Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. im traveling at xmas time with my 2 year old son >< AND my two dolls. I plan to pack them in a doll carrier and do my best to bad with them baby things (diapers ext) to get as much into that bag as i can, and then take a good sized backpack with me to carry everything for my son.
I would rather with with out my clothes (which is easy to replacE) then we with out my dolls or my sons food ect.
My son had also learned how to treat my dolls, so sometimes he plays with them (I take their wigs off) but es very gentle and its one more thing to keep him entertained in my lap for the flight.
My advice, dtich the chage of clothes and get a doll carrier. or try and pack clean underwear short and a t-shits (small and easy to compress in zip locks in with your dolls or in your laptop case.
Thought I do have to tell you, uncle sam is cracking down on illegal file sharing so much, you'd be better to put you laptop in your suitcase (if you have a hard side suit case like I do) because my friend came to visit me recently and they took the guy in front of hims lap top and refused to get it back. I don't know anything about airport security and i wasn't there, but that is what i heard.

    2. well, I trave with my doll from Korea to Canada twice. I carry her on my carry on bag, severally, and I just take her on the plane. Nothing happen. First time on the palne, I was so scare to carry her. So I gave to one of crew for take care of it, and she kept it so safely. Just make sure you got lot of cushion for it!!!

    3. I took my SD boy with me to Texas this summer when I went. All went smooth, I just put him in my man bag, and took him as a carry on. It was all good, though I was kinda scared to bring him with me because I didn't know how he would react to the humidity. But it all worked out!!!

    4. I actually two took MSDs in a backpack as a carry-on on a Greyhound bus.

KEEP THE BAG WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES, I RECOMMEND THIS HIGHLY.

I kept them straight legged, arms around a small stuffed animal.

Head: wig net for the wig, and a face mask

Hands: wrapped in thick socks, and held around a small stuffed animal, you could also use another sock

Body: I dressed them as I wanted them wrapped them in one of my shirts. I then wrapped them in two layers of bubble wrap around the entire doll.

Feet: left them alone since they had shoes on.

      Hope this helps!

    5. Good golly... My dad mentioned to me that I might end up flying to Hong Kong alone this year. (I go to Hong Kong every winter with family) and I'm already wigging out.

I definitely want to bring Saif since I plan to buy dollie stuff in Hong Kong.

      >_> Security guys and customs always scare me to death. I stutter a lot so I always sound like I am lying...

Though... last October, I admitted to US customs that I killed people (Ubisoft invited me to play Assassin's Creed and while explaining purpose of trip, I said I was invited to play a game called Assassin's Creed and the customs guy was like "Assassin's Creed? So you kill people??" and I just said I did it in 1191... *_*) and I haven't been dragged off as a terrorist yet...

Which doll carrier is the most padded of them all? (and MSD size) >_> I think that might calm me about Saif at least a little. I haven't got a doll carrier yet.

    6. It's great as long as your careful and confident.

    7. I took my boy Glyph, a Kid delf bory, and my little one, Desic a bambicrony gun, on vacation with me a few weeks ago. It went fine, I had no problems taking them on the plane with me. You have to be kind of careful in larger airports though. I had no problem taking them through security on my way out (-lives in a small town..x.x-) But on the way back they wanted to take everything out of my carry on because they didnt know what my dolls were. I got really irritated because the guard going through my bag wasnt gentle at all.. I had told her once, nicely, to becareful, but when she ignored me, I snapped at her. I got a glare, but at least she was alot more careful. Other then that, things went prefectly well. ^^

    8. I am kind of interested in taking my doll with me somewhere, just to see people's reactions! xD

Although I am going to Egypt in the winter, I will not be taking Nyxem with me. It's just not practical, especially seeing as how I will be traveling all over the country, on and off planes and boats... yeah, not a good idea xD

    9. I haven't brought any dolls on vacation yet, but I guess I could suggest it. But first go out for a day without your doll and see if it'll be safe to carry him or her around. (Like, if there's a lot of bumping or something of that sort, it's best to not take them out in case you drop them.)

    10. I put my dolls (luts soony, mini-gem, bobobie sprite) in my carry on luggage between the body pillows they came with. (the soony was sorta in a sitting position on her side) The lady at the X-ray machine said, "that is a big doll you have in there". I was like, "yeah", nervously thinking, "please don't open it, it took forever to pack them in there like that". lols.

    11. I'm hopefully going to Egypt with my family on a Nile cruise. Now I know my parents hate my BJDs, so that rules out my MSDs going, so I was going to bring my Bobobie or Puki or both. What's the best way to securely package a Tiny to take on a plane in hand luggage? I've heard about using glasses cases as doll cases, but my Bobobie has some poofy clothes, so I doubt she'd fit in one!

    12. See my post above. It imght help.

    13. I just wnat to know, cause i want to travel with him. Will he be ruined or something bcause of pressure on the plane?

    14. i don't think so, but then again, i've never even been on a plane before. <----------is afraid of hights.

    15. Nope. Other people have done that tons of times without problems. However it might not be a good idea to have him in your luggage because luggage can get lost or even dammaged. If you have him as carry on there shouldn't be a problem.

There's a thread you might want to check out. Travelling with your dolls.

    16. I was wondering something also. Whenever I used to take my dolls anywhere, I just carried them because it was only my DOC Too for the longest time. Now I have 2 DOCs and a pipos robin on the way, so I need a carrier of sorts.

The thing is all the doll carriers are like $40+ and only carry one doll. I was wondering if I could use some type of small rolling backpack/suitcase thing. Has anyone done this? Any recomendations?

    17. I just took a trip from the US to the UK and I took my Sharmin (MiYuu) and three tinies (2 Monnemei sisters amd a Banji) and a Fantasy doll Amber.

I took only a carry one bag and a rolling suitcase- I had a small purse too but I made sure I had room in the carry on bag for it just in case.

The carry on bag had two main compartments and a small side zippered pocket. I allowed most of one compartment for the dolls. I made a fleece bag with a tube in the bottom that I filled with more fleece (I made it all so it would be easy to pull apart if I had to let them search it).

I made a fleece doughnut with a linen veil that came over her face and tied down to protect Sharmins face and I wrapped the three tinies in a bed made similar to a sleeping bag with attached pillows that tied all around with grosgrain ribbon. MiOu (FDAmber) was wrapped in fleece.

I put MiYuu (Sharmin) in first- she was laying down with her knees somewhat bent and her hands on her thighs. On her but slightly to the side was MiOu whose fleece also covered MiYuus hands and feet. On top opn the other side went the tiny bundle. Then I folded the fleece bag over them and put them in the carry on bag. It was 6 inches wide by 17 or 16- whatever the limits are.

At the top of their section I put a paperback book to read later and my phone charger secured in a cloth bag.

I put them on the side without the outer zippered compartment so I would remember and make sure I kept that side facing me so any jostling would bounce them into my nice fluffy padded side :B

On the planes the case slid under the seat- them to the top- but I slid them out once we were off and they rested under my calves. I was able to take them to the restroom with me that way too. The other side of the bag held my purse and the zippy bag of liquids and my meds .

I had absolutely no problem at all. Only once did they come close to squishing- one guy was shoving them through the scanner thing and shoving down on the side and I told him I had fragile dolls- but before I could say more he;d looked at my face and noticed the worry and immediately lifted his hand "Oh! Oops!", but even that was not too bad- it was more absentminded then worrysome.

Only the first security scan took more then a few seconds- I thought there might be a problem since everyone is at least partially wired so would look odd- but nope. When I left PDX they were saying it was almost as bad as the Thanksgiving rush- and I believe it- it was *crowded*!

Even so- I was never more then an arm away from my bag. I came into Heathrow and left from there- via Canada Air. Very pleasant all around- except for the miles and miles of hallways to pass from one section to another! :)

      Hope this helps!

Dahlia looking out the bus window- it was soo hot and crowded- I darent take them out! Sorry for the blur- had my hands full :B

    18. hmmm,i thought about taking my doll to the family reunion this week,but...its a family reunion lol.i don't want to leave her at home, but im not sure how my country-side family of at least 200 are gonna accept a purple-haired,$200 doll O_o got any tips??

    19. I had the same issue recently. In the end I chose to leave my boy at home as I thought it might be awkward and embarrassing explaining to my family why I was carrying a doll. My doll is SD size and would have been impossible to hide. We rarely have reunions, so I don't know them well enough to be comfortable doing weird stuff in their presence, but know them too well to not care what they think :sweat If your dollie is MSD sized or smaller it should be fairly easy to hide them in a bag when you arrive and you could then sort of feel it out to see whether it'd be acceptable to drag them out and show them off. If your dollie is SD size though I guess you'll have to consider how they're likely to react, how much you care about their reaction if negative, and whether it's going to be an informal reunion where anything goes or whether it'll be more 'elbows off the tables, smart formal wear required and say sugar instead of s*** when you drop your butter knife.'

    20. this might be a stupid question but I watch a lot of tv xD
I see people caught by customs cuz they have, say, wooden artifacts or smt. does the customs at the airport ever make you pay taxes/fines/import duties or whatever for your dolls?

taking 3minis,a tiny and an sd carry on in a trolley is a bit much isnt it? I also need to bring my laptop, cellphone, camera and adapters and maybe a book to read on my 13hours flight.

after arrival I have to add that to a big suitcase that I have to drag all the way to campus, not knowing the way at all!

I am still debating taking my dolls or not, I'm going to study abroad in HongKong. what if I cant trust my roommates? o_o
