1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

The stress of shelling

Nov 14, 2022

    1. I commissioned sculptors and, later, learned blender & 3D printing. Yep. I went that far.

    2. Ah i thought i was in the minority with this approach! I do this as well, i let the doll tell me who they are rather than trying to find a doll to match my characters. Heck ive ended up with a whole new batch of OCs because of this! that being said i AM going to be attempting to shell an RP character of mine soon...i only have one other OC doll that ive bought and sold numerous times (mostly because of finances) so im hoping this one sticks around.

    3. Yes, I love "cooperating" with the doll sculpt to create the OC together!

For me, the process kinda happens both before and after I get the doll. First the doll has to "give" me a character through its store/promo/owner photos. I don't know how to describe this, but it's like how some characters just emerge in your mind spontaneously. If I look at a doll's photos and a character emerges like this, it means the doll is more than just a pretty sculpt -- now it starts having a character that is meaningful to me. I've learned to use this as a guide to decide what dolls I want to bring home.

Then after the doll comes home, we develop the "details" - what hair/eyes/clothes looks good, what kind of personality is being suggested. Again, don't know how to describe, but it's like cooperating with the sculpt and giving it "suggestions" of appearance to see what looks good with it. I find this more fun and relaxing, instead of trying to force them to fit into a preconceived idea (which is what my non-resin OCs are - very well established characters already).

I just thought of an idea... maybe I'll get my doll characters to cosplay my non-resin OCs. I think that method will work waaaaay better than trying to shell the non-resin OC directly into a doll.

    4. I've got two kinds of dolls-dolls that represent OCs and dolls that I just liked. The latter tend not to tell me anything until I actually have them in hand. Sometimes it takes a while. The former I've mostly been working on for years. I never expect to get an OC right the first time.

I should say there's no method. It's all intuitive for me.
