Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. I was just wondering how you all transport your BLJD to/from meetups, conventions, houses, etc. So far, I've only just packed him back into his box once or twice, other times he's ridden with my passenger on her lap, or in the seat by himself (buckled in, mind you). But I've looked at some very pretty coffin-shaped cases on some websites and others that look like flute cases (this makes me laugh), and others that use old suitcases, or toolboxes, et cetera. What's your dollie's preffered method of transport? :3

Also, you know those "Baby on board" stickers? I think a "Dollfie/BJD on board" sticker would be simply hilarious x3

    2. lol That would be cute. I'm not sure I'd wat to advertise mine though. ;)
I have a doll carrier I take them in, it's good. Has little straps inside.

    3. if theres not something already out there like this, i want to construct....

get one of those things thats like a front clip on baby carrier thats big enough for a 63cm doll, then modify the holder into a backpack-type thing, and build a case around the holder, so that the doll would not only be protected, it would be secure as well.

    4. :D That'd be awesome.

    5. Someone please link me in the right direction if this has already been asked!

So, I'm looking to fly out of state soon to visit friends and I want to bring dolls with me. I'd love to take four (3 SD size, 1 MSD size) but I'm nervous about even bringing one on a flight. The doll carrier I have is a long tube and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't fit into the overhead compartment very well and it only fits two boys as it is. I'd prefer not to disassemble everyone, though I will if there's no other way.

My plan was wrapping everyone up strung (candy style like they come from the company) and putting them all in a bag to carry with me. Alas, I'm unsure about weight restrictions and if that would be too cumbersome to carry on.

For those of you who have conquered flying with multiple dolls, please share your experience! Is carrying them on with me in a bag possible? Do the little metal bits such as S-hooks set off the metal detector? Any information is good and welcomed information.

    6. LOL I'm so worried. In May [when I'll actually have my doll] I'm going to be taking 2-3 dolls of mine and a friend's to a convention and we have to take buses...I'm so worried about them cause I can't hold 2 dolls for 3 days. x__x
I love this thread, it helped me a lot with averting more panick...

      Also, question: For all those in Can/Us/Whatever, does Greyhound have a limit to the sizes of bags placed under seats? I've seen how violent they treat bags that are kept in the trailer behind. ;__;

    7. To answer your question about S-hooks ... yeah, probably. You won't be allowed to carry the dolls with you through the metal detector anyway, and it'll have to go on the x-ray belt.

I shoved a stroller about the size of a large SUV through said x-ray today, so a long tube carrier is peanuts by comparison. I see guitar cases, cellos and trombones put through passenger screening regularly. Whether or not something of that size has to be checked under the plane once the passenger gets to the gate is entirely up to the individual airline though, so caveat emptor.

I've managed to pack my SD-size boy into a small hard-sided roller suitcase by removing his head, and then carefully packing his head carefully into a separate box.

Yes, I do live in an airport. :) (Well, work in one, but same difference after a point, no?) Refer to my previous post on a similar issue here too.

      Hope all that helps!

    8. Alright so I might be flying over to the next state and I really want to take two of my dolls because I might be -staying- in that state. The dolls I want to take are my Hound and SD13, so, yeah, big. I really do not want to have to un-string them...

Is it okay to carry them out in the open and hold them on the plane? I'd put them in a doll carrier but that is the one the Hound came in and it's pretty big!

And does the x-ray harm them at all?

    9. Xray doesn't harm them. You can carry them, but try to get a bag they can sit up in. I got 2 of the dollmore carriers they sit up in. A Hound would have to have his knees up, but he'll fit. My SD16 has too ride that way. She is slightly taller than my SD13 and Delfs.

I used one when I flew to Kentucky last year. It fit in the overhead bin nicely.

A big beach bag would work, just wrap them up with face protecters.

    10. Eek!

For the duration of my next school year I will be studying abroad in France....

      :sweat

Out of curiousity, anyone recommend I do or do not take my MSD with me? I'm thinking no, but eh.

      :S

    11. When I went to Oahu last was kinda funny, I took all my smaller dolls with me and shoved them all in a large Volks bag. Well when I went threw security and was waiting and I saw there face's and they had the WTF look on them as they went threw the X-ray. I really had to keep a straight face. After they took my bag to the side I was asked what was inside and I told them my dolls they asked if they were collectables I told them yes. They opened it and then took some swab of the inside of the bag and put the swab in some scanner? and then gave them back to me.

I didn't have any porbs going threw Oahu to LAX and back when I went to CA but I only had Yue (YO-SD Piccolo) with me and my bag was packed to the max. XD

    12. I recently got a wooden and leather suitcase for 10 bucks on a flee market. I'm going to put padding and strings on the inside so my doll can travel Rozen Maiden style :)

    13. I have yet to travel on a plane/train with my boy, but when I take him to meet-ups I wrap him in a big fleecy blanket and put him inside a backpack or tote bag. So far it works pretty well, though getting him in and out of the backpack is a bit of a pain -_-;

    14. I took a rectangular shoulder bag that is water proof and sewed up 2 silky pillows to match the one my Feilian came with and used them to like the bag. I have to bend Moth's legs to get her to fit, but i just put a little pillow over her and plop my BB Mach, Viola on top of her and she holds Snug, I then put the pillow that came with Snug over him and zip them up! Lol, they are safe and cuddly on their way too and from college!!

    15. I travel alot for work and I like to take at least some of my dols with me! I actually just got this awesome bag that was made for me that holds 6 dolls in their carry bags plus all of my doll stuff that I have (clothes, shoes, extra wigs) and my camera. If I only take two or three dolls I can even fit my laptop in there as well!! Here is a link to a picture http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3230/3004499240_645214c4f7.jpg

the women who made it is awesome I found her on etsy! She will try to make anything for any size doll!

    16. The trial run with my yoga bag went well. I took my SD-sized girl, put her face mask on, wrapped her in a fluffy towel, and stuffed her in the bag. I was hoping to use the cushions she came in, but they were too fluffy. Plus there should be room to put my Puki on top.

Out of curiosity, do anybody's dolls travel with their wigs on? My girl has a loooong brown wig, and the only thing I could think to do was put it on her head and wrap it up with her. Otherwise it might get mushed in the bag. It seemed to work, but it was just a trial run.

    17. I've taken to braiding Muniya's long easily tangled hair whenever I know she's going to be travelling. For some reason, I hate seeing my dolls bald and that includes during travel. (that and the velcro on her head snags a lot of stuff too)

      >_> I still need to get a proper doll bag though. All my dollies just get dragged around in their boxes, minus once when I shoved Saif into my school bag with his pillows which didn't go too badly.

    18. The last time that I traveled with my doll. I put her in my carry on with a hat box, I just wrapped her in a piece of very soft polar fleece. It worked great. I would have loved to have a carrier for her at the time but with all the other stable stuff in the bag with her it was great.

    19. I know I already posted here, but I brought my Model Doll Ipsae monahan with me to Mexico last year, and though she stayed in the hotel room the whole trip I had no bad experiences! In fact, on day we came back, and the cleaning lady had set her up on the bed, reclining against the pillows like the lady she is with a flower in her hand. XD I have a picture of it somewhere, I'll post it when I find it.

    20. Have anyone ever brought three 1/3 dolls on plane? =_= I know it's a bit ridiculous to carry with three heavy 1/3 kids on to the plane, but I feel bad leaving anyone of them at home alone and no one looks after him when I'm gone...
