1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. no, but I go to school in japan so I'm going to be gone for a long time so I cant stand the idea of leaving my dolls (or my bass) behind.
I'm thinking of maybe looking into getting a smaller case for the instrument, since supposedly guitars count as a carryon (and it IS a bass guitar ;) ) and maybe just have the smaller of the two in the case and carry Toshi (cp el) in my arms?
oh, i wouldnt recommend vacuum sealing your carryon...customs sometimes likes to have you open them and then you couldnt fit your stuff back in.

    2. Why not have the guitars Expressmail shipped over first, before you go? Any hotel/residence will hold shipments for your arrival date. Since Fed Ex is now handling all the "guaranted Expressmail" (door to door tracking, shortest transit time, the equivalent of EMS), might cost about $50 or so, but would make your actual travel a lot easier.

    3. hmm good idea! I will definitely look into that!
might even send one of the dolls over with it (eek I know) to save on weight!

    4. I had this same question *_* I'm going to Texas for Christmas and I'm worried about my doll being checked or even confiscated! :o
      Thats what my mom said might happen so I'm really scared. I will have just gotten him to so that'll be a heartbreaker. I feel a little better now hearing how everyone else didn't have a problem XD I'm still worried though >___>;;;;;
I may leave him home...but I really dont want to do that since I'll just be getting him but I may have to just out of paranoia...

    5. I took four of them on a plane with me over the summer. I got some REALLY weird looks from airport security because they were all in pieces in a bag, but they let me through.

They did call over a few other people to look at it on the scanner dealy before letting me go, but it was fine on all of my flights (and I went on several).

    6. I had my two dolls as carry on flying from Tokyo- Wienna- Copenhagen. No problem. When I checked in the woman did ask what was in the bag and I said 'dolls' and she said no more...
I guess it's so much harsher in the US though.

    7. Oh thank heaven! I'm probably going to be flying to Germany over Xmas break, and I was VERY worried about bringing my boys with me as carryon items. @__@ Luckily I'm pretty sure their carrier will fit under the seat, and it'll hold all my other essentials (mp3 player... would die without it). I was semi looking forward to getting weird stares from the x-ray people, that would be great. But I DON'T want them to think my boys are a bomb or something... ^^;;

    8. Like I said in the other thread, I went from Seattle to Birmingham and back again last Christmas with Teacup (Elf Shiwoo) as my "personal item", and Harumatsu and Tien Jen (Shiwoo and Dreaming Shiwoo) packed into our courier bag as my carry-on. I also had Issun (Banji) in my coat pocket.

No one in the security screening lines gave Iss or the twins a second glance. The people who noticed Teacup were more curious about him than threatened. No one took any of them as a security risk.

The cabin crews didn't even make me stash Teacup under the seat for takeoffs or landings. (BSR thinks that they assumed I was afraid of flying and that he was some sort of comfort object. I'm not the least afraid of planes, but I did have a pretty good grip on the little guy, so I guess it was a fair assumption... )

On Thursday, I'll be getting on another set of cross-country flights... going from Seattle to Pensacola, Florida this time, for my brother's wedding... and Harumatsu and Issun will be going with me again. Harumatsu as my personal item and Iss, as usual, in my pocket. Hopefully everything will go smoothly again.

I'll update my post when we get back. ^_^

    9. Um... okay I feel really dumb for asking this. But what's a personal item? Is it something you carry on your person, that is NOT your carry on baggage? I'm asking because I just realized that a book/my sketchbook wouldn't fit in Adrian's bag so... I was wondering if you're allowed more than one carry on, or if there were other options to get them on to the plane where they'll be accessable to me. ^__^

    10. Exactly... Usually it covers things like women's purses, books you're reading, hand-helds, iPods and that kind of thing. Basically, small personal items.

    11. For my trip back to Canada(from Japan), I'll be bringing back Sofie(SD13 Elena).
I had bought a Volks carrying bag, now according to my itinerary/receipt for Air Canada the max for carry on is:

      Maximum Size Maximum Weight

      1 standard article
      23cm x 40cm x 55cm 10 kg
      9" x 15.5" x 21.5" 22 lbs

      1 personal article
      16cm x 33cm x 43cm 10 kg
      6" x 13" x 17" 22 lbs

Now I have checked the Volks Bag and the length it a problem.

      17cm x 18cm x 68cm(approximate)

So it looks like that I am going to have to put the Volks bag in to my Suitcase and put Sofie in to my book bag with my laptop and other stuff.

Or should I buy a small suitcase and but Sofie in there?

    12. I pack my MSD sized padded travel case(Looks like a laptop bag) and I'm off to where-ever. :) The only issue I have with him is, the people in airports.. the luggage is handled rather roughly and you have to be careful someone doesn't plop something on your doll's bag.. and the fact people stop and ask question about the doll makes is difficult to get to your gate on time without seeming rude.. I ALWAYS take him as a carry-on. *_* I fear he may be squished in the luggage bin.

    13. Exactly to your point, I have flown out of Bradley Int'l Airport with bjds several times over several years, and nobody has blinked to see my dolls in the X-ray or asked to see the baggage more closely. :)

And sometimes my baggage had a Hound or a 60cm doll, two minis, two petites, and a bunch of really-tinies, with clothes, wigs, shoes, my underwear and enough clothes to get me through a couple of days, etc. Good thing the bag has wheels. *_*

    14. I'm actually going back home tomorrow with my boy and girl! I take them with me when I fly always. Wherever I go. I was really afraid at first but... it's all okay! They are my carry-on! But security is no problem and no one ever really questions my bag. =D My kids love flying actually.

    15. Um, when I flew out last September, the personal item was limited to ONE...that mean purse or whatever. Nothing else was allowed. I thought it meant purse AND something else and found out I was wrong. So I had 5 dolls in one bag, with purse, teddy bear, and then with their stuff I bought at the con I went too, all crammed into one bag, as the other had to go into the belly of the plane.

So if it all won't fit, leave it home!

    16. I never had any problems bringing my doll on a plane. I even bought a hard suitcase for her to travel in (and it matches the hand luggage measuremants exactly) I even enjoy seeing her pass throu the x-ray machine since I then get to se her internal skeleton (she's an obitsu)...it kinda looks like I got a tiny human with me

    17. I just got back from Wisconsin and there was no trouble at all. They just went through my bag to see if I was doing anything illegal [because I'm REALLY suspicious ^_^] and smushed her around a bit. But other than that, it was fine!

    18. I never had a problem with my volks bag as a carryon. Even though its a tiny bit long, it has the same capacity, just different shape. So you should be okay. Just carry it through as if its supposed to be there.

    19. All right thank you I'll try that, or I could call the Airline ahead of time and see if it's alright.
Having her in the Volks bag would give my girl a lot of breathing room, which she will be happy about.

    20. I would never fly with BJD unless I put them in a large purse or carry on. Even if suitcase was heavy duty with unbreakable locks would fear stolen as well as damage. So if your only taking one use the carry on and leave laptop home, as even rougher to carry that about but that's me. MK
