Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. I hope its alright to bump this thread up.

I'll be going away to Japan to study under a exchange program for about 4months. Now the thing is, I'll be hosted by a Japanese family and would LOVE to bring my boy along. I really don't want to leave him at home for so long and it would be awesome bringing him to dolpas and visiting the actual stores.

Besides the long trip on airplanes which I'm familiar with, would the Japanese families appreciate me lugging a 65cm hunk of resin over to their place? I mean, technically I can just have him in my room and leave him in his bag if they're really against him.. But I'm still worried.

Anyone actually had experience with this?

    2. When I did homestay I just left my boy in my bag and didn't even tell my family about him. Now, my homestay was shorter than yours, and I'm now currently living on my own in Japan, but in general I don't tell people about my dolls and if I am going to take them to Sato/Dollpa/Sumika I keep them in their bags till I arrive at the location.

I can't say your family will have a problem with your doll, but I can't say they won't either. Most likely if you go on about it they may find it strange, but this will be something you'll have to figure out when you get there. You'll be able to tell whether or not it's appropriate after you meet your host family.

    3. I'm wondering if I could get away with bringing a double SD carrier as a carry on. I'm going to japan next month and no way in hell are they getting packed with my luggage o.o

    4. Car rides? In the seat next to me.
Plane rides? In the seat next to me.

      *shrugs* It's just safer.

    5. Carefully double-check the carryon limitations for your airline. I flew with a single SD carrier earlier this month and didn't have any real problems. The total measurements were well within the size limitations for my airline, but I did find that, because of the length, it just barely fit under the seat in front of me.

    6. actually for travel, does anyone know where I can purchase a face protector? I didn't have any problem finding a carrying case for a doll. Doesnt' seem like anyone in the US sells face protectors

    7. From what others have said, oddly enough, a 7-11 Slurpee cap works! (The dome ones). Just cut slits in the sides, and thread ribbon through them and tie it around your doll's head. I've also heard Dixie cups work too, but I'm not sure how it would work with some of the bigger dolls heads.

      Hope this helps!

    8. Volks sells them out of their LA Store: http://www.volksusa.com/tools---materials-other.html

    9. personally I'd take my Jasper as carry on, but that just me. I'm going on a long road trip this summer and he's just going to sit in the middle seat between my brother and I ^_^ Jasper is very excited, as am I!

    10. I travel overseas a lot. It's a big hassle; connection flights, customs, etc. I used to carry my boys in one of my luggages, but last time, when I'm coming back to U.S., some of my stuff got stolen so, I became a little paranoid about carrying them in my luggage.
I just got myself that carriage bag from Dollmore. It's quite amazing. I haven't tried it on plane yet but my boys fit in perfectly.
It looks like a normal handbag. At least, I don't need to worry about them getting stolen now! :daisy

    11. Next February, I am going on a school trip to France and Spain. It will be my first time in Europe. I was debating whether or not to bring my doll with me, not because of the flight, but the actual trip. I don't think space is an issue because she is mini sized, and can fit easily in my purse. However, I would hate to see her stolen or damaged, and if that happened during the touring it might cause problems, because the schedule will probably get pretty tight while sightseeing. However, I really want to get pictures of her at famous landmarks, and without mishaps, I think it would be really fun to travel with her.

What are your thoughts on this?

    12. That's a nice looking bag - and it looks like the shape will fit better in available carry on space than the long, narrow style.

    13. okay, heres my issue. Im going to work in Ireland this summer for 3 months... I want to take my kids... my dad is going with me for the first couple days to get me settled in and acquainted with the city... he has no idea that I own these dolls. He would flip out if he knew how much i spent...

my question is how many people have had their bags searched when their dolls are in them?

Im thinking I just may take them apart (unstring them, etc) so if my bag does get searched for some reason, i can just tell my dad that theyre models to give me something to do if i get bored while im there... idk... thats really my biggest worry... is getting my bag searched causing dad to find out...

geez... im 20 i should be over this lol.... but dad controls my college funds, so when he says "save your money" I save... or try to.

ill be coming back on my own... so im not worried by that at all

    14. That's another reason why I like it. It's almost impossible to carry big bags on planes and those long ones, I'd never think about taking one with me.
It's really hard to carry them, especially in the crowded areas. :(
Hopefully this one is going to work perfectly! ^^

That happened to me once. I had a MSD in by backpack and they opened it. They just took a look inside and gave it back to me.
So, they didn't want me to take him out or something but I guess unstringing them would help. :)
I was freaked out when they told me to open the bag though! (Like; "OMG, WHAT ARE THEY GONNA DO TO MY BOY!?!!") xD

    15. yeah i think i may just unstring them and put their hooks in my regular luggage... :) that way anything valuble is on me and it wont look suspicious on the xray lol

    16. Japanese people tend to be kinda non-confrontational about things! So, even if they think it's odd they won't give you a hard time about it! They might even think it's cool! One of my friends on my study abroad program was a lolita and her host family thought it was amazing! It just depends on the type of family you have.

Also, I'm hoping to be working in Japan soon and I was worried about bringing my boys, but I can't move and leave them in America! So, I'm glad to see that other people have managed to do it without a problem! I was a little concerned because they are both huge. Kijo is 60cm and Asami is 70cm!

    17. Helps if you ask a question, especially since we've got 41 pages of answers for you. :)

    18. Even though this is an old thread, I'll bite.

I've traveled with Lucciola on several occasions, though mainly to Hawaii. :D He was inside his bag & nobody ever said anything about it, even when I took him out for several photos of him on the plane (shyly and very ninja-like). All I got were weird looks every now and then.

    19. I haven't- the last two trips I've been on haven't been the best situations for BJD travel. XD But I think we're going to Vegas this summer and if we're flying there (which I hope we are, otherwise I might just have to drive there now that I have my license @_<) and I'll probably take one of them. (I wonder what the terrible heat does to the resin though. o_O Anyone know of any negative consequences besides UV yellowing? It'd be so cool to take pics of them in front of one of the famous hotels but I don't want them to....er... melt. XD)
Anyway, I have a carrier so I'll just use that and stick it in my carryon. Wonder if security guards will think I'm nuts when they Xray my luggage.... lol.
