Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. I take mine a lot of places, both around town and on longer trips to conventions and meetups, and I've never had a problem. If you're flying, I'd suggest having him in a carry on and not risk him getting knocked around with the regular baggage. With my own dolls, I get enjoyment out of handling them, spending time with them and taking them places, so that's what I do. I have collectables that sit on shelves, but my dolls aren't any of those.

I think if you plan ahead and use common sense, then your doll should be fine. Ultimatly, do what you are comfortable with and will bring you the most enjoyment.

    2. bumpity :O i definitely need to know this. i plan on traveling with my dolls, too.

    3. Well he's a limited and white skin, there's so many potential disasters that could occur. I think if you're having any doubts at all you should just leave him at home where you know he'll be safe, although maybe a little bit lonely :daisy

    4. Thanks for the advice people :D I'll definitely have some kind of bag/protection to keep smudges and damage off.

I still want to know if anyone's taken a bigger doll on a plane without a carrying case ^^

    5. I've heard of people just taking their doll on the plane in their arms with no problems, though I doubt that'd always be the case. I'm taking Coal with me on a two-month trip to Japan and I'm trying to figure out the best way to get him there uharmed.

I will be staying with a host family for a week and a half when I get there and all my other goods aside from what I need for that week are going to be shipped and stored to my more permanent location. I don't think I could trust having him shipped and stored with all the other luggage like that, so I plan to put him in my carry on suitcase wrapped in my clothes and with his blanket as support, but the bubble wrap sounds like a good idea too.

I'm really paranoid about what my host family might think so I hope I can get away with just keeping him in my suitcase while I'm there.:sweat

    6. hm.. I'm going to be flying to Utah soon over the summer and I believe if I can carry my pillow, a HUGE stuffie unicorn, and a backpack then I can just carry Tallon and Hakuji... with no nothing on them. Just make sure his wig is secure! lol But if they try to make you put him under the seat, don't. Just buckle him on your lap with you, it'll work. xx or you can easily wait til they leave and grab him. (like a rollor coster, they say take off your glasses so you do, but when you start to pull out put 'em back on! ><) But have fun on your trip!

    7. I brought a limited and my FCS doll with me on a business trip, because it was long and lonely and seeing their faces at the end of the day made things just that little bit brighter. :) I say bring your doll - and bring the one you want to, not the one you feel you'd have no reservations about bringing.

    8. I'm putting Noni and Eve into a tote and just taking them on with me as carryon ^^;

    9. Most airlines let you carry a purse or backpack as a second carry-on item. When I flew with my boys, I put them in my DoD carrier and just took them through with me, and never had any problems since it counted as my second item ^^. You could probably put him in a backpack or messenger bag or the like and carry him through without problems.

    10. If you weren't going to get in trouble for carrying one, I would just hold him/her in my arms the whole time through. I would ho,d as tightly as I could so people couldn't steal him, and I would stay away from bustling crowds as to not accidentally drop and break him.

I don't see a problem with carrying them, either. No moisture, no having to take apart-ness, no nuthin'.

Plus, if you and him are wearing the right outfit he'll look real cute with you.

    11. When I travelled interstate, flying every few days, I kept my 3 DoCs all packed together in a SD bag and hand carried them through the airports and flights. I was going to carry one of them in my arm, but the airport was so crowded that I got worried. They all survived the flights alright, and i'm thankful for that!

It was interesting to see the officer's expression though, when the bag went through the xrays and they saw 3 human like things in there.. XD

    12. That would have been great to see the expression on his/her face. ^_^
I'd have to agree with most of the posts on here. If you carried your doll in a doll case, it should be fine. Have fun on your trip.

    13. SJNero - what's funny is, I believe we'll both be wearing Ohio State attire... XD

    14. Celebare, if you manage to take him along as a carry on, and it's allowed, could you manage photos of you and Boe in the airport??? XD I don't believe they allow photography in airports anymore, but I think it would be hilarious as a short photostory.
      "You want me to do...what???"

    15. Oh my gosh, I want to do an airport photostory SO BAD XD I've wanted to put Roo in an airport photostory ever since ordering him, practically :'D It'd be hillarious to get a shot of Boe right before going into the x-ray like - "...What is this madness?? >__>;"

Sadly, I'm terribly shy and will be embarrased just to have him... :'D But I might manage a shot of us waiting for our flight, or something.

    16. i'm thinking of getting a carrier, since there's a possiblilty that i may visit my bst friend in melbourne. what's the best carrier for an SD doll? so far, i've put him in domuya's bunny bag and tucked him in a canvas tote (the poor brat had to lie on his back with his feet in the air, though) but i want to get him a proper carrier, since it'll be an overseas trip.

    17. Recently I visited my sister in Ireland.

I'm from the central Finland so first I flew from Kajaani to Helsinki, stayed there for the night and then flew to Dublin.

I didn't take a carrier for my Bluefairy Jerome (Tobias) and put him sitting in a laptop bag instead. I wrapped him in a small towel from his upper torso and he sat nicely in my bag. He went trough the first x-ray in Kajaani just nicely, no trouble there.

In Helsinki airport I had to unpack my stuff from the bag, propably they were 1) either bored since there was not so much passengers at that time or 2) it was a bit suspicious when I had some electronics in my bag too. They didn't ask anything about Tobi or anything, just wanted to see all my stuff separately. When they saw them in x-ray everything was ok.

On my way back home in Dublin airport I took Tobias out from the bag before the security check and put him in the box and said "This is fragile, please be carefull with him" the guy just smiled and didn't say anything. He went trough without any problems and when I did the same in Helsinki there was no trouble at all.

Next time I will take a carrier to my doll, just to keep them safe. Even tough Tobias was fine in the bag he was in. :) They do allow a few little bags in the plane and you can put your bags under the seat infront of you to keep them safe (unless you sit near the emergency exits) if you don't want to stick them into the upper shelf thingies.. XD (yay for my english!).

And yes. I enjoyed my time in Ireland very much, and so did Tobias. :)

    18. Has anyone put their dolls in a hardcase suitcase?

I'm moving abroad and taking my two girls (CH Soye & Unoa Lusis) with me. Obviously, I can't carry both as carry-on luggage 'cause I don't have a doll carrier and they're too big to put in laptop bag.

I plan to wrap them in bubblewrap, put them in the middle of the suitcase surrounded by clothing. Do you think that'll be safe?

    19. If you have the bubble wrap, LOTS of padding, and are VERY careful with your suitcase, and keep it with you at all times, I'm pretty sure your dolls will be fine, Eiko. (I carried around Phir in his actual DOLLBOX once. XD. And he was fine, as long as I was careful with him.)

But yeah. That sounds like it'd be alright for your dolls, with caution.

    20. That's the problem : I wouldn't be able to take the suitcase with me all the time. They'll go bubblewrapped and padded into my hardcase suitcase which goes into the cargo bin >_<
I know a lot of people say airline staff throw the luggage around like w00t. But I've travelled loads of times, often putting fragile souvenirs into my hardcase suitcase and they always came out fine.
I just hope that'll be the case with my girls too.
