Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. Better to error on the side of caution and leave him at home, if you're concerned about security. I didn't even leave Erik's head in the hotel room alone on my recent trip, and I wouldn't have left an entire doll there either.

    2. I'm of the opinion that unless you had a untrustworthy friend who knew how much these dolls cost that may be in your hotel room while your out, I doubt your doll will get stolen.

I've taken plain toys on vacation before and they never get touched if left in the room. If you worry when you go out and have to leave your doll, leave them in a suitcase in the closet or in a draw. I highly doubt that anyone will mess with your doll, not knowing the value and not bothering to care about someone's toy.

      My 2cents. :daisy

    3. If it's just on a trip and you're not going to a doll meetup of sorts, I wouldn't bring a doll. I'm the type who would leave my doll in the hotel room, then start worrying if he was okay the whole time I was out. I'd rather just not bring him and not have to worry, when I know he'd be safe at home.

I'm going to Japan for a month and even though I will miss Jaede, I know he'll be safe right where I leave him at home.

    4. Hiya

if you are staying in main stream hotels in the UK.. your dolls will be fine.. I travel around and often leave my dolls in hotel rooms.. and they never get touched.. so please dont worry...

where areyou going in the UK...

      :daisy

    5. If you leave the doll out in the open, on a bed, there's even a higher chance that nobody will swipe it, than if you left it in the bag having it look like someone's camera or something.. who wants the guilt of stealing a child's 'toy'? When some guys broke into my house through my room, they didn't touch a single thing in my room and headed directly for the jewelry and TVs, and I had a ton of rare figurines right in the open. @_@

    6. I was also thinking of that, when left in the open a BJD looks more like a toy, and less valuable. My house got broken into a long while back and of course all the thives go for is the T.V., VCR ect, and tend to ingore my moms statues. Which is a good thing since they are worth quite a bit.

    7. hmmmn... hard question. you have to go with your gut on this one. personally, ten days... hmmn. i'd definitely get a bag and carry my girls everywhere. if i needed to leave her in the hotel room, i'd be scared, but i'd err on the side of caution... i'd always leave the "do not disturb" sign on there. then nobody would probably go in there, anyway (i'd hope).

    8. First, how big is your kid? Mini's travel well curled up in mini backpacks, (I've notived! ^_^) And anything smaller could fit in a decent sized purse. I wouldn't reccomend traveling with a standard, just because of the size and the weight. Like everyone says, a "toy" is less likely to be swiped from a hotel room, but do you really want to be lugging 5lbs of doll around for 10 days? I'd worry more about him getting banged up than about him being stolen.

      My 2 cents

Mini or smaller, take him, bring him a nice towel to wrap him in and invest in a cute back pack to carry him around with you, and a no fuss wig for him to wear while in it. No need to worry about someone stealing the doll if he's with you when you are out, right? Plus, the photo ops!

Standard or bigger (!!!) Leave him at home, he'll be much safer, and you'll be less worried about leaving him in the hotel room. They are harder to carry around than a smaller doll. Bring him a souvenier though! ^_^

    9. I've traveled with my dolls, left them in hotel rooms, and, while you can't help but worry a little, nothing bad ever happened to them.

(One maid thought they were my daughter's, and tucked them in for the night when she turned down the bed. ^_^ )

You have to do what you think best, though.

    10. That is so cute XD They did that with a bear I had once.

But yeah, if a person DOES break into your room in that rare, rare circumstance, I'm sure they're going to go right for any jewelry or money or electronic equipment. Nobody wants to lug around some 5-6 pound doll. :P So be lucky the hobby is still a bit niche, and not many know of their value.

    11. Janne, that is adorable! random anecdote- when I went to Paris Last summer(A year ago today I arrived home), I brought my plush tiger with me- and when I came back, my tiger was always sitting on my pillows all arranged. xD

I'm kinda playing the fence here. When I went to Florida over Spring Break, I missed my girl desperately, and even though I trusted the girls in my room, I did NOT trust the other people there...during the week, someone broke into one of the other dorm rooms and stole a TV... they found the kid with it in his room watching it! (DUH!) So I was then VERY grateful that I didn't bring her.

BUT I was with a group of 200 or so wild, unpredicable High Schoolers in a Church Dorm-style camp. Soo... A Hotel is prolly 10x safer. :3

If it's a Mini, I'd say get a big tote bag and take them with you.

BUT... I honestly don't think if it's a nice hotel in a nice area, anyone would steal your dolly... I mean, they'd go for money and stuff first...

    12. I've taken Fox on a number of trips, & she's never been bothered when left alone in the hotel room. If you're worried about the housekeeping staff, just keep the "do not disturb" sign up for your entire stay... you can always accost a maid in the hall for more towels/toilet paper/whatever, or ring the front desk for it.

      I rarely let housekeeping in the room while I'm still staying in it... I'm weird about people rearranging My Stuff, & I sometimes travel w/ animals that aren't really allowed in most hotels. ;}

    13. I spent 2 weeks in Japan and brought Gabriel with me. While he didn't get bothered anywhere I left him (I was worried a lot, especially at one youth hostel that had me sharing a room with 5 other people, but nothing happened), it did get tiring to carry him around all the time... and his faceup got rather scratched and he got FILTHY from all the traveling...

The thing about leaving the dolls in the hotel room, is that chances are, most people will think that the dolls cost about $25 or $30 at the most, so they wouldn't think of them as something valuable and will probably leave them alone.

    14. Thank you very much to everyone! I really appreciate the input - it definitely gave me something to think about. All in all, I think I'm going to bring him along, so we'll see how that goes.

    15. I'm going on hoilday in 2 weeks time, and I want take my doll with me, but I'm not quite so sure which way should I carry my doll in.
There is one put in the suitcase, OR the other is to crarry it in my backpack.
I don't know which is better, so please help me out?
      Thanks

    16. how are you travelling? on plane, car, train? If it was me though i would always have the doll in a bag near me. When take my kids out they are always close enough to me so i can keep an eye on them. If it is by car thoughand im taking all of them i'll stick them in a cushioned bag and put them in the trunk or backseat until we get to our destination.

    17. Yes it really does depend on the method of travel. By plane, I'd say put them in your carry on.

    18. I went on a roadtrip through Oregon and Idaho recently, and my two boys were lovingly and caringly stuffed into a backpack. 8D

I used towels and Glanconer's nice '80's reminiscent pillows as a cushion, and there was still room for all my other crap. (like books and pencils and sketch shtuff)

    19. Backpacks are easy to carry them around in and it serves for a multitude of other things. My dolls are almost always in a backpack unless I decide I want to put them in a proper bag (they share Ryuen's DoD bag)

    20. Umm I forgot to mention out that I'm taveling in a airplane,
Thanks alot with the replayes I have, it really help me alot now. I will be keeping my doll close to me now in the plane. It is a long haul flight taveling the other half of the world.
It is much better to do this, so I know it's with me (so I don't need to worry alot) and being safe hands with me. ^0^

I say it once and I say it again THANKS ALOT with the replyes
