Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. I'm suprised no one has said this, but heres a suggestion.

If you take a rolling suitcase (as a carry-on, I think airlines allow that, I don't fly though so be sure to check first) you can place the box your dolly came in in there and put stuffs such as jackets or clothes to cushion the sides... then again if your box wasn't sturdy... well ya know.

But I'm going to Chicago this spring (in a car) and my girl will definatly come along.

As for hotel rooms place your doll in the box on the table or what-not and cover it with a jacket, she should be fine. For even more protection, as some one else said use the 'do not disturb' sign if you must leave your doll in the room for a day.

    2. My family has a cabin up in the northwoods area. I know that when I buy a doll, I'd take it with me when I'd go visit the cabin. There are just waaaay to many photo opportunities not to. Especially since the chipmunks and birds up there are so friendly. I'd be able to take a picture of it feeding them. XD

    3. I suppose it would be ok if you had a safe place for them. I always feel better if I'm staying in a home whenever possible.

    4. I brought Andy home from Colorado on a plane. Had no problems and I carried him on my arm at this point. Got some weird looks but we survived.

As for bags, if you look around the shops big bags are in fashion, which can easily be converted into doll carrier bags. I've just got one that takes Andy (SD13) in a sitting position with plenty of room for padding. You could probably get 2 or 3 in it safetly, and still be ok for carryon restrictions.

    5. I travel every week by plane for work. You can have 1 carry on and one personal item. I have flown on vacation with my dolls. I took 3 dolls w/ me to BJDC in Austin this past summer. I have a Dollmore double carrier, which held 2 dolls and fits under a seat. The other is a single Dollmore carrier and it fit in the overhead or under the seat. I had no problems carrying both onto the plane. However, you can't have a purse, etc. so I had my purse inside the doll carrier.

As for hotels, I put my dolls in the dresser drawers rather than leaving them laying out in the open. I figured the housekeepers aren't going to go snooping through clothing drawers but might be tempted if the dolls were laying out.

    6. I heard a horror story about taking a doll on a trip before. This girl and her dad went on a trip and what happen was, she was beat tired and left the poor dollie in her dad's car. when they came out of their hotel the next day the car window was smashed and the radio and doll was missing.

    7. Ohh, GOSH.
*That* I can imagine happening. Many of the carrying cases I've seen look like big ol' purses. I stow everything I own (under seats, etc.) when I leave the car but that would be just a worst case scenario.
In fact, I'd just carry it around with me like a paranoid mommy.

My first thought about dolls and travel was 'No way!' but come to think of it... I'm a nervous flyer and it might actually help. Except I'd get weird looks and stuff.

    8. Ditto!

      I'll see you there Ann

I want to bring at least one of my girls to the con, but I'm worried about trying to get them through security for an international flight, especially since I've heard tales of them being paranoid enough to slit open childrens soft toys and confiscate items such as baby-sized nail clippers and baby bottles of brest milk - heaven knows what paranoid fantasy-weapon they could come up with for an elastic strung resin doll with metla s-hooks and glass eyes.....!

    9. i have doll carriers in two sizes to take my dolls with me and when i go on a plane, i take them with me into the cabin as carry-on baggage. i would never dare to put them in a suitcase or something.
travelling with my dolls is always stressfull because i'm paranoid about people running into me and my doll-bag.

    10. well going on the plane was fine! it was pretty funny the men were standing looking at my things coming through, and it turns out they wanted to see my shoes!

I have a pair of new rocks that i wear all the time, and they have a lot of metal bits on so they were looking at the x-ray and was like wow what were they?
      then went to look.

i did show the doll too, and one said "wow expensive doll and shoes?"

anyway, on the flight it was fine. i stuffed the bag under the seat.

    11. So far I have only taken him on a car ride for a hour and a half, but the issue is that he is so huge! I don't have the money for a doll bag and even if I did, that would be still too big. I am using a gym bag (never used before this) until I can afford something that is made for him. I think that other wise I really don't have any issues...more like it just is annoying...

    12. Hi there,

it looks like my dream of going to Australia for a year as a student might finally become true, and as I was thinking about some of my hobbies that I’d have to give up for the time, I was also wondering about dolls.

I don’t think I will be able to buy any more dolls than my first one (that has to arrive yet) before I go, yet I know that I’d miss her terribly, and I don’t want to not see her in a whole year.

Do you think it might be a bad idea to take her with me? I probably won’t take my beloved Flecki, my plush horse I’ve have for ten years now, but I just want to take “someone” with me whom I know and to whom I can tell my worries, and for hugging when I’m homesick.

Has anyone done this before? I’ve read so much about taking your dolls on vacation or by plane or something, but a stay abroad?

    13. I flew from Iowa to Kentucky, then from Kentucky to Minnesota with a set of 60cm Obitsus in my backpack next to my laptop... the dolls were disassembled for easier transport.

Then traveled from Minnesota to Puerto Rico... in my drag-along carry-on was my two 60cm Obitsus and my newly acquired DZ AOD hybrid. The only snaffu that happened during this particular trip is something that any doll-owner would cringe at... Someone mistook my bag for theirs in the overhead bin while basically playing musical seats, and almost walked off with my babies! *gasp*

So, important to keep proper identification on your stuff... and attach something to your bag so that you can identify it from a distance.

      *nodnod*

    14. i usually leave my boy at home if im going for a shopping trip overseas(eg. Hong Kong or Taiwan) or else i'll have to bring so many things home, including my boy's carry-on and my luggage full of my shopping stuff.

    15. Kwincy i took one of my guys on our week long trip to Hawaii. I carried him in my backpack on the plane, and sometimes left him in the hotel. He came with us on our little side excursions much to the horror of my teenagers.

When he got sand in his joints from the beach I gave him a bath in the sink. I actually made my one and only "photostory" and it is posted here:

      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146271

It is kind of cute, you can see some of the things he experienced. I have to admit I did take DM Momo because is the least valuable member of my group, (but he is loved!). I also bought several changes of clothes, but I kept misplacing them, so work out a system if you take extras.

I would encourage you to take your bjd, you will have many photo-ops, and you and your family hopefully will have fun with him.

    16. Hi Anrui,

      In all honesty, what you can and can't get away with in terms of carry ons is based on your carrier, where you are traveling to, and your status with said airline. ^^;

I always use one particular airline and because of that I have status on said airline. Last time I took said airline, I brought a 22 inch wheelie, a purse, and a backback all as carry ons. I do generally fly long haul flights and again, I have status. I'm sure if you pay to fly Business Class you'll get even better service.

I've traveled from NY to Japan with MSDs, Yos and PFs. After spending a few days carrying around my MSDs with me I now only bring the smaller dolls lol I have left my Yos and MSDs in my hotel rooms in Japan as well as hotels elsewhere. My Lacus (Chinatsu) has been to Japan quite a few times, she is probably my current favorite travel doll. One nice thing about bringing a doll with you is chances to take pictures of said doll at various tourist sights. (Lacus and Kira went to Zion.)

Unlike everyone else, I've actually 2x now brought a SD/SD-13 boy home in a checked in suitcase. In both cases, (a Kun and a Tony) they were packed in their original Volks boxes with original Volks pillows. I then used my clothing to further cushion the box. Tony survived the trip with no damage though his box got a few nasty dents in it. Kun and her box suffered no damage. (I think the airline was extra careful since they'd lost my suitcase going to Japan and had taken 3-4 days to find it and had ruined it ~.~ ) You can get your check-in luggage marked "fragile." (The suitcase with Kun in it was.) I would not personally risk it with a super hard to replace LE, but for something more replaceable, I probably would do it again.

      Good luck to other travelers!

    17. I'm currently at school in Tokyo. I brought both of my dolls with me in my carry-on, along with a few other things (extra outfit in case they lose my bag, toothbrush, travel stuff, etc) Aside from carrying the heavy bag through 2 airports and on the subway/trains (one of my dolls is a full size luts boy) its been a pretty easy trip.

    18. I'm a really nervous flyer too. On the way to Colorado without Andy I was a nervous wreck, but having him on the way back really did help. I did get some weird looks though!

    19. I love to take someone with my when going off island. Its norm Yue my Yo but I took Quatre (EL) with me to Vegas.
I was lucky that going there no one was in the seat next to me so he had his own.

I didn't take his carry bag and hand carried him the whole time. Didn't want anything to happen to him.
I had a blast taking him everywere in Vegas and snaping pictures. People kept asking me questions about him. I was also alone so he kept me company. But I didn't take him out after dark.

When going to Kawaii-Kon in Oahu, I took all my dolls 6 of em.
kids don't ever do that it wasn't fun.
      We would leave a bunch at the Hotel they were fine. We often would line up there shoes and throw there clothes on the ground for the maids ^^;;;;

Next Vegas trip its just the SD's who are going and this Kawaii-Kon its all the small ones.

    20. I took my doll to Germany with me, and although it was at the end of December, when the airport is really really really busy, everything was fine! I just carried her through customs and around the airport, and didn't leave her alone anywhere. I actually didn't get as many wierd looks as I thought I would.

I love bringing dolls on vacation. They're like little traveling buddies! =]
