Too many? (Dolls in drag, / relationships, etc)

Aug 16, 2008

    1. That...would have to be an exceptionally horrible movie for me to want to do that. The only things that pops into my mind straight away is twilight, but many of the photostories are very similar. At least twilight has decent cinematography I guess.

    2. I don't think there's too many of these kinds of dolls, simply that people like the ideas so we see a lot of them. To me there's little difference between this and the sculpts of the dolls themselves- there's a lot of MNF Chloes around, but I don't think there's too many of them. It's just that people like them, so they show up a lot.

    3. Thank you very much

    4. I agree that those kinds of things are done to death. But people can do whatever they like with their dolls, I just have no interest in them.

    5. I guess they've been 'done to death', but I don't particularly care. So long as it makes the owner happy, it doesn't matter to me. Even if they're doing it just because it's a 'trend', it's their doll and they can do what they want.

    6. Well, for me, it's the same with dolls as it's with fan fictions: There's stuff I simply either don't care for anymore or don't get. I just don't get why some people insist on putting their boy-dolls into cute, frilly dresses. I'm the kind of person who, if she wanted to put a doll in a cute, frilly dress, would buy a girl doll. Guys in frilly dresses usually make me go "Aw, poor guy, doesn't he feel kinda - odd wearing that?" But that's just me. It's your dolls, you do with them whatever you want - no one's forcing me to look at pics of dolls or doll-themes I don't like.

      One thing about this, though:

I so agree with that! Cos, let's be honest, though we all may enjoy making up stories or writing stories, not everyone's got the talent to write GOOD stories. Just like not everyone got the talent to sew nice doll-clothes or do great face-ups or take fantastic pictures. It's largely a matter of practice but even a lot of practice will only get you so far. Don't believe there's a thing like "badly-written fan stories"? I dare you to go to fanfiction.net, choose whatever fandom you want and start browsing the stories. (But, of course, this is a completely different topic. Sorry. Couldn't resist since I'm writing (fan) fiction myself and before anyone here tells me to, yes, I KNOW I can write a decent story.)

    7. Not to mention in a movie you might get bad writing and acting but at least you have pretty/cool things to look at (action scenes, cool cgi stuff, etc...) with bad photostories it's often a triple threat: badly written, badly photographed, and the dolls are badly styled (dirty, bad faceups, ratty wigs, ill-fitting, poorly made clothes, etc...)

    8. Nope-- still not convinced. Most movies & TV I see are still no better than photostories. Bad production values abound; bad wigs/makeup/costumes/CGI everywhere. Even the ones with good production values can't make up for the trite characters, gratuitous T&A, worn-out plots, hackneyed dialogue, buzzwords, pop culture references that go out of style next week, loose ends, Jeezus, and you're PAYING for it. At least the photostories are free! If you're gonna indulge in junkfood for the mind, free is always better.

    9. That and honestly, it's really easy with a photostory to just.....block everything else out. I have viewed many photostories *just* for pictures, and if I find a couple I like, the story doesn't matter to me at all.

It is very hard to do that with movies... sure you can admire cool effects, settings, costumes....but with everything in motion, your mind is more likely to be distracted by the bad acting, silly dialogue, or other some such... For example, the only reason I watched the movie Splice was because I was inspired by Dren's design to make a character that I one day want to make into a doll. I only watched the film to get good views on her body at different angles, see how she moved, behaved...and then I got distracted by the tragic trainwreck of a plot, the holes, the... honestly poor developed characters...

Had it been a photostory....it's just a matter of skipping to images you like and gazing at them.

    10. You're watching the wrong kind of movie/TV-show, then. Try "Sherlock". Or "Being Human" (the British original - not the U.S. remake). - I do think that bad photostories are excusable as long as they are the "well, they didn't know any better, they're probably still learning" kind or "ok, this is pretty standard/cliché but at least, you can see they still put a lot of work into it". What I will NOT excuse, however, is sloppinesss. In my book, sloppiness = "they're not even trying" or "they only posted this for the sake of posting SOMETHING, no matter whether it's good, bad or ugly". If you wanna call yourself an artist or want others to take your works even semi-seriously, the least thing you owe to yourself and your art is to not be sloppy about it. But try to get it done as well as you can. Cos if you don't, then what's the point?

(Edit: If you want an example of good storytelling in a U.S. TV-show, go for "Babylon 5". The CGI probably wasn't all that great but you can easily forget about it due to the fascinating characters, the great character-development throughout the series and the story-arc that starts in episode 1 of season 1 and goes on till the final episode of season 4 - you might want to ignore season 5, though.)

    11. Part of me wants to go 'hell yes I'm so fed up of seeing <insert doll trend here>'

the other part of me wants to stand up for people doing whatever the hell they want
who cares if a lot of other people are doing the same thing? If it's what you want to do, just go ahead and do it, I'll admit my doll is a punk-y, kinda slutty, narcissistic douchebag who everyone can't help liking, but they don't know why - the amount of similarly dressed/characterized dolls is insane and that's just the way it goes, but it's no different to how we follow trends as humans
if every doll was hetero, wearing a generic pair of jeans and a top, noone would say that was a trend or 'done to death' because it doesn't stand out, it's part of our society's norms and it's only because more punk-ish (for example) clothing, among other things aren't part of our society's trends that they appear to stand out

also... this isn't really a debate, it's more a series of opinions...

    12. I must have been lucky since I've yet to see a movie as irredeemably bad as a lot of the photostories posted. (well there was one back in the day with a girl being..."assaulted" by a tree, but at that point I shut it off) But the easy solution is to hit that magical back button asap and go on with your life, or better yet only look at photos in the gallery+ section :D

    13. Basically, yes! But we seem to require another one of these threads, or exhume one of the old ones, every so often ("Oh help help, I'm being repressed, there's too many gay dolls and goths around, my doll is the only heterosexual preppie in the world"). And every time, all I can reiterate is that it doesn't matter whether something has been done, because everything has been done-- what matters is whether it's been done by YOU. I say let other people make their dolls up as they see fit, and everybody tend to their own.

Uhh, no, yawn. Been there, done those. I just go elsewhere for my entertainments because I know what I like. Everybody's crap-thresholds are in different places. I'd take a fun splattery cult-film that knows it's ludicrous-- any day-- over a film that's utter shite but thinks it's good & is advertised to the masses as good.

Personally speaking, if I'm going to be viewing crap, I want it to be free, & I want a Back button. And, if possible, it should also be mitigated by a little beefcake.

I do NOT think that everybody on a doll forum has to be an accomplished storyteller or professional photographer or have museum-quality dolls. If they're just posting in situ snapshots of their doll for no reason, and have strung together a little halfassed bit of dialogue to make it more entertaining-- so what? It's not the Iowa Writers' Workshop up in here, it's a place to share your dolls. If someone's posting is sheer agony to look at, there's the Back button. But if it's even half-good, I take that as a bonus.

    14. I hope it wasn't Evil Dead because that sh*t is hilarious!

    15. I don't remember, it was a looong time ago ^_^'

    16. There is such a difference between the standard of 'well-written' (or well-done) vs a hackneyed theme (these abound, in the dollie world, in films, literature, manga, anime, comics, whatEVER). I've seen cliched ideas brought to vivid life again by wonderful treatment (writing, etc) AND I've seen very original & interesting ideas/storylines ruined by amateurish execution.
Everybody has the right to create what they want. I do NOT have to like it. And believe me there are definitely things I'm personally sick of (ZOMBIES - I mean, WHY!!!/???) But there is a photostory on this board featuring a zombie that I find very cool because it is done well & has an original twist.

    17. Personally, I truly don't care what anyone does with their dolls. No exceptions. You like it? Do it. Create it. Paint it. Make it. Take pictures of it. Be proud of it!

One thing I'll probably never understand, is why so many people want to spend their lives feeling RIGHTEOUSLY OFFENDED over anything and everything imaginable. To me, the outcry of "I hate it, it offends me, it's wrong, it's weird, it's gross, blah blah blah" is far more distressing (and dare I say, irritating) than anything that's done to the actual dolls themselves. When it comes right down to it, you really can't win. You just can't. No matter what it is, somebody, somewhere, will find something to get pissy about. I suppose I could say something flippant here, like "It's just human nature" or "Such is life", but I honestly think that a lot of people (in general) just need to chill out. Seriously, calm down. Seeing a doll/photostory/picture you don't like isn't going to trigger the apocalypse.

I will fully admit that I have a gay couple in my little collection. I'm not ashamed of it, and I honestly don't care if anyone finds it 'overdone', or even if they're offended by it. They're my characters and my dolls. I can (and certainly will) do whatever I wish with them. End of story.

    18. I don't 'follow trends' to do with dolls, I just tend to make my dolls reflect my tastes. My dolls dress as they do, because well... I like it, and I dress that way too. :P My dolls are queer because I am, and my dolls are androgynous because I am too. :P Though to be fair, most sculpts are androgynous looking.

    19. Well, basically, my opinion on "dollie trends" is this (just to sum it up):

Do with your doll whatever you want, I don't care as long as you don't force it down my throat. As long as I don't HAVE to look at it or like it or comment on it - fine. Whatever. I don't care how good, bad or ugly a photostory is as long as I don't HAVE to read it.

Personally, I don't like photostories and I really don't see the appeal in doing photostories when I can spend the same time WRITING a story - but then, I never really was into comics, either, and I guess photostories and comics are kinda the same category, yes? (And I'm also more of a writer and less of a photographer/visual artist kind of person - I simply don't like taking pics of my dolls that require me to do more than place them somewhere more or less appealing and snap a few shots.)

If you MAKE me comment on something I don't like, however, the best you can expect from me will be a polite "Well - not my thing, really". And if you keep bugging me for more details, I'll probably get less polite and tell you exactly what I think. (In which case, you better not complain cos, well, you asked for it ...)

    20. About clothing I can say that luckily now there are many different stiles available because before it really was difficult for me to even find something different from punk/emo or leather...
My dolls wear all different clothes that match better their personality, it's not something I chose to be original, at least my dolls are ordinary humans, but it's more like I found out they have different taste in clothes, to the extent they rarely can share something even if they are the same size XD
      I also have a girl who wear boys clothing, but she is a Takarazuka (all girls japanese theater) actress who likes to be too much in character even in real life ^^;

I think yaoi it's pretty common mostly because a lot of us are girls that come from anime/manga, if you add that BJDs have often androginous features the connection between crossdressing and/or homosexual pairings and this hobby it's easy!
I like yaoi too, but there was a time I was annoyed by it expecially in the bjd community, so I created a non-pairing with my two male SD dolls: it was pretty amusing because one was hitting on the other that obviously wasn't interested in that XD
Yeah, I like to troll my dolls... but be assured, they have both found a decent partner now (another boy and a girl), so in the end I joined the yaoi trend too U__U
