Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
Sometimes. I don't like to take them with me unless I have a specific reason to bring them. For example, I took my boys to San Diego Comic Con because they had a tutorial/meet panel
      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
      I haven't had any really.
      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Take a carrying case with you when you fly. And take them with you on the plane, that way you avoid potential catastrophes. The security will look at it weird while running it through the x-ray machine but other than that they don't care.

    2. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
Yes. I went to Japan this past summer, so I just had to take a doll or two with me. I took my RS Mei and my Puki.

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
Well, I was in the airport before I left for Japan. I was walking to get money exchanged and this girl was sitting on the side of the way. She pulled out a doll and started drawing. I was like O.O Doll! So We ended up talking about dolls for an hour or two, and I don't even know her name :(

      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
I only took two dolls with me to Japan, but I plan to take all six or seven with me this winter when I travel a significantly shorter distance.

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Keep them with you. Don't check your doll onto a plane. Don't wave them out the window. Ever. I feel like trains are easier to deal with. Don't forget them...that's bad. I've never traveled by boat, but I would assume that you don't want to get them wet.

    3. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
Yep!This is the 8th time I went to Japan and for 6 times out of the 8, I always brought my tiny with me.

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
Whenever I go traveling or hiking, my main purpose is to do landscape and nature photography. A couple of times, I brought my tiny with me and I ended up taking more pictures of him compared to the scenery around me. My friends also took turns taking pictures of themselves with my doll.

      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
I want to bring them to Kyoto or Hokkaido during spring and winter seasons.

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Put your doll on a hard-cased bag with the inside cushioned by foams. Traveling with dolls is really fun but the downside is you're being incapacitated because you tend to look over your doll's well-being than yourself. So, if you have a lot of time to spare then bring your doll with you. However, if you expect yourself to be busy, then don't.

    4. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?

Yep, back and forth from home to college every break on the plane or in the car.

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?

Airport security is always fun. :XD: Once the guy x-ray my MSD's doll carrier, frowned, moved the belt backwards to look at it again, frowned some more, took the bag out and re-put it on the moving belt and scowled. A female security co-worker walked over to see what the hold up was all about, stuck her head beside his to view the screen, then promptly laughed at him. He glared at her and let my doll carrier through.

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?

Keep your dolls on you, close to you. I watch them chuck around the luggage that is checked in like baseball and shudder.

    5. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?yes several times a year. they go on vaction with me, and to anime conventions.

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling? being stopped at lax cause my dz 70cm came up on the scan as a liquid O.o or in cincinatti and the secruity was like you have a wee little person in your bag. and i said yes. and they asked if they could see the leoprcon. also on the cruise ship in tahati. everyone on the ship knew me as the doll girl. :| cause i'd take pictures around the ship or on the outings. and everyone was talking about me. "oh so your the doll girl" got a little old after a while. though on the pool deck when i was taking pictures a family screamed across the freak as loud as they could at me.

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.? at the airport have the dolls packed in a way that's easily undone, that the secruity won't break them pulling them out or man handling them. also always carry on.

on ships. plastic bags are your best freind or waterproofed bags. (it rains alot on islands) velcroing wigs is also a very good idea cause the wind on a ship even in port is pretty strong.

    6. 1. Do you travel with your dolls? Yes all the time.

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
I'm always amused by the x-ray scanner's reaction as a bag of dolls goes through, as they do scan so weird.

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
If you must pack your dolls in your checked luggage, take the head off and keep it in your carry on bag. The head is the most unique part which you don't want to lose or have damaged.

    7. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?

Yup, my dolls come with me on planes relatively frequently.

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?

I don't have any really unusual stories, to be honest. Usually when I put the bag on the x-ray belt, I warn the security staff that there are dolls in there (I got into the habit of warning them when I was actually taking a sewing machine with me... luckily I don't have to do THAT too often :sweat) and then I'd get an occasional look at me, then the screen, then back at me with a "BIG dolls" comment.

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?

I usually put my dolls into a small rolling suitcase these days with lots of padding; one important thing is to make sure they can't shift around much, because that's usually when the most damage happens. I also wrap up fragile parts like their hands in extra bubblewrap. However, as I learned the hard way on my last plane trip, be aware of what size plane you're going to be flying on whenever possible - the smaller jets don't have big enough overhead bins for suitcases like those. I had to put my bag on the jetway cart, and while they're supposed to give your bag back to you on the jetway at the destination, mine somehow got routed into the checked baggage machinery instead... which is how my Kalix wound up with a broken finger despite the bubblewrap. :| (He's almost good as new now though, a friend fixed him for me. :)) I was pretty panicked when they couldn't find my bag, so I'd definitely recommend checking what kind of plane you're going to be on beforehand and maybe bringing a different doll and/or case for them that would still fit in a smaller size overhead bin. Just in case...

    8. I've only ever traveled with my dolls once. I took my girls to Comic-Con in San Diego last July. They ended up spending most of the time at the hotel so no real interesting stories or weird experiences. I can say that I was definitely paranoid about traveling with them though and wrapped them in layer after layer of protective blankets. I don't think I could ever travel with them on a plane though. I'd be too worried about them getting damaged.

    9. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
      I did once.

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
I had to travel with the doll in my lap on the plane, I got weird looks and I felt super embarrassed. I didn't want to put her in a bag because I was too afraid of her getting broken.

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Next time I think I will use one of the doll cases, the seem to be the most sturdy.

    10. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?

Yes, they often go with me on weekend trips, definitely on longer ones.

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?

Nagi went with me on the school's International Club trip to Europe last spring. I HAD to get a shot of him at Pisa, 'holding up' the tower. In Florence some of the girls saw those mini souvenir t-shirts... and HAD to buy one for him. ^___^ Most of the time he stayed back at the hotel (didn't want to risk him in crowds), but I did get good pictures of him in a few places.

      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?

I have a doll bag for them now, but for Europe I didn't. Nagi rode in my carry-on messenger bag. Even in the doll carrier, I wrap each doll in white fabric, so they won't rub against the bag or each other (or shoes) and pick up stains. I also got some face protectors.

    11. I tavel with my dolls all the time :)

I had to fit my big doll in my caryon so he was siting there with no head and my msd was fited in to one of the arms of my Walolita dress. I looked like a xams tree XD

I did get them thrue custums and my bigg doll is 64cm so it's okej to fly with them :)

    12. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
      Yep did last Christmas
      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
When my bad went through the screening area the lady watching the monitor had a very odd expression called a few other people doing the TSA thing over to look. After a minute or so I called back that they were looking at a doll... Apparently seeing a body in my bad scared them lol They didn't know what to think of it, they thought it was a mini skeleton. One of them said the big boobs (Super Gem girl) kinda threw her off and she wasn't sure what it was.
      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Make sure you have some padding around them, just in case (since even on your carry on you gotta put it beneath the seat in front of you for takeoff and landing) and something for the face is always good (gotta protect the faceups!!)

    13. Ha, I want to bring my doll to Europe with me thisChirstmas, I wonder what the reaction in Sydney airport will be like when they see the x-ray...
But this thread is really useful, thanks for all the tips!

    14. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
Not yet.I'm not very fond of travel. But if have chance, I will take them along.
      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?

      Anywhere,
      Tokyo ,
If it must be the election of a place, then
      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
To protect their good, maybe.a durable box.

    15. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?

I have. I took three to a doll meet in Montreal, and just one with me to Chicago and Michigan. They've also been on trips to other cities accessible by regional transit (trains and buses).

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?

When I left Chicago, I really had to contort Asher up in my backpack to get him inside. While going through Midway airport security, the customs guy got really freaked out when he opened the bag to look at that 'weird-shaped thing'. I don't think he was expecting to see a doll looking back at him, especially not one with yellow eyes. I've never seen a bag re-zipped so fast in my life

      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
I really would like to take them with me on my trips to Asia, but it's too far and normally I start off with a suitcase 1/3 full and a 1/4 full backpack and come back with all my bags ready to explode and straddling the maximum weight capacity within a couple pounds (someone tell me to stop buying books in a language I can't even really read >.<) Even one doll would just be extra weight and space that I don't need or want to lug around.

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Try to take them in your carry-on, if you can. I have known people who have checked them with great care and had things turn out fine, but I personally wouldn't do it. Make sure you wrap them up well with padding and use their face protectors. If you can get your bag under the seat in front of you in the plane, do so. I wouldn't risk putting it in the overhead with everyone else's stuff. I also feel much safer leaving them in the bag while traveling so they won't lose any wigs/clothes/accessories in the vehicle or airport/terminal.

    16. iv not taveled with mine but i will in december not sure i wanna take him scared they will take him off me at airport so im glad i found this thread

    17. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
Yes I take one with me whenever I'm going to be away from home for a few nights. It's a great chance to get some photos somewhere new.
      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
When I was on the plane with Seath the woman sitting next to me had a daughter who collected BJDs as well~ So she was very understanding and showed me photos of her girls dolls!
      3. If not, where would you like to travel with your dolls?
Hmm not sure, I like going everywhere.
      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.
For planes, take it in your hand luggage. You get some incredibly amused security officers when it goes through the scanners.

Here's my boy on a plane earlier this year, sorry about the photo it was taken on my phone.

    18. 1. Do you travel with your dolls?
Yes, they've been on planes, and on long car trips.

      2. If so, what was the funniest/weirdest experience you've had with them traveling?
The looks on the faces of the other travelers when I pull my dolls out of my bag and sit them on my lap. And the looks on the faces of security.

      4. Do you have any tips for traveling on planes/trains/boats/etc.?
Pack them carefully, and if you have to put them in your luggage put the head in your carryon. And don't leave any baggage unattended.

    19. i have not traveled but iam planning to by december will go to mexico by car ahh its going to be a long way luckily hes a yosd size so hes going to be going in seat with my son

    20. Cute! :D

Oh, something to mention (because I've had this happen to me before), when you fly on small planes, sometimes there won't be enough carryon space above your head to fit your dolls so you can either a) put them in the valet (which I really don't like doing, because I don't really know where my dolls will end up) or b) put them underneath the seat.

If you do have SD13's, you can cover them with a blanket, or get a window seat, because flight attendants will come by to see that nothing is poking out from underneath the seat in front of you. I'd definitely recommend a window seat, because I'm all for easy evacuation and free floorspace, but if you really don't feel comfortable leaving your dolls out for the valet on small flights, you might just want to put them under the seat/sit with them in your lap.
