Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. I would love to take Arnold somewhere fun, like Disney World, but I would freak about how to get him on a plane, and then getting past park security, and then worry about how to haul him around all day, go on the rides, eat, children who might try to take him, etc. I guess it wouldn't be worth it :(

    2. I will be taking all three of mine to Oahu to an Anime Kon in April, I would feel bad if I left any at home so all three will come it will be there first trip off the Island Oo then in May I will be going to Las Vegas to visit Family and once again all three will come my mom said take only one but I couldnt do that. ^^; I hope it all goes good when the time comes

    3. when I lived in Japan and my sister and friends came to visit, we went on holiday to Kyoto and lugged my SD13 all the way round for days, just so I could get a pic of him next to Kinkakuji Temple. And when I came to look at the photos he was stood right in front of it and you couldn't see it at all...
And by the end I was begging my sister to carry him for a bit!

      But yes. It was fun!

    4. I take one doll with me, and leave the other(s) behind. Although I may be changing this when I go to Houston in June--I'm mainly going to see two people, and each of them wants to see a different doll.

The way I transport them is (flying by plane, always) in the same bag I carry them to meet-ups: A shoulder bag that's long enough for them to sit up, and tall enough to completely cover the tops of their heads when the flap is closed. It's the perfect carrying case, to me :D

    5. I always take at least one doll with me when I travel. It's fun taking their pics at different cities. Like Julidc have mentioned, they are great as my stand-in for photos. Plus, it's nice to have your doll waiting for you when you get back to the hotel room.

Most of my trips are overseas, no problem so far(knock on wood).

    6. I pretty much take my girls eveywhere! I'm taking Darith to St. Paddy's day in Baton Rouge! I'm making her an outfit and everything! Haha! I hope I can be done by St. Patrick's Day!

    7. Corpselight- Bring her over to Australia some time :wiggle

Me- Realistically I know I am really panicky about taking Corpse anywhere outside the country, I am with Gayle here, worried they would be confiscated for some reason, or worse, that someone at customs wouldn't believe he was just my doll and would think I was trafficking or something and break him to check (OK REEEAALLLLY paranoid but I have watched too many bad movies lately) But like I said, the past few years we have had something like fifteen Australians arrested for drug smuggling in Bali, and then there is the terrorist threat over there, so I think there is a real risk taking him through Customs over there. But I would hate to go without him:atremblin

But like I said, I am pretty paranoid anyway, I am one of those people who would get in trouble at school when I did nothing wrong because I LOOK guilty (nearly got expelled in year 12 cos I was home sick on the day when all of my friends piled into one of their cars, a girl with the same name as me, and then got caught by a teacher while they were playing hookey, the teachers assumed it was me! Thank god they actually called my mother and cinfirmed it...). Can you imagine how bad it would be to look guilty at customs. I almost always get dragged through and searched anyway.

    8. I WAS planning on taking mine to Wales with me-but due to coursework, final shows etc I cant go :(

I had plans for them digging castles (Too's would rock the beach, of course) dipping into rock pools, burying treasure etc....guess I will have to put them on hold until next years holiday! I already have some shells and driftwood knocking about, so maybe I can steal a small childs sandpit and pretend, haha...

    9. My family doesn't do that much traveling, but just a few days after I received Phaerie was the All-State Large Group Speech Festival (eek, what a mouthful!). I couldn't bear to leave her home alone for two days, so I took her with me. Two groups from my school had made it, so I had to put up with the teasing of my friends, but luckily, at my school, everyone's fairly close so they teased, but didn't really mean to hurt me. I knew I'd be able to trust everyone not to be rough with her.

She went everywhere with us- to the hotel, to the actual festival (I heard several people say, 'Look at that girl- why is she carrying a doll?!'), and into the restaurants we ate at. It was amusing to see everyone's reaction, and Phaerie didn't have to be lonely! Best of all, when my group performed (radio news- we just played a CD, haha) the judge seemed rather put off at commenting on our performance while Phaerie sat placidly in my lap. It was fun. ^_^ And I got lots of pictures.

I recommend taking the doll if A.) you can trust those you'll be with and around and B.) you can ensure safe passage there and back.

    10. It's split with me, really. I am not going to take any of my dolls with me on my Spring Break trip to Washington D.C. next week, and I'm going to leave my boy with my best friend. She has three DoCs of her own, so I know she'll take good care of him.
However, on my trip to A-kon I'm going to take at least one of my dolls, as they'll probably be part of my costume.

    11. I've taken dolls on two non-doll oriented trips, and I won't be doing it again. It was a lot of work and trouble to make sure they were packed securely and to carry them around for what essentially ended up being five minutes of show and tell.

If there were some pressing reason like doll gathering in the area or a convention, sure, I'd bring a doll, but if it's just a vacation, the dolls will be a lot happier at home, and I will be a lot happier not to have to look after them.

      Marcia.

    12. Darith-Haha Corpselight...I would love to come visit you...

O thats awful! Well I'm not to worried...but I might chicken out before than that has been known to happen! Haha!!! I'm hoping to do a photostory! I'm trying to make Darith green hair!

      ~Alyson:aangel:

    13. Oh yeah, Treya and Imbri (when she %^#%&@@#@ GETS here) will be going on any vacations I take. When I attended training for my current job I brought Treya with me. She ate cookies and watched HBO & porn while I slaved. I like the comment about them being "stand-ins". That's so true.

    14. This is great! You guys have all REALLY helped! If we do go, I think I'll get a carrier from AngelRegion and bring my Evie with me, as carry on of course. It seems like the safer bet, and I've only ever forgotten one thing on vacation and that was when I was 5.

Besides, my sister brings her instruments all the time! And Eve's not necessarily a tiny thing that can easily be lost ^^

But now I don't know whether to take her to college with me! I'll be going soon, well, soon enough, and I trust my future roommate, being that she's my best friend and knows absolutely nothing about BJDs except what I tell her ^^.

    15. Taking dolls as carry-ons is ussually fine, but be warned: the AR case, if not awesome, is also incredibly klunky. It's a pain in the ass to carry on buses, or long trips, BUT, if you sit next to a window, then stand the carrier up next to you, it doesn't take so much space. That's probably the best advice I can offer you. ^^. It's a hard case, though, so even if it does take a fall, it's unlikely that your doll will be hurt in the process. ^^. Good as gold. Happy travels~!

    16. I'm going on a trip soon and taking all of my guys to keep my sanity. I was thinking of putting them in a carry on size suitcase instead of my carrying case since i'm bringing 3 SD sized dolls and one Yo-SD. I love to bring dolls on trips or anywhere that might have pretty photo places.

    17. I have planned to take Fraud to HongKong in a couple of month's time. But now that I have another I am contemplating which of the two(or both) should be taken there.

I am just kind of worried with the hand carry size might allow me to have my 2 boys with me. If I have to leave any behind, I think I might ask my friends to take care of him/them.

    18. Well, I do think I'll bring Eve with me...maybe...

My other choice would be to leave her in the able care of my best friend, but, her step-brother is a little questionable as to what he would do if he got his hands on my Evie... *shudder*

So I think I'll take her with me, actually, I really hope we don't have to go on this vacation, but whatever...

Maybe I could leave her with my neighbor... I really wanna take her though!

    19. I had to angst about this somwhere where people might actually understand what I'm going through. For the first time ever I ended up putting ellian in the main luggage on a flight...and so in the end of what would have been a wonderful weekend....everything was ruined...because my luggage was lost. I had so many things in that suitcase that were completely absolutely irreplaceable....but nothing was more irreplaeable than Ellian and Seisha. Because Seisha's head was in the bag with ellian. But Ellian has always been the doll I've bonded most with....the one I've loved the most and now I feel like a part of me is missing. Its hours later and there's still no update on him...he's still missing and the airports have no idea where he ended up. I'm so worried I'll never see him again and even if they gave me enough money to get another dollmore dean he could never...EVER be my ellian. Nobody could ever be the same. I just want him back so badly I cant stop crying. I cant even begin to explain how if feels....only that I dont think I've ever been so freaked out in my life. I really hope none of you ever have to go through this in your lifetime...

      ~Centi

    20. OMG you poor poor thing!
Pester the bastards, get your luggage back! Let them know there's an uber-expensive doll on board, and you will expect them to pay for his loss.
Im sure they'l do everything they can to track down your luggage.

I hope you get your doll back!

      *hugs*
