Too many? (Dolls in drag, / relationships, etc)

Aug 16, 2008

    1. This should be a t-shirt.

I don't have anything intelligent to add. I just wanted to to let you know how amazingly happy it made me to read your comment! Thank you! <3
      I made my day.

    2. lots of really good comments just on the first page not sure what else there is to add. No time to read so many pages..lol.

What may seem so last year or overdone to me may not be the same to someone else and vice versa. For example in the real world I am sooo tired of the 80s look(bad neon 80s)..lol I lived in the 80s and it keeps coming back. Fads come and go.

With my dolls however they all have their own individual styles which will remain the same since that is what is unique or makes them who they are. I sketched characters over 15yrs ago before I new about BJDs they all already had their own styles picked out for them so that is shown in their doll form. I have girl-girl, boy-boy, girl-boy relationships goth, punk, steampunk, rockabilly, western, etc you name it I probably have a doll with that style..its a whole rainbow of different styles for my gang. I don't follow what everone else is doing, I just do my own thing. With so many people in the hobby there is bound to be dolls with the same looks, styles and orientations...so I guess I don't see how anything can be too much afterall that is how the real world is, its just natural to assume the doll world would be the same :)

    3. Yikes. I remember that. It's also sad to me to see fads coming back mislabeled as 70's styles when they were from the late 60's. Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt and wore it to a nubbin. ;)

I think a few years ago (like, when this thread was originally started, even) there just weren't as many options for buying doll clothing. When I started with them in 2006 that was my biggest frustration - no clothes. So if a company started doing, say, cupcake-girl lolita-esque outfits, that's what a vast number of doll owners bought. Ditto the platform boot thing (gawd, I remember my favorite local band in the 70s wearing those. Why....).

I'm just delighted that now we have so many excellent choices. :)

    4. glad someone understands..and so true I've seen soo many things labeled the wrong era or style..although on a side note I happen to like platform boots, that and wedge heels..lol.

I haven't been in the hobby long but your right if people don't sew or there isn't anyone selling anything but a particular style it is hard to not have your doll dress like others, which is why I'm glad I can sew.

    5. I was thinking this myself, but just couldn't find the words to put it down. I couldn't agree with you more, and I'm a straight female. Well said.

    6. I don't really mind it until I see a bunch of people having a whole collection of "it" ("it" could be, lolitas, punks, gay guys, mermaids. anything, really)

so basically, If I see 5 persons having each a lolita doll, I'm like "ok. sure, why not. lolitas are cute.". but when I see 5 people who each have a bunch of dolls who are pretty much all lolita... I find it very boring... and sometimes a bit annoying (depending on the person of course. but usually, someone who have a whole collection of something tend to be a bit obssessed with that thing. so it would be very likely that those lolita dolls collectors would go "OMG THIS IS KAWAIIIIII" all over the place)

obviously, everyone can do whatever the hell they want. their money, their time, their taste. but that also mean I have the right to go " =__________=;; " and hit the back button.

    7. I feel like I'm really in the minority here. I mean, I don't have a problem with people dressing their dolls however they want, and I don't think anyone has the right to tell anyone else how to dress/face-up/take care of their dolls.

But once, just once, I'd like to be able to see a doll in a pretty dress and be at least reasonably sure that it's supposed to be a girl so I don't feel embarrassed when I say "Oh, she's so pretty!" and the doll's owner gives me the hairy eyeball and says "Excuse me, he's a guy." :doh

      *deep breath*

There. I said it. I feel better now. :)

    8. Emby Quinn - I agree with you. I have NO problem with anybody doing what they want with their dolls. I have major issues with people telling me what to do with mine. BUT. Be expected for people to assume things. If you put a boy in a dress, heels, makeup, long hair....expect people to assume it's female. That's like sticking cat ears on a doll and getting upset that somebody assumed she's a neko and not a human with fake cat ears. I do my best to see dolls as the owner meant for them to be seen, but there are some things you just. can't. tell. Like a boy in a frilly dress and girly makeup. Without stripping the doll or being told, I have NO way of knowing it is a boy, especially with all the modded M-to-F and F-to-M dolls and heads meant for one gender on the opposite body out there.

Back to the OP....there are some things where I'm like "ohh...another one. -_- ' but I'm not going to comment to the owner, because it's not my business. Even at first glance, while you might categorize a group together, the character is often much deeper or different from the boring norm. Take Maddy, my RS Lu...yes...she's "ANOTHER vampire" -siiiiigh boring.- But she's NOT a typical vamp, if you go deeper. she's a human with capped teeth, no special abilities, giggly and playful, wouldn't harm a fly. she's a hairdresser and dating a typical gamer guy. She's kind of a dork. She loves hippos. All of that is stuff you wouldn't know by looking at this vamp sculpt in WS with black hair. Is she totally original and amazingly different from any other character ever created? no. but I would certainly not group her in with the "real" vampires and supernatural OR hardcore goth that a lot of ppl would at first look.

    9. @Cloaked Scheme As someone who's met Maddy I know she's that awesome. I have to agree with you, I mean you have to kind of expect someone to do the "What do you mean that's a boy?" especially if you have a doll like my boy Faolin who loves being all feminine.

You have to be able to understand that are a lot of androgynous dolls out there. I mean while some people might see the cross dressing doll or the gay doll as over done, I'm rather cool with it. My one doll is, but I originally planned on him being straight. I really don't think we should judge people on what they decide their dolls to be gay or straight, or what fashions they like. Besides I mean you really shouldn't jump on judging anyone or their dolls before you know about them. They might have a really good reason for what they have their dolls doing. After all, you wouldn't judge a person right off like that, saying "oh he's gay because its a fad", Would you?

    10. your not in the minority..I totally agree. And well it happens...I had the opposite my girl was in pants, a flight jacket and flight cap and someone was like he's so cute I like the steampunk look...I just laughed and said thanks..as some sculpts are so androgynous and be used for boys or girls it can be an honest mistake.

    11. You're not - there are lots of folks here in the last 26 pages who are big into heteronormativity.

So go make one! Go make a girly-girl female in a pretty dress! Carpe diem! Just don't sit there and expect others to make their toys into something that you want to look at.

    12. I find the whole "It's been done to death" attitude quite interesting. It reminds me of the Portlandia sketch where a hipster says, "That is so over," to every trend he sees, and feels the need to throw out anything he owns that might be too mainstream to be cool anymore.

If something is only worthwhile because it's different, because no one else has thought of it yet, etc., if being at the bleeding edge of every fad somehow validates you, I feel very sorry for you (plural, general you here). And seeing homosexual relationships as the latest manifestation of bleeding edge taste (that is now so over, and done to death) is really quite offensive.

The truth is that there are no new ideas. Everything is recycled over and over. And an idea or style becoming popular in no way invalidates its worth.

    13. Right on! and so true

    14. I admit that I don't get this at all. If someone is really into something, why would it be odd or annoying that their dolls reflect that? Having multiple dolls of one things doesn't equate obsessiveness, and even if someone is a bit obsessive about an interest, they aren't necessarily annoying about it. You are making some assumptions. I have multiple dolls who will wear lolita-y things and I will have multiple steampunk dolls in the future too, because I like lolita and steampunk *shrugs*. I know people who tend to stick to a particular theme with their dolls, and I've yet to find them annoying. Annoying collectors exist, but I think it has less to do with the style of dolls they own and more to do with their personalities.

Sure, if it's something you don't like, by all means. But I don't get the attitude towards other collectors.

    15. i cant say I've seen what I call a lot of traditional punk clothes, most of it is J-Rock and the rock fashions in Japan.

But when it comes to old time, 70's/80's punk rock in London... I have to say I really haven't seen much of it. Sorry, I just wanted to throw that in there.

I really think its taste. For instance, I'm not a fan of twilight. and aorund me, twilight is EVERYWHERE. and every time I see something else Twilight related, I go "good gracious its ENOUGH!"

      so when I see a doll twilight related, I go " ._."

too much homosexual relationships? mm. Thats a touchy subject I'd rather not touch.

Too much drag? ...I still feel like I'm the only one that hasn't really seen a doll in drag other than one meet that I went to. Cross dressing? well yes. In full out drag? No. And in fact, I'd really love to see one. I'd love to see the faceup, flashy clothes. I think it'd be fun.

but really I DO love seeing what people do with their dolls. Wether its been done before or not, at the end of the day, each doll is unique. I wish I had time to go through all the galleries because I totally can't get enough of dolls.

      that's just my opinion though ^^;

    16. I think that in some situations, this is true. For example, my two friends have all their dolls in gay relationships, all boys I might add. This isn't a problem, some of my dolls I plan on getting are in gay relationships. However, anytime they talk, play, meet up, or do anything with their dolls, they're stripping and getting hot and heavy. Anytime, anywhere, and in any situation. It's a bit too much, to the point that their dolls have little to no personality other than this (to say nicely) rabbit like action. I think that is when the line should be drawn. If your dolls are gay, okay, if they're gay for no reason and all they do it...do it. I think that's crosing the line. I could be wrong, but after hours litstening/watching/and having to deal with this after any mention of dolls come up, it's just my opinion.

    17. To start off with I don't think that things like sexuality, gender, or race can be "overdone".
As for clothing and such, most people are limited by what is sold by companies or sellers on etsy. I for one can't sew and it can be hard to find outfits outside of the more popular styles such as lolita, punk, visual kei, etc. If someone has a gaggle of dolls dressed in lolita how is that annoying? Or a horde of elves and vampires? I don't understand how there can be too much of something or how that could offend someone's tastes.
People will do whatever they want with their dolls. You can have an attitude about it if you want but I think that's a waste of energy.

    18. KEYWORDS: "depending on the person" = I do believe there are people who are reasonnable.
"usually" & "very likely" = often but not always.

if you see someone with dolls or OCs that are all lolita & visual key and/or with names like "akira" and "naoko", I can bet you that on their profile it will say that this person loves japan. and then there is a pretty big chance that, most often on their personnal blog, it will be written everywhere what a wonderful place japan is, how sexy japanese people are and that he/she wants to visit japan someday.

now did I say it was a horrible thing? no, just that it bores me.

attitude? obviously, if I stare at my computer screen with a =___=;;; face they are definitely going to be offended and sad!

what makes you think the person didn't already do it?
personnaly, even if I have a doll of a certain style/culture or whatever, I would still like to see other people with the same kind because I am sure they would do a better job than me & that it would therefore be very enjoyable to see.

    19. I don't CARE whether or not that person has already gone and done it themselves-- I wanted them to just stop bitching about it. That person may have a whole collection of girl dolls in frilly dresses, and still feel it's OK to complain that there aren't enough girl dolls in frilly dresses to look at, and still think it's OK to complain when other people put their frilly dresses on boy dolls instead. It's called being part of the problem. Nobody owes it to you to play with their dolls in a way you like. If you don't see what you like, go make it. If you see something you don't like, STFU and cope with it. If you take responsibility for seeking & finding what you want to see (i.e. by searching for pics of them, or by making it yourself), then you won't be so prone to complain about the way everyone else is showing only things you don't want to see.

    20. I'd thought they weren't complaining about the boys-in-dresses thing so much as complaining about having said "Oh, what a pretty girl!" and having the owner of the boy-in-a-dress be unpleasant in response.

I agree that people shouldn't care how anyone else plays with their dolls, but I think that comment had more to do with manners/accepting a compliment than play-style.
