Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. As I was going through the security line in the airport, I was wondering if other people brought their dolls on trips - on planes, trains, boats, or automobiles.

I for one am a serial traveler, so most of my dolls have been on either a plane, a train, or in the car with me (not on a boat yet, though!). So I was wondering...

      1. Do you travel with your dolls?
      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?

I'll go first, to kick it off. :3

      1. Do you travel with your dolls?
Yes! I've traveled cross-country, to Japan, and elsewhere. :p

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
During the security check in a Texas airport, the security didn't have a lot of people going through the line, so it was pretty slow. When I put my dolls on the x-ray, the security guard's eyes widened and he called other people to come over and look - they were chuckling, so I asked them what was going on. Apparently my dolls had shifted in the bag so they looked like they were "spooning" each other. XD

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Make sure all your dolls can fit in a carry-on size luggage, and wait until everyone has put their luggage in the overhead compartment until you place your dolls in front of them, or in a free space. Crushed dolls are no good. :X Also, I upgraded from a duffel-bag sized doll bag to a small rolling suitcase, and that has made a TON of difference in traveling in airports! They're so much easier to travel with now. :)

    2. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
yes i travel with them, i usually take the train.
      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
the train was very late and i ran to the next one, i got there and realized that i had left zoya ion the other train... needless to say i made a mad dash over and arrived just in time to get her back!!
      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
i would love to travel to maybe italy or japan
      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
hmm..make sure you have a traveling case that protects your dolls well, and is small enough to keep buy your side

    3. There are a few threads on this already. They will most likely be a few pages back... To answer your questions~

      1. Do you travel with your dolls?

Once, it was overseas to visit my friends who were also doll lovers. Since Aine is a hefty 65cm, she's on the line of cumbersome to travel with

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?

A few airport security were suspicious she was drugs! I had to take her out of her bag multiple times. I loved their facial expressions!

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?

      PADDING

      Enough said!

    4. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
      yes on a plane once.

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
there was an empty seat on the plane beside me so i took her out of my bag and let her sit there i think i even put the seat-belts on her, good thing they didn't get that suspicious.

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
a good doll carrier to protect the doll itself.

    5. I travel back and forth from home to college for the big breaks between semesters - and since I'd rather not go a month without my girl, I definitely take her with me. So far she's gone from Montana to Texas and back via plane, Houston to Dallas and back via car, and Houston to San Antonio and back via car.

Nothing weird's really happened yet...but once at the airport in Missoula I had the security guard pull my doll bag out of the scanner early for me. He saw what was in it on the screen, somehow recognized the value, and yoinked it out so it wouldn't get smushed by any other bags coming through on the line. That was nice of him!

As for tips, ditto kawaiisakura92. Paaaddiiiiiiinnnngggg. I have layers of foam around my girl in her doll bag, and frequently fleece as well. And I take her carry-on so I know I can keep track of her! I can't even imagine trying to put her in checked luggage. DDD8

Oh, and keep close track of the doll bag, too! Apparently, mine can easily be mistaken for an instrument bag - a couple people have seen it and asked what I play - so that makes it a target for airport bag thieves.

    6. I wanted to bring some of my dolls to Switzerland to visit my Daughter, but I was afraid that something would happen to them. I didn't think about putting them in my carry-on. That is a very good idea.

And she is very creeped out by the dolls, so that is the other reason I didn't bring any of them. Maybe next time.

    7. Ahh, this thread helps so much actually.

When I get my girls and single guy I am bringing all four on a plane with me to Florida for an Anime Festival at the end of the year and I had no idea what to do...

Carry-ons with lots of padding >_< Great help.

      My friend did that once and her carry on got thrown around in the overhead thing with turbulance but she was lucky nothing broke -_-;

    8. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
yup, lets see, UK europe, US [LA, Paducah], Japan [and we'r going again.... ]
      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
haha none so far, most airports like like oh ok.....
      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
      hrm alaska XD
      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
make u get something with wheels XD

    9. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
Yes I do. In the Car and the airplane so far.
      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
Her hands kept falling off. D:
      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
      On train.
      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Don't let the little kids see it, and don't talk to it/cling for comfort. It tends to freak people out. :D

    10. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?

Yep, when ever I can! ^^

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?

There was an empty seat next to me... so I put my doll there... This flight attendant saw it and paused, raised an eyebrow, looked at me, (I thought there was nothing strange about it!) and said: This is a doll? I answered yes. She askes: Aren't you a little old to be playing with dolls?
I just started giggling. It's really not that funny, but there are so many doll collecters that are older than me! (I'm 15)

      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
      Anywhere!
      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?

Padding.... lots and lots of padding..... >>

    11. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?

Not yet, but I would like to sometime. The farthest any of them have been is the playground near my house for an abortive photoshoot.

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?

      Not applicable, see above. :)

      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?

Anywhere, starting with the landmarks close to where I live, like Hoover Dam.

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?

Being as I actually work on the airport security line, people with dolls are the last thing any of us should be worried about. Seriously, do not stress about the x-ray or anything else. Doll people pale in comparison to the nutters who bring: bird cages (bird included), air rifles, loaded handguns, propane torches, cabin-approved pet kennels dripping with dog feces, broadswords, carry-ons full of nothing but sex toys and porn magazines, dead bobcats, and exploding golfballs.

For the record, I have seen and dealt with all of the above. However, do remember that those nutters are your fellow passengers. There is a reason I loathe air travel even more than I used to: I get to see what people bring on the plane. You, however, are traveling at your own risk and gods help you if your fellow passenger places a bag filled with three 18-pound bowling balls next to your doll carry-on in the overhead bin.

    12. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
I travel on planes, trains and automobiles

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
I had just gotten my Volks Elena, Minami, in California and she was coming back with me and I had her out. This lady looks at me, at her, then back at me and says "Oh is that a doll thats supposed to look like you?" I replied no. She said "Oh well she does, and you're both adorable!" I just smiled and went back to sitting there hating my plane ride as always.

      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
      N/A

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Keep them on the plane with you. Dont put them in the under the plane baggage and make sure they're in something that wont crush!!!

    13. I have a question...
With all the s-hooks, are they okay being carried on planes? I know some airlines can get really funny about anything remotely like that.

    14. Yup! I was really close to asking to see the x-ray of my dolls, but if I recall correctly, they basically look like tiny human forms with the hooks highlighted as metal. S-hooks aren't blades and don't have sharp points (according to the personnel on the security line), so they're fine. C: It's like putting anything that has metal in it through the x-ray, like a DS or a laptop.

    15. Ah, okay brilliant! Thank you so much. I wasn't sure if it would be okay but now I'm super happy~ means my dolls will get to travel with me next time I go somewhere.

    16. The boys will have to travel with me to Germany sometime next year when I finish my Au Pair year if I want to or not .. And at the moment I'd rather not. I have too much stuff already anyway and two not particularly light dolls don't make it any easier :sweat
Aaand since I'll be on a plane from the US (ooh shopping tourist alarm) I'm kinda worried. Maybe for no reason but german customs aren't very nice, so :XD: .. I have no idea what to expect at the airport. Ha.

    17. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
Twice so far. Once was on a fairly short train ride, the other cross-country to California :)

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
Nothing, actually, both trips were kind of boring. I would've liked to see them on the x-ray in the airport, but that didn't happen.

      3. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?

Trains usually have some fashion of room, so it's easier to find a place nearby. [I just laid the carrier on the floor and kept it between my feet the whole way] As far as planes are concerned, if you can, stick the carrier under the seat in front of you. I wouldn't ever stick a carrier up in the overhead without a damn good reason. Also, as far as padding goes, I always put a spare set of clothes in my carryon in case something happens to my main bag, and tuck them carefully around the dolls. Managed to cart a laptop and three dolls back to Florida that way, all of them in the carrier.

    18. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
Yes :3 I've traveled several times with my dolls by plane.

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
On one trip flying home to see family from Illinois to Minnesota, I took my big boy with me in a modified violin case/carrier. The guy at the security line looked at the case in the x-ray machine and exclaimed "Hey! That's not a violin!" - he had the funniest look on his face.

      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
      N/A

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Use a relatively strong bag/suitcase when traveling that has stable sides so that its not so easy to crush. ^^

    19. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?

tried it once..will not do it often. I took him to the beach and basically did nothing with him as he sat on my hot bed. I feel so bad because I could only cuddle with him as I slept in the tent. urg!!

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
the way his hair poked out because he was still cramped in my bag. I would have been quite embarrassed if his head cap fell. I wish he was small at times, so I could take him everywhere with me...Y ^ Y

      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Be wary that people will stare, and may think that you are weird. Be very generous in making sure that they are 'safe' in your baggage and/or purse.

    20. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
      Yes, to Taiwan and Vietnam

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
My friend thought i was crazy taking their pictures everywhere......oh and almost lost their face covers (because of busy taking their pictures and then i just ran to another place for more pictures.....later on i found out i don't have the face covers so i ran back to the place and i'm glad it still there...haha)

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Not sure since my dolls are tiny and yosd sizes so they went through the x-ray easily....i put them all in my bag. This Christmas i will be flying with my MSD for the first time though, i hope everything will go smoothly ^^

is it ok to bring a lot of dolls at one time?
