Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. Just got home yesterday... I had no trouble at all getting Boe on the plane :3 I was wearing my sweatshirt, so he was in plain sight... still, relatively few weird looks! XD And the guy on the plane next to me barely even glanced at him.

      So overall... traveling with a 70cm doll without a carry case is eeeeasy :3

    2. Hello all! I'm going on vacation to Canada this sunday and I keep forgetting to ask @_@;

      ~But is going on a plane with your dollies as a carry on okay? (like, so the people not stop you to look in your bag or anything?)

      ~Does anyone know how many bags you can bring for carry on? I heard it was a purse and a duffle bag, and thie becomes a problem as I have three minis and only two can fit in my DoD bag so my newest boy has nowhere to go @_@;

      ~Orr~ Would a DoD bag be counted as for a purse?

      I'm sort of fretting about this because I really dont want to end up leaving one of my boys in my luggage v.v;

      Thank you all~

    3. I'm not sure about Canadian air-travel... But here it's one carry-on and one "purse"... Now, they're pretty lenient when it comes to what a "purse" is. It's essentially anything you can tuck under the seat in front of you. Yes, DOD bags work, as I took a DOD bag loaded up with 3 MSDs as my "purse" to Katsucon...

    4. Carry on is fine. As for how many you can bring, that's a question for the airline since it depends on their policy (you can probably find that out online if you go to their site). Since you're talking about minies, you can also get away with putting one of them in your purse since your purse isn't usually considered as a carryone piece of luggage.

      Anyway I think the best thing for you to do is to check out the website of the actuall airline since it's going to have all of their policies on it and it will tell you what your luggage allowance is.

      Good luck and have a great time.

      Christal

    5. Don't worry, they won't ask or anything, I fly a lot and the last time I flew with dollies so I was nervous, but no one said anything and it all worked out fine. I had them in the largest carryon you could buy, and I just put them on the skycheck. That was with 3 minis, a 60cm head and a Yo-SD. No one asked me anything. Said my 5in pink heels were cool though XD

    6. bluegirlwish~ ooh, thank you! Did you also take a duffel bag on the plane with you as well? o.o;

      christalblu~ Well, we are going out of San Fran.. so I think they only do the canadian customs on the way back? I dont know. But I'll be sure to check the website before packing :3

      ChocoMeijin~ Ahh! thank you! That also takes a weight off my sholders. I hope I'll be fine :3

    7. Okay, I posted this before, but I can't find the thread so...NEVER put dolls, or other valuables into checked luggage!!! Usually you are allowed 2 carry-on items that can either fit under your seat, or in the overhead compartment. Check your airline's website to get the exact dimensions, and if needed think about buying an inexpensive "pilot case" or small pullman, to hold your dolls. When going through ariport security, I always tell the person scanning that they'll be seeing collectible dolls with jointing. This way they already prepared for the somewhat odd image the x-ray will show. Hope this info helps you to have a fun & safe trip! :)

      Hugs, Juli DC :D

    8. I went to Florida and back home multiple times with my cat in a cat carrier, a purse, and a laptop case. The max was supposed to be 1 purse and 1 carry on to go in the overhead storage, but they let me go through.

      May I suggest not putting your dolls in the overhead storage... people's heavy items that should have been checked did a number on my laptop bag. x.x

    9. Your in NoCal? Wull, hay! I'll be in San Fran in about four weeks, LOL! I carried a carry-on-suitcase. But a duffel-bag will count as a Suitcase, I think. As long as you have only two bags, they don't really care. A friend of mine used her Volks bag as a purse and then used her suitcase.

      My mom, who's an incredibly frequent traveller for business, has this rule of thumb: Only check if you have to! It just causes a hassle, and if it gets lost, then well, crap. XD; Should you buy some things and need to check on the way home, then that's fine. If it gets lost then you'll be okay, they just gotta locate it and send it back to your house!

    10. When I took Azure to Florida, he was in his Volks case and my other carry on was a dufflebag. I didn't have any problems getting him on. His case was too long to go under the seats, but he did just fine in the overhead compartment since he was packed very securely (hands wrapped, face shield and two pillows).

    11. I always just grin at the security guy as he looks really alarmed, and then I laugh and tell them it's a doll. Someone thought Adelais was a Fetus, tho... O_o;

    12. Put it under the seat in front of you, and not in overhead luggage or checked luggage.
      It will be your carry on, and this insures it is okay on the flight. <3

      I did this last month coming home into Canada, and insured a lot of breakables didn't break. None of them did! <3

    13. julidc~ I know! I looked at the last post about a month ago and I went to look at it today and failed to find it. And thank you for the tip; I'll try to remember to tell the guy that there are dollies in there X3

      Arashi~ Yeah, Thats a good idea, I was planning on having my doll bag under my seat :3

      bluegirlwish~ Oooh! really? San Fran is like, the best place to hang out. I hope you have fun! :D and wtf? they thought it was a fetus? O.o;; that is.. very odd. the porportions(sp) wouldnt be right for a fetus XD;

      Thank you everyone for the tips and personal experiences to give me an idea of how it will be, I'll prolly bring two bags, my DoD bag and a duffle bag thats a similar size. Wish me luck! :D

    14. I hope so, too. We have no idea where we're going XD but it should be fun! And yeah, they did! They stared at it for a moment and then asked, " is....that...a ...fetus?!" I guess they thought I had some back alley abortion or something; But It was hard to stop laughing long enough to tell them he was a doll!

    15. Awee! well what type of stuff do you want to do there? I could prolly give you a few good suggestions :3

      And how weird! I've never heard of something like that before! ^^;

    16. (I'll carry on the rest of that in PM. ;D Don't wanna go OT!)

      Actually, another X-ray person asked if he was an Alien Baby. XDDDDD;;; He was so amused, he saved the scan image and sent it to all of his fellow X-ray buddies. XD

    17. XDDDDDD! *dying*

      Omg, I love that so much.

    18. (that sounds fine X3)

      omg! thats insane silly! XD I wonder of what type of reply I'll get X3;

    19. >_> *had to look this up herself for her own trip*

    20. Why not just use your DOD bag as a purse, and put your real purse in your normal checked luggage? You can keep your ID/passport/money in one of those neck wallet things if you're worried about it being stolen, but the other contents of your purse could be put inside the DOD bag with your dolls and you could just transfer that stuff to your real purse when you get to Canada. Or if you have a small purse, just shove it inside the doll bag when you go through security/customs and then take it out once you're cleared. That's what I did when I took Air Canada to Toronto last month. They really weren't enforcing the carryon limits anyway, as my sister made it past security with a purse, a computer, a shopping bag, and a small duffel. ^^; But just in case, make sure you can cram all of your stuff into two bags long enough to make it through the checkpoint. Once you're through security, nobody really cares what you bring on the plane as long as you're not taking up too much space.
