Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. I feel like an utter dork. @_@ I'll be going to the Austin BJD convention in September, and was trying to think of how to take my dears with me, since I'm entering the costume competition. I was agonizing over it: Put them in their costumes and take them, hope they don't need ironing? Put the costumes in separately and leave them nude? I use a padded duffel bag for a carrier, and I was thinking that I would have to use that (which would wrinkle up the clothing even if it was in separate baggies, due to squishing)...

      And then I realized it.

Anyone ever see those rolling scrapbooking totes? @_@ I have two of those. With solid sides. And that are big enough that I have sat my dolls in them before. ...And that fit the carry-on dimensions. I think I'll be putting the costumes in separately and leaving the dolls nude with some padding in there, and their face masks. But... Uuuurk. Why did it take me so long to think of it??

    2. I flew with Misao twice. The first time I got no trouble. But this time they pulled me aside and looked through my bag. I get really nervous because Misao's head cap is really hard to get off. I hope they don't try to peak inside his head...I get really mean when people mess with my baby's head for some reason.

    3. I've flown alot with my dolls. When going through security I tell the person next to the screener, (don't actually bother the screener), but I always mention 'There are dolls inside, they scan weird'. Haven't had any problems at all. Only had my bag openned once and that was for something else in the bag. I've flown international and domestic, and have had no problems.

    4. Some undies on the dolls would be good. You don't want to be embaressed by security! XD

    5. XD Well, on my girls, of course! Probably leave them in their camisoles, corsets, and panniers. My boy Kaleb, well.... Nothing would embarrass him. XD
Good idea on the underwear, though. I could leave them in that because it wouldn't matter if it wrinkled (for the girls). Thanks!

    6. I have flown once with my doll. I got stopped at security and they just wanted to know what was in the box. I told them it was a doll and they were like, "Cool!". I thought it was funny, they didn't even open the her box.

    7. I told them when I flew last year there were dolls in the bag, but they never said a word or even laughed.

    8. Ok I have a kind of specific question:

I'll be travelling to Japan with my school for January 6-23rd or something like that. We're only allowed two bags for the whole trip, a checked bag, and a carry on. We'll be travelling all over to a lot of the typical sight-seeing bits but several times on the trip, our checked bag will be forwarded to our next site and we'll only have our carry on for a few days. Would it be worth it (for the pictures, the experience) to take one of my kid's along? or should I not risk it/waste the space?

    9. Me? TOTALLY worth the picture possibilities!!!! :celebrate
Take one and hand carry. :)
You'll be so glad you did!

    10. Oh absolutely worth it! Take the smallest one you have and make sure he/she stays in your carry on bag!
      Looking fwd to pics! :B

    11. I have to take a doll with me where ever I travel. I can't be away from them. I recently left home for a month and missed my dolls terribly. I usually wrap the doll (s) in bubble wrap or soft clothing and put them in my carry on luggage. That bag is more important than my purse!

    12. Ah thanks guys. I was just worried because we do a lot of walking. I guess I'll just have to find a backpack big enough (I only have MSDs so it wont be a big deal). Ill feel bad leaving the other one at home though. lol.

    13. I was worried about taking a doll with me this year but...

When I flew from London Heathrow to San Fransisco and back in April this year I took an SD sized doll in my carry-on bag, she was completely ignored by the airport security people who were onlyinterested in double-checking the (empty) tupperware milkshake shaker/mixer I had in the bag (for mixing diet nutrition packs while on holiday) because it showed up as a bottle in the X-ray image.

I lost the mixer/shaker while in the US so didn't have it with me on the return flight and my carry-on bag, full of dolls (I bought two tonner dolls while in the US), went through security without without incident.

    14. I would like to being my doll on holiday, Takes lots of pictures too. Use the pillow that comes with him and wrap him around and out him in my very durable bag. Or if possible bring one of those pricey BJD cases specially made for them.

    15. Hello,

I will be travelling to atlanta georgia with my doll from vancouver canada. Thus I am flying. I own a dollzone carry case and curious if anyone here has had trouble bringing something this size as carry on. Here it fits the dimensions then says I am allowed one carry on and one personal item. So if the doll case is the big carry on, is a backpack too big for a personal item? I've never flown with a BJD before so I"m rather spazzing on how to bring him on board plus the things I need during the flight (it's a 5 hour flight so need my cd's and such).

      Any advice/help appreciated thanks!

    16. I've flown sooo many times in my life. Usually when they say that you are allowed one personal item along with your carry on, they generally mean something like the size of a handbag (unless it's like a briefcase, a small backpack, or laptop, which is also allowed). Anything larger than that is usually considered a carry on bag. So I think a backpack plus a carrying case would be too much and you would have to check one or the other. I think when you see people take things like guitar cases with them on the plane, the guitar case is generally their carry on item and then they have a much smaller personal item that they keep beneath the seat in front of them. You are allowed one carry on item that can go in the overhead compartment, and only a small handbag or laptop/briefcase to go in front of you.

The only items I've ever taken with me on the plane are my carry on and my purse!! I have yet to travel with a dollie. But I remember one time I had to check my roll-on bag when I also had my school backpack with me. They consider things like that two carry on items. I guess if it can be considered luggage (anything that's not a purse, briefcase or laptop), it probably won't be allowed and will have to be checked with the other luggage.

What I would do is pack the carrying case in my suitcase to have checked so that I could keep what various items I need (want) with me on the plane. I would anyway, unless I felt like going on a 10 hr flight without my nintendo DS, or my cd player... or extra clothes...

Is there any way you could pack him in your carry on instead? You could always pack the carrying case in a suitcase to take with you once you reach your destination. But if you really wanted to take him with you on the plane, your best bet would be to take him in your carry on bag (unless you could comfortably fit all of your belongings into his carrying case). Pack his other things in his carrying case to put in the suitcase so that you don't have to carry around all of his possessions (and that'll leave more room for your cds!!). That's just what I would do anyway. I have this stuffed animal that's about the size of an SD that I ALWAYS travel with. She goes in my carry on all the time, even though she takes up quite a bit of room. But I can't stand to pack her in my suitcase. You would probably like using a carry on with wheels that will easily go overhead. Plus those usually have straps that keep things in place.

    17. I would use a doll carrier. With th prospect of turbulence... well, I just put baggage around the case. I rarely travel alone. In fact, with the prices being so high, I usually do not take a plane. Fine by me. XD

Edit: A while ago I found a carry on baf I use that would be perfect for my girl! :D I'm traveling overseas this summer, so itsa gonna be perfect!

    18. You could also try just carrying him in your arms and check his case with your luggage. It shouldn't be too bad if you aren't changing flights/walking all over airports for 10 hours with him in your arms. Just make sure his wig is stuck on firmly...

    19. I take my child on the plane twice.
Both time I carry them on, cause I think put thim in suitcase is just not safe.
First time is just me and my EL, so I buy a doll case to take him.
2nd time is me, my El and my musedoll, so I have to find a small suitcase with wheel. Pack them safe and take them with me.
Small suitcase is really good, but it just a little bite too small....so I'm still looking for the right suitcase!
