1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Too young for the hobby?

Jan 23, 2010

    1. I started collecting BJD when I was 15, and discovered them when I was 14. I bought my first one completely on my own, and had to wait for a few months before I could afford to buy him a wig an eyes. Also, I bought and customized a little Obitsu doll for my little sister for Christmas, I think he was 13, knowing she would take great care of her and craft amazing things for her (and I was more than right).
Anyway. Now that I'm older, I think the age factor is not as much a factor of discrimination as general attitude and behavior. As a wig maker I did work with some pretty young girls, still in medium school for some, and everything went really well : every time, they were really nice, polite, patient and had a lot of understanding, it was a real pleasure. But I've also seen on other forums newbies or young collectors just arriving in the forum, not reading the rules, not trying to read the forum and figure out where is the best place to ask their questions, and just posting randomly in places of the forums not at all apropriated questions they would have known the answers just by doing their own research on the forum. Also being rude, asking in the commission part if someone could make them a personnalized doll for 100 euros and when, after several answers explaining them gently why it wasn't possible, they'd just ask the thread to be deleted and... open another one.
All of this to say that it's the behavior that really matters, and the maturity you can show in your interactions with the community. If you're polite and patient, there should be no reason to be left appart because you're too young. This hobby is shared by people of a huuuuge age-range, and to me, it's part of why it's so amazing and rich !

    2. Personally I think that as long as one does not use the doll for extensive play, it's fine. Personally, I played gently with my dolls, (even if they weren't fragile) so I wouldn't know how other kids play with their dolls. But as long as you have enough discretion not to place your expensive doll in harm's way, in my opinion you are mature enough to own a BJD.

    3. My daughter got her first BJD when she was 9. She collected two more and did photo shoots with them. By the time she 12 she was too busy with horses and gave the dolls and their things to me. They are still in perfect condition. She is now 14 and has no interest in dolls whatsoever. :...( It depends on the person not their age... :sweat
