Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Too many? (Dolls in drag, / relationships, etc)

Aug 16, 2008

    1. How about leather stockings instead?

    2. I was thinking kilts actually. That doesn't count as boys in skirts. There are definitely a LOT of dolls wearing pants out there, gay or straight, punk or otherwise.

Okay, I'm going to stop now. I promise. ^^

    3. Ingiebee- Nooo...because then I'd feel bad about dressing my boy in all of those...leather...stockings I just bought...!

I don't know why I didn't bring Ghandi up earlier, but I think anyone who thinks "blank blank blank is overdone and stupid and I WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT!" (which is perfectly understandable) would do well to follow his advice :) Be the change you wish to see in the world, yes? Even if it's the BJD world. Maybe if you branch out with something innovative and new, others might do the same. There's no harm in trying; and it's better than making hurtful comments (however unintentional they may be) about other peoples' dolls ;)

    4. I have to say, I understand where you guys are coming from, but I do believe that people have a right to like and dislike what suits their tastes and preferences. I honestly don't believe anyone is trying to intentionally attack anyone by feeling that something is overdone. I would never flat out tell someone that they can't wrap their doll in tin foil and feathers, it's their doll. If they look at my doll and think "oh god, not another doll in t-shirts and cargo pants" it's their opinion and they have every right to think that.

If they tell me that to my face in a rude way then I can roll my eyes at them, but if it's their opinion then I have no say in what they think. I do dress my dolls to my taste, I wouldn't do it any other way and wouldn't expect anyone else to do otherwise as well. I honestly think the people that are voicing their opinions about what styles and trends aren't their thing are not trying to force people to fit into their mold or stop what they're doing.

    5. And that's alright :) Because this is the debate thread, so there will be different views on everything. Mainly in the earlier pages there seemed (to me) to be a lot of "do something different! 8(" attitude, so it kind of got to me. But yes, I understand that no one is attacking anyone here. n__n So I apologize if I came off as rude.

    6. No problem~ I just like to clarify and make sure since I don't like to come off as rude myself. Debate threads tend to get pretty heated sometimes, but I guess that's just natural. Thanks though. :chocoberry

    7. I was just thinking. All these "done to death" and "too many" problems comes from a community watching each other. Chopsticks is right when she quoted that if you want to see a change, you should be the change.

I know some people are annoyed that everyone and their mother has an El, but I still got one anyway. Why? Because to me, I don't have an El, and I like how he looks. He's the El I look at everyday. Not everyone else's.

I also have three gay couples. I know alot of guy dolls in the bjd scene are gay but I don't really look at them either. I look at mine. I still want a loli girl doll one day. Too many of that too? Oh well they're not exactly on my lap are they?

If people want something, they should get it on their own. Old or new, stop seeking it in other people's dolls. You may be seeing too many punks around. You may be seeing too little gore mods on MSDs. If you get annoyed by people making the same kind of dolls around then stop looking and produce something that you'd like to see.

    8. Oh, I don't mean it's a bad thing. If I had an El, he'd probably wear dresses and long wigs too. "Done to death" doesn't mean it's done too much. Just a lot. And I DID say that I identified, if you had read the rest of my post, you'd had known. We're talking about stereotypes and whatnot in here, so I mentioned them. Emo gay vampires have been done to death, and I have one. Never did I say they SHOULDN'T make their characters that way. We all have the right to do whatever we want with our brain children. <3

    9. i LOL'd so hard! i totally agree. i'm guilty of the homosexual crossdressing gay boys as well, to be honest, i don't care.

    10. lmao XD.well....yaoi is an addiction. XD don't hate on it....i dont ahev any but still.lmao

    11. "Don't you hate pants??"
(I just keep hearing Homer Simpson in my head, heckling Krusty's edgy new standup routine, because he keeps hoping Krusty will exhort the audience to burn their pants... It would take a Homer mind to grasp some of the reasoning in this thread, too....)

Yeah. When you've seen one hetero-sexual couple, you've seen them all. When you've seen one Puki Puki, you've seen them all. When you've seen one Dollzone, you've seen them all. When you've seen one beautywhite elf, you've seen them all. When you've seen one pair of kitty-ears or cat-pupil eyes, you've seen them all. When you see one lolita dress, you've seen them all. And by the way, don't you hate pants?

    12. I apologize ^__^; I suppose I misunderstood your post; I was incredibly confused.
I guess it also has something to do with different people taking the phrase "done to death" to mean different things. I always use it as "yes, it's been done a million times, it's finished. Let's move on!", but another use could be that it is seen a lot.
Anyway, I do agree that - in the end - every owner should do what they want with their doll so that they get as much enjoyment out of the hobby as they can.

    13. No offense, but does it really matter whether something has been "done to death"?
These are our beloved dolls and we do what we like with them. :D Cheers...

    14. In my opinion, BJD collecting is still technically a "niche" hobby. The majority of people you meet on the street aren't BJD collectors. So when like-minded people come together, they usually have more than one interest in common. I don't find it at all unusual that there are multiple people who like yaoi, lolita, or punk in this community. In fact, I sometimes feel a little out of place in the BJD world because I'm not really into yaoi or gothic styles. There's also the fact that in a forum community, where we tend to share pictures, some people may imitate or be inspired by a style they like on someone else's doll. And of course doll companies tend to sell certain styles of clothing that are popular, which only feeds into the community obsession. It's not wrong, it's not copying, it's just trends and shared interests.

    15. Personally, I've seen this in the form of 'It's Asian, therefore it is gay 8D." But yes, it is quite a trend these days, and yes it annoys me. I (will) have a goth-and-black-leather doll, but it's her character, not just what seems cool at the time. She's not going to suddenly become say, a catgirl, because that's what fandom happens to think is cool at the moment.

    16. At the risk of stating the obvious causing trouble, this does not seem like a debate to me. Rather, it seems like an opportunity to complain about, or defend, dollieh cliches. We all respond to something; sometimes we all like something together for awhile, and then we are up to our armpits in cat ears. Cliches happen.

Since I can't imagine anyone has the power to, say, ban a cliche they don't like, I'm not sure what the purpose of this discussion is. "Yes, there are too many gay elves in drag with kitty ears." "No, there aren't; we need more."

To me this is not a debatable point; it's an expression of opinion pure and simple.

Personally, I think we need menswear. Lots and lots of menswear.

And glasses. Lots and lots of SD-size glasses.

I'd like to see nerdy men in suits done to death. ^ ^

I'm quite receptive to being enlightened as to how this is a debate, anyway.

    17. You haven't read through many of the threads in this sub-forum, have you? They're all more or less like this. None of them are, strictly speaking, debates.

    18. Generally, I fear this subforum, yes. :XD:

But for some reason, this just struck a nerve.

Maybe because I really would love it if my peculiar little nerdboy fetish hit it big and enabled me to find dolly-sized bespoke suits at the drop of a well-blocked hat.

Has anyone considered that as the bright side to having "too many...?"

    19. doll owners fall into trends because typically, people who have the same hobbies have similar interests. People who like abjds usually like anime, lolita, and gothic, androginous, and gay themes are prevalent in these circles. Just like blonde girls with fake tans feel compelled to wear aeropostle and drink jamba juice. People often fall into circles of interest, no matter where you look. Great minds think alike i guess.

    20. I look at face ups- and custom clothes. Not what "trend" the doll would fall into although I do have a weakness for goggles (which are pretty common...but I cant seem to find were to buy some :/)

Plus the only reason there are alot of androgynous boys on here is because there are a lot of androgynous moulds!

I dont own a doll but I have my two characters I want to make, I have had these characters for years, I just never thought about pulling them out my sketch book and into the real world. The male character Jessie (Yes female spelling, his mother wanted a girl) is a girly boy but that was needed for the storyline he was in (no, he does not dress in drag, he is not an emo (he does have goggles though) and is not gay...just feminine).

So the point I'm getting at is some dolls are created to bring their already existing characters to life. So they really dont care if people think that their doll fits into some stereotype. To them it is their presious character that they have spent time and patience developing!

Please excuse my awfull spelling- safari's spellcheck was flailing...and I suck at spelling!
