Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. I have a large hard sided satchel type thing I picked up at the thrift store for about $2 that works great when going to doll meets. I have fit one SD, one MSD and one tiny size in. Plus there are a few compartments for clothes, wigs, etc. I also just purchased a clear backpack for trips when I might not want to carry the big suitcasey thing around. I thought clear would be fun so the dolls could be seen and they will be on my back, so they will be safe!

    2. my sister takes hers in a big laundry basket...

    3. When I went to Japan I took my yoSD wrapped in some bubble wrap with her little plastic face protector, in the top of my travel bag. I dragged her everywhere and she was just fine.

    4. When I haven't just carried Tristan, I curled him into a fetal position and put him in one of the two parts of my kaiban bag. He didn't have eyelashes at the time, so now he'd need something on his face...

    5. I have some kind of water-proof, gigantic beach-bag. It's big enough for my girl to be in and I can pack loads of other thinsgin there too, and its easy to carry and its stylish! :D

I reccoment wrapping your dollie up in something soft to protect his hands (fingers break easily! JIKES!) I also kept the face-protection plastic thingy and put it on my girl to protect her faceup. I use the hairnet too so I can unpack her and she still has her wig all combed out and nice.

    6. I took him to work today. I ended up carrying him on my arm. I also took a bag with the two pillows that came with him and a blanket to wrap around that if carrying him got too annoying but it was fine.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am going to keep them in mind if I havent bought a DOD bag before I go down to melbourne for Manifest this year, which i plan to take him to.

He looked so cute sitting on my knee on the train. :D

    7. endorwitch, do you have any 'green bags' for shopping??

He could sit in there on a nice folded up towel, you would even have room to wrap him up :>

I use violin and viola cases to carry my kids around.. no one looks at me twice (well, except for the time I walked into a jam session of muso's - they were SORT of dissapointed to find out I didn't have a real fiddle :/ I sang instead to pacify them)

      Kind regards

      Carol

    8. I disagree they are resliant-some things dont break as they hit the ground at odd angles.
My two have taken dives and Ive always caught them. My bee-A fell two inches onto a dark wooden box and stained her face.
My Zen took a nose-dive off her previous owners desk and snapped a finger clean away. Its how they fall-if they fall face-down they tend to chip their nose or lips, but depending on hos their hands are position you can lsoe fingers!

    9. I think this goes in general discussion...? Sorry for starting so many threads lately ^^;

I'm going to pack Boe up and take him home to LA with me. I was going to ship him back to Ferret to avoid the hassle of flying him home, but... my... mother wants to see him XDD

Boe is Hound-sized. I'm 99% positive I'll have to unstring him, because he's simply too long to fold up inside my rolling laptop bag. I really want to take him as a carry-on, because I'd be too worried about him getting cracked and chipped otherwise >__> No offence to airline workers - but they throw suitcases into the plane, no matter how many 'fragile' stickers there are. XD

      I was thinking of packing his unstrung parts in bubble-wrap and either fitting them in my rolling bag, or putting them in a plastic bag as my second carry-on. I'm pretty sure I could manage to fit both bags under the seat for takeoff/landing and avoid putting them in the overhead XD;

However... I was also thinking - might it be possible to simply take Boe in one piece as a second carry-on? No bag or anything - just carrying him through, with a bit of cloth or something to protect him if I have to stick him under the seat for takeoff/landing. Has anyone done this? I believe I'm going non-stop, so I wouldn't have to cart him around too much. And if it'll keep him safe, I could stand the embarrasement of being stared at for carrying a doll XD But is he too big to be allowed? :-/

Any advice? Have any of you SD13/Hound owners carried your boys on planes without carrying cases? :'D

    10. I usually sit my Caleb in the bottom of my backpack and he's good to go.

    11. I haven't been on a plane... but for long distance trips:

I wrap fleece around my kids (the big fluffy kind, I have one long strip for each, and wrap them mummy style) and put them in my backpack. That way they're buffered from minor scratches, and I can still hold them close in my lap.

    12. I've never flown with a doll either, but maybe if you used a large tote bag for him? I don't see anything wrong with your original plan, but since the airport could get busy, someone might bump into you and cause his wig to fall off, etc etc so having him completely covered in a bag seems a little safer.

    13. Okay, so this is another one of my silly questions. If there's a previous thread that answers this question then feel free to delete mine mods!

I'm going on vacation for 2 weeks this summer, and as lame as it sounds I know I'm going to miss my dolls while I'm gone. I just like having them around to play with. I know that on vacation you're out doing things but one of the places I'm going for one week is a place just for relaxing. So it would obviously be nice for me to have one of my little friends there with me.

I'd like to bring my Glow in the Dark, Spyder, with me but I'm terrified that something might happen to him while I'm on my trip. It's not like I wouldn't be careful with him, I would be as careful as I always am, it just seems like I have less control over what happens to him while on vacation (it might just seem that way since I wouldn't be in my own house).

I could always bring another unlimited doll of mine with me, since as bad as it sounds, they would be more 'replaceable' if something were to be damaged on them. I might just be paranoid and there's fewer dangers for him the more I think about it, but do you think it's a good or a bad idea to bring a limited doll with you on vacation?

My friend brought up a good point: I bought him to enjoy him, and if bringing him on vacation with me is enjoyable, then just the fact that he's limited shouldn't keep me from bringing him along.

So is it a bad idea to bring a limited doll on vacation?

    14. I guess if you do take your doll(s), get some sort of vacation insurance. I think that should cover your belongings while on vacation. But, of course, you'll have to check the fine print. They're is probably some sort of price limit that they put on things like that. Have a great trip!

    15. I'm going to take Roo with me to Hawaii xD Mostly because I can't pass up a chance for awesome Hawaii photoshoots. I know, he might yellow in the sun, but... I just want to have him with me :'D He'll be coming to Otakon as well.

    16. If I were going South to visit my family, I'd take my girl.

But, I wouldn't take her out of the country.

I do suggest insurance....even all the time, too. What if there was a fire or robbery? You would want to get some money back to replace the doll.

    17. I think if you're careful with him, it should be fine. ^^ I'm planning on taking Elliot with me when I go to the virgin islands this june. I bought him a carrier so he'd be safe. I'm bringing him for the same reason, I want to have him around. I get lonely when he's far away from me. X'D

    18. Sigh.....I am in the same situation. I am going to Asian for two weeks and want to take a dollie sooooo bad.
I still haven't decided what to do yet.
I would not check them in with my luggage, but carry them on. So , I might have to sacrifice taking some other things on....
Sorry! I am really not help at all!
I will totally be stalking this thread to see what you do and what ideas people come up with.

    19. I think this is as much about you as it is about the actual vacation! I'm exactly the same way, and I'll be honest--taking my doll with me on my last vacation only added to my stress because I was always worried about where she was if she wasn't with me (and whether or not she was being transported securely if she wasn't!) I think if I were going to a B&B to stay indoors for a week and read, I might consider taking a doll. But if I planned on doing anything outside on my vacation, or on traveling, shopping, and visiting, I wouldn't. Certainly there are others who don't have any trouble with this, but for me, it was more stress than it was worth.

    20. I think it would depend. I'm poor, and my vacations consist of two cons, one in town and one out of town. I'm planning on taking Tristan with me to both (he'll be cosplaying at the one out of town....) he doesn't have a carrier, but I'm one of those people that carry their dolls around most of the time, so if it was a shoping/relaxing/sightseeing vacation I can see taking a doll (if you're used to draging them around). If it was more a swimming/something more active/messy vacation I'd say no.

As for taking him on a plane or something, I'd make sure the carrier was the right size for carry-on lugage, and you might be able to squeak in a spare set of clothes or something to double as extra padding.

      That's my $0.02 anyway...
