier to sew for them and there are more wigs. But, unfortunately, clothes that suits small dolls look like cllothes for children, but not all small dolls are children.
I prefer small dolls, they are more compact and not need many space.

    19. I love tinies but only in pictures ... in others!!
For me it is too small, cute yes, but difficult to clothe and shoes on! (not to mention the price actually ... especially if I do nothing with it)
I love BJD at least 25cm, I think this is my limit (but do not they say "never say never?"...)

    20. A few months ago I'd have said so not worth it - but that all changed when I got a free tiny in an event! Absolutely adore the little fella, and well, I plan on eventually buying a couple more (admittedly as faeries and small child representations to my bigger dolls but still!)
