Travelling with your dolls: issues/ideas/etc. Part I

Aug 20, 2004

    1. Yeah! It totally depends on the vacation, and yourself, and your companions. If you're packing light because you're changing locations/ crossing borders a lot, you might want to skip it. Or bring a small doll. St. James, Idrisfynn & I each brought an MSD-sized doll to Japan, where we took public transit every day & changed hotels/cities frequently, and even schlepped up to mountain shrines, with our dolls in our day-bags... and it was all great fun, with unforgettable photos... but I can safely say I wouldn't want to do that kind of intense travel with any doll bigger than 45cm!

But, if you're on a leisurely trip, where you can pack as much as you want & will have a home base for awhile, bringing a larger doll can be more practical. I brought my 68cm Limhwa Mano to Santa Cruz with me, because I was being driven there, staying at a fancy beachside hotel, & had no travel-companions or itinerary that'd complicate things. I brought his carrying-case, several outfits for him, my tripod, everything needed to have a safe yet awesome doll-photo-taking-vacation. ^^

And whatever kind of trip you're on, always keep security in mind.

    2. I've taken dolls on vacation before, to Hawaii. I took a DD and an MDD in the top half of my hard sided carryon. It was a fairly busy trip but I still had opportunity to take them out in three different places for pictures. When they couldn't go with me (like on a bus tour) I left them in the hotel room locked in my carryon. I had no issues with the arrangement and plan to do it again later.

    3. It's not bad to have dolls join you for a trip~ I know I always take at least one with me :3 just make sure to keep them safe and keep them close, you don't want them damaged or even worse stolen...

    4. Oh, good topic. I'm glad I found it, as I'm going all the way to New York in December.

I figure it's probably easier to take a yosd or tiny on a trip, but I don't think that should stop someone from bringing a larger doll ^-^
I have a LittleFee I want to bring with me, and I'm not sure what the safest way to travel with her is.

    5. I actually have a problem sleeping if I don't have a doll near me. So I usually bring at least one on vacation. If we are driving, maybe two but no more than that. Don't want to have too many things to lose track of. Most of the time they never leave the hotel or summer rental we are staying at. Rather hard to go sightseeing with an SD.

    6. The last time that I actually went traveling was over 2 years ago, when I have yet to own any dolls. If I have a chance, I would like to bring my dolls when I go traveling.

    7. I do it all the time. My Yo-Tenshi and my SwD Nana are rarely left behind. Just make sure you take reasonable precautions and if you are flying NEVER check the dolls, always carry them on.

    8. I don't actually have a doll yet, but we go on vacation to amusement parks, and I wouldn't be taking anything as expensive and potentially fragile as a resin doll along for any reason. Too much potential for loss, theft, or damage in my opinion.

    9. i take 1 or 2 of mine when going away for weekends and such, mainy because when i get time off i like to do things with them like swap clothes/eyes or take photos, generally i prefer to take my DD's they tend to be more resiliant to being hauled around in a bag all the time and just avoid the risk of any of my resins getting damaged/stolen or lost, because my DD's are not customs they are cheaper to replace.

plus...i have been known to snuggle more on holidays :D

    10. I got married in Vegas and took my pukipuki with me. I was actually afraid there'd be nothing to do so I wanted to have something that would preoccupy my time if I got bored. Well, she ended up being carried around in my purse the whole time where her hair got slightly matted and her faceup got scratched in several places. She was glad to get back home and doesn't want to go to Vegas again, she says it IS boring.

I don't believe it's necessary to take a doll on vacation if you plan to do virtually anything at all. First of all, I'm not the type that likes drawing attention to myself so even when I could've taken her out I didn't. You are very compelled to babysit your doll. I was more nervous about losing her than anything! That responsibility can inhibit your fun time.

So, if you're not the type to have it make you a nervous wreck (like I am) then definitely take your doll and make the vacation about the doll.
I got fat, so I thought I'd use the doll as my photo subject. It just really didn't work out the way I'd planned.

    11. I am considering taking my girl to washington this summer. she is a MSD so she should fit nicely...I hope I get some funny looks XD

    12. I always bring my Doll Family to my anime conventions, I go to 4 anime conventions a year. The worst thing that happens is people will try to touch them, but I tell them they can't and usually they understand. I haven't had anyone get mad.
I'm about to go on Vacation this summer with my boyfriend's family and I want to bring my Dolls but I'm not sure how that will go since we're going to many places I'm not sure if we're staying at just one hotel, and I'd hate to end up having to leave them in the car or something, that would be awful O_O Well, because they can't go swimming with me haha

    13. lol
I was wondering the same thing. I would love to bring one of my dolls with me on vacations, but I'm always afraid of TSA >.<" I mean, it should be ok to bring a doll aboard, but I think I would be so embarrassed when they ask me to open my bag.

    14. For me it depends on what all I'm going to be doing. I love going to conventions, so obviously in those cases I'll be bringing a doll or two with me. But as for weekends visiting the fam or something (I have a sister who lives about 4 hours away) I tend to leave them home because she loves to go out and do things, and I know chances are I won't get enough time to go out and take pics. I haven't flown anywhere in forever, but I probably would take one along with me if I were going somewhere for a week or two. ^^

    15. I would only bring my dolls if I was going to a convention or another doll related matter. I think I would be too paranoid to leave my dolls in my luggage especially if I was taking a plane. Maybe I would consider just bringing one and carrying it on the plane but other than that I wouldn't.

    16. I’d say it’s no problem so long as you are careful. For me personally, the best way is to carry them yourself, but if you don’t have this option, put them in their box and have them carefully padded. We’ve taken our dolls to Chicago, North Carolina, and I’ve brought them to my university in Saint Louis before.

    17. This is one of these things that I really want to do, but know that I shouldn't. >.< Knowing me, I'd drop it off a bridge or something horrible.

    18. I carried my doll on the plane with when I was go on vacation to El Slavador. I was scared at first, I thought that they wouldn't let me take him but they didn't say anything in customs and let me go right through. :)

    19. I always try to bring my favorite doll with me while traveling because if I do otherwise I know i'll miss her way too much! I'd only ever bring the doll as a carry on though, I'd be too paranoid to put her on the plane as extra baggage, they don't handle those bags very gently!

    20. I would be afraid to lose them! maybe on short trips but on long trips or over seas no way! I have lots many things before, and i would not want to be missing such an expensive dolly!
