Too many joints?

May 9, 2014

    1. I open a lot of tabs when I visit DOA. I got to this one and read this comment...thought, "wait...what the hell topic is this?", read the quote, and proceeded to laugh my ass off. Thank you for that!:XD:

The first response to this thread that was deleted had a photo of a lay figure, not a BJD, which is a huge difference. The jointing on that thing is amazing, but it is meant to be an artistic reference, so aesthetics don't really matter. A BJD on the other hand needs to strive to strike a balance between functionality and posing ability, in my opinion. When I first got into the hobby, I couldn't care less about posing ability, I wanted pretty. But having experience with trying to pose some of the more "ornamental" bodies, I realized very quickly that pretty and useless just isn't good enough. Any time I have a body choice in which I can opt for an extra joint that sacrifices some prettiness, I choose it without question.

I'll admit, I'm kind of turned off by jointed hands because they look too skeletal for me. I think I would have to play with a pair to really decide if I like them or not. The idea of posing the fingers however I like is really appealing.

I just took a look at the Dollshe 32S/35S bodies, and I have to agree with DarkStar, those are taking it a little too far. I feel like I'm looking at one of those muscle anatomy diagrams in the doctor's office. Nice dong though!

    2. I like the 1/3 size seamless dolls from ArteTokio and Tokyo doll. They have no visible joints but are still posable. They are expensive though. I might have to save up for one as they really look good in pictures.

    3. While a large number of joints can be intimidating, I love the options you get with possibility--especially with jointed hands. I agree, DC's hands for girls are lovely--although I wouldn't mind a single joint in each finger. I'd like to see more options with the companies and jointed hands, especially for companies like Iplehouse.

    4. Joints. All the joints. More joints! I have a huge, extra-jointed DC guy on the way because I love it's extra neck, wrist and ankle joints. Not even mentioning the oddly jointed fingers and toes. I like the look more them far more than most other jointed hands I've seen- but like others have said, I'd have to play with a pair to really get an opinion. My main thing is a mixture between posability and aestetics for all joints...

    5. As long as the joints are well engineered, I love having more mobility in my dolls. If the joint is poorly engineered, it just frustrates me. For example, I loveeee SOOM bodies, especially the three jointed ones, but my Resinsoul Lian's body frustrates me to tears. Her hip just always pops out of its socket when I'm trying to pose her and sueding and restringing didn't help a diddy.

I also love my jointed hands - they make posing a dream - but I much prefer my SOOM hands to my DikaDoll hands because, again, the SOOM ones pose better and look nicer while doing it.

As far as I'm concerned, the point at which jointing becomes excessive is when you're sacrificing good engineering for mobility. What good is it having a million joints that can pose any way, if they then subsequently cannot hold the poses?

    6. I love the jointed hands because I can pose each finger the way o want to... now for some other joints... I don't like the upper thigh, or the hip, or the ugly double joints... but that is my opinion

    7. I looked at the DollShe page referenced, and I don't see what is "smooth" about those joints. They look like insect bodies, and the musculature is sharp and unnatural everywhere else. I would have to dress that doll so only the hands, feet, and head were exposed because, to me, that sacrifices aesthetics for posing.

I don't care for three-joint torsos because even after restringing and hot-glue sueding, my one doll with three joints will proceed to lean or snap into freakish contortions when I move him. It also breaks up the nice line from ribs to hips, and I don't like that.

I have a Doll Chateau Christina with all the extra joints, and she creeped the hell out of me when I first saw her. After a week of making retching noises when I kept going back to the page to look at her body, I preordered her, and she's easily my favorite female doll. All the extra joints make her pose so naturally, and she wears scarves whenever that extra neck joint gives me the heebie-jeebies.

    8. I don't like jointed hands (except the dollchateau ones) not necessarily because of the joints, just cuz they look difficult to pose. I love tinies though, not all of them, but my Realpuki Soso has the most joints out of my collection so far, and I still think he looks fine xD

    9. The toes are the only ones that bother me a little. Not enough to stop me from liking the dolls, because I love Doll Chateau, but I think I'd prefer it if each toe didn't have a joint. Since fingers have more movement than toes, it makes more sense to have joints there. I do like the necks that seem to creep a lot of people out, though. I think they look ethereal and graceful. (And maybe a little creepy in some photos, but in a good way.)

    10. I'd love to have a pair of hands that just had joints between the proximal and middle phalanx. I think you could get a lot of posibility out of that, without having a million little joints. (Fists, cupped, one finger crooked, etc) I've yet to see any like that, though. :/

    11. Personally, the alien, insectial look of the DC dolls with all the extra joints is exactly what I love about the company, so yes, I really like extra joints. And I love jointed hands as long as they keep a long, elegant shape. I can't stand square shaped hands, probably because mine look like that!

    12. I loooove joints! It's what makes this hobby so awesome for me!
My dolls rarely just stand/ sit. I want them doing things. Even if they are just sitting, I want them to look natural at it, and few people I know sit at attention all the time.

Mobility joints make me giddy. I've never seen hands in person, but I love looking at them. DC's extra joints are fascinating to look at. And, as much as people say it is a pain to deal with, the idea of paying with one of the fancy DS bodies makes me swoon.

I just love being able to get the illusion of life out of my dolls, and more joints makes it easier.

    13. I like extra joint's, because it could help with the posing ability. The only thing that is bothersome, is when people awkwardly pose dolls with extra joints, I mean they could look very elegant and graceful or... like the exorcist girl. I like DC body joints, just not the extra neck piece (Which can be removed), I think their jointed hands are wonderful looking.:aheartbea

    14. I'm not a big fan of a ton of joints. In all of my handlings, it seems like the more joints, the more fiddly the doll becomes. I'm sort of fond of just the old style single jointed bodies personally. When I first saw jointed hands though, I thought they were the coolest things ever created. After having seen alot of them, I'm not as fond of them though. They generally look a little... I dunno... blocky?? to me. There are some out there that are pretty though. I'd had to be able to handle a pair in person before I could really make up my mind.

I'm not especially fond of DC jointing. Not so much the amount of joints, but the placement of said joints is odd. I do like the single joint in the toe, such as in Twigling's dolls. That's sort of neat. Again, I'd need to check them out in person before drawing a final opinion on those as well.

I do hate lower torso joints. They're awful. They slide around during posing and pants get stuck in them. Blah.

    15. I like a lot of joints, especially the DC dolls. I have not had one in my hands to experience how they are really, but they look fun, and the slight alien look, I find appealing. I do not know how this affects posablity, would love to find out sometime. I have dolls with only one torso joint, but would like to see one with two. I agree that joints may not be pretty, but I found them odd and intriguing when first I viewed them on Pinterest. It seems that the more joints a doll has, the more detail there is in all parts of the doll.

    16. I like the basic joints, even double joints, when they work well and are pretty. But I don't like a lot of joints. Three part bodies, jointed hands, jointed feet...those are all a big nope for me! I do have some three part torsos, but I definitely do not prefer them. I think two-part with the joint along the rib cage looks best and if done right, gives me all the posing I care about in a doll. I hate a joint across the hips. Hip bones are one of the prettiest things about a body, and that line ruins it! Especially if the doll will be wearing low riding pants.

I don't like all the extra DC joints either. My Queena is on the K-body-05, but I took out all the extra pieces! I just like a good compromise between seamless beauty and posing abilities.

    17. Joints never bother me until I searched for Dollshe 35S...
Yeppp... not a fan of that many joints,,

    18. Got to check that one out!

    19. I prefer extra joints, but not so much entirely jointed hands. I like DC hands though, that's as far as I personally go with jointed hands.

    20. I'm not a fan of jointed hands- they just don't appeal to me. The elongated fantasy Doll Chateau bodies with the extra joints are pretty, but not something I think I'd ever own. Those Dollshe bodies though- OMG they look like creepy arthropod bodies! I'm repulsed and intrigued at the same time. I'd love to have one to play with, though. Aesthetically they don't look good to me, but the engineering is interesting. I do like my dolls to have very doll like, rounded joints. Especially on the more childish sculpts. So I'm more drawn to simple ball joints, or single joints.
