Trouble Doll/Problem Child (the menace of the bunch!)

May 18, 2014

    1. Eden (Momocolor Michelle) was supposed to be an ice elf ballerina kind of thing. I had planned for a special face-up, but surprise surprise, Momocolor send her with a default face-up. Their defaults are really pretty, so I just couldn't force myself to wipe it. Somehow I kinda forgot that single jointed dolls still exist, even if their torso is double jointed. So Eden couldn't do ballet poses for the life of her. I had ordered Magic Time transparant wings for her, to help with the ice elf look, but the resin was way too thick and the torso hole too small to make magnet holes. So I glued the magnets to her back, but of course, wrongfully. Her torso spend some time in the freezer and the magnets came of, but there is still superglue residue and possibly some scratches (now covered by her back tattoo). I decided to order spare magnets to help the wings to stay on, with the magnets on the inside, but I ordered super tiny ones by accident (I'm horrible at envisioning sizes). I still haven't settled on a wig and she insist on wearing her ballet clothes, despite not being able to pose like a ballerina. She was also supposed to be a sweet character, but she has a bit of smirk going on, making her vibe darker. I have considered selling her, but I can't. She is too darn beautiful.

Now I have a pair of wings with no owner. Eden's character switched to a ghost girl of a crippled ex-ballet dancer who teaches aspiring ballerina's to dance with an iron fist, a bit phantom of the opera like. :p

    2. It would have to be my Latidoll Largo. He came with a destroyed box, broken ear, and I just discovered that sealant is chipping off :( I've only had him for roughly a year. He's a beautiful sculpt, but we definitely have a love-hate relationship going on.

    3. my god were to start with my problem child.
first of he got stopped at costums so I had to pay extra for him. Restringing him is just a pain in the butt. He regulry kick or headbutts me even after restringing him. His groin area is often stained even after soaking all of his clothes in vinigair. Recently I also found little scratches in that area too from the metal button on his pants. And after all that trouble believe it or not he is my favourite.

    4. lol... i know your pain. I have a few nightmare dolls that really get on my nerves, but the most problematic is Hayaki. He was my 3rd doll. I say was because I changed him so many times. He started as a migidoll miho and went through 3 bodies (old luts SDF, then souldoll, then crobidoll) before i decided it wasn't working with that head (that was back in 2008). I changed him for a Luts Frey with the new luts body and I thought it would work... but then I didn't like the SDF body, so I changed for again for a Infiniti Doll. He stayed like that for a while until I was tired with the luts... it wasnt working >.< .... i changed him for a Switch Taeheo on the Infiniti doll body... but It was wrong for proportion, so I sold that and bought a Distant Memory body... no. Then a Volks SD17, which I liked but I needed money so I sold it. I bought an April Story.... no! Urgh...

Now I have Hayaki as a Taeheo on a Soom SuperGen 2nd body. I like it for now.

Funny thing is that his wig has never changed from day one lol... still the same one since 2008

    5. I have a very.... oddly specific problem child. My boy Damian is apparently very picky when it comes to who he misbehaves for. I had him shipped to a friend's for pick up and apparently he "bit" her with his joints several times and would adjust into the weirdest poses. When I got him home with me and snuggle him, he's perfectly fine. I must admit however, he's incredibly picky about his wigs and it's been a chore finding one for him. I finally had one custom made (fur) but an Esty (Echo Wigs) artist. I've seen her post on DoA in the store section and I really recommend her work! It's very soft and floofy and FINALLY fits like a dream. Seriously, it's been the only wig he doesn't throw off. (I thought for a while he'd have to go bald--oddly enough, he seemed to pull the look off.) Anyway, while he was visiting Tip, apparently he was an absolute pill to deal with! It was nuts! So much so she's pretty much told me she doesn't want to deal with him--unless I'm there. So... Damian never fails to entertain me, even if he is a problem child. :)

    6. Sonia's a Princess and partly Fae, so she can be a pistol. When she's sulky, she'll go bald (her wig will shift) and her posture goes to pieces. Right now, she's in a snit, because her dress is stained and I haven't been in a state to clean it. But I found her a correctly sized roll of duct tape and, she's amused enough that she may stop pouting.

    7. Haha I have a real problem child in my CP El...I know mostly everyone who has one of the older ones found their posing to be ridiculously hard. I can't get him to move his arms, he hasn't been able to stand on his own for years! And I swear one of his legs is longer than the other! I keep trying to find ways to help him, but his character was always supposed to be a little frail so I'm not too bothered by it, he can be my fainting prince
One day I will wire him but I doubt even that will help (I'm looking into stands now haha!)

    8. Mine is an 70cm named Maxwell aka "Goddamn it, Maxwell."

Bought him from Angelsdoll during their last sale before they stopped making dolls. I was so excited. He was my first really big doll and the first doll I had purchased with a special skin tone. The wait wasn't bad and I was over the moon when he got here but after that brief honeymoon things have gone down hill.

First of all he can't stand very well. He's got the ridiculously tiny feet and the worst belly pop I have ever dealt with. Standing for him is gently leaning him against an object and hoping for the best. I've sueded and re-strung him and that is the best he can do. It was during one of these re-stringing sessions I discovered that his knees were cracking. Tiny little stress cracks. I tried contacting Angelsdoll about it as it was only a few months after they sent him but I never got a response. I ended up patching them up myself and loosening strings which of course makes it difficult to get him to stand. :|

And finally that wonderful skin tone I had special ordered has started to change. I am pretty careful with my dolls. I keep them in an area that doesn't get much sunlight and such but apparently the overhead light was too much for Maxwell. Any part of him that wasn't covered has faded to a weird grey color. So his hands, neck and part of his face are noticeably different. So annoyed by this the most. I paid extra for the lovely tan and this is what happens.

His only saving grace is that I really love the character and the face sculpt. Also in a strange way his color change and inability to stand makes sense for the character. Max is supposed to be an undead, similar to a New England vampire so it fits.

    9. That would be my very first doll, a DoC Kirill. There's pretty much nothing about his looks that really appeal to me anymore, and I've tried just about everything from a complete make-over to new face-ups to actual modification to try to bring back that spark. But nope, I got nothing. Yet I can't bring myself to sell him, not only because he was my first doll and will always be special, but because given what an old sculpt he is and all the work he's had done, I hardly see him fetching anything that's worth the trouble. So for now he sits on the shelf, unnamed and not really doing much. But at least he has everything he needs to be 'complete'-face-up, wig, eyes, outfit, shoes...so even if I never really do anything more with him, at least he can sit there as a pleasant reminder of where it all began.

    10. ROFL, Saaya-chan! I thought I had it bad!

Shirelae, it's hilarious that your girl insisted on being a ballerina, no matter what!

CloakedSchemer, it could be worse, at least Mike is the perfect head! (I considered buying that sculpt once, I really like it.)

VampireAngel13, it sounds like you have the ultimate success story with David. Sometimes I don't know why we screw around wasting time, when we should just get the right BJD body to start with. I am off to read your adventures with your Kara Klum, though!

jacobean, I was saying to a friend just the other day that I want my BJDs to look like they enjoy living with me. I definitely wouldn't want to feel like one outright hates me, so I hope your girl likes you too! Even my grouchy sociopath and I have moments where he puts up with me.

Lulu, POOR YOU!! You deserve some kind of prize, it's a good thing you love him to bits!

I am really glad to read this thread, because I don't feel so lonely about having a "problem child"! Looks like lots of people have the same issues I do.

Demetrius (my ElfDoll Red), is my problem guy. First of all, I bought him from Dolls and Friends in 2007, he was a last minute choice. I had originally put ElfDoll June on layaway, but at the end of the timeframe I chickened out on getting her. I transferred my paid money to Red, because I had a new character in mind and decided he would be the best candidate for it.

Well, not long after I got him, I realized he was a bugger to pose! He had limited wrist mobility. He had wonky legs, and he couldn't stand with his feet wide apart like my other male dolls can. His feet were too small, and his waist was too tiny to wear SD13 trousers! So right away I realized I had no shoes and pants for him to wear. Even after glue sueding and restringing, he never became a fantastic poser. And I couldn't swap his head onto another body, because there wasn't a suitable resin match for ElfDoll's "homme" resin.

He was so frustrating that I considered selling him, and I even searched for replacement dolls for his character... but as it turned out, luckily for him, he is absolutely perfect for the character I wanted him to be (a human who sometimes thinks he's an Elf, a defense mechanism manifested in him due to the traumatic loss of his beloved father). I think he is absolutely beautiful, and he photographs so well as Demetrius/Glorfindel. His expressions even seem changeable to me, and suit him perfectly. I ended up putting silicone disks in his wonky knees, and finally got him some suitable clothing for his odd size, and I just live with him as he is, flaws and all.

See? Perfect. "Glorfindel" looks a little arrogant in this picture, but he can also look uncertain, insecure and lonely when he is Demetrius.

I have another problem guy, my Unidoll Jace. I love him... but his body is huge! He's not a good poser, and I wish he could reliably sit up on his own!

Oh... and I do have a problem child character... the twin sister to my Souldoll Lune, Kaoru. I have bought NINE BJD girls to be her character, and ended up selling six of them because they were SO WRONG! I even bought Iplehouse Freezia twice, she was wrong BOTH times. Two of the nine ended up becoming other characters, and the last one is still here... but I still don't know if she is right, because I still keep looking. Maybe she is just not meant to live here with her brother...

    11. My troublesome fellow is Kakuzu. He is an Iplehouse JID and the second doll out of seven. His character has stitches on his face, arms, chest, and back. When I first got him everything was okay until I attempted to put stitches on his arms. In order to do that and seal them I had to take him apart. At the time I thought restringing him would be easy. Just a bit of muscle to pull the strings right? Nope because he was extremely loose and I tried about three times total and then gave up.*_* Luckily I had a friend coming over to a party that could help me but til the party he sat in pieces in his box.:( The second problem I've had with him is finding him a pair of pants that fit right. The first pair I got were from Iplehouse but the fabric was too thick and he couldn't sit properly in them. So he had to lean back in them and the second pair are thin enough for him to sit but are a little too small and make him look like a girl.:| Another problem with him is when I get new dolls he gets jealous and decides to start kicking, tilting his head down all the time, and being more of a problem then he already was.:sigh But through all that I still love him!:aheartbea:aheartbea:aheartbea:aheartbea:aheartbea

    12. I've only had Chance (secondhand RS Mei) for a few days and already I know she has a lot of attitude (which fits her personality, but still). My 5stardoll Amy boy (Tobias) and Yoka (Nova) pose like a dream, they are my best dolls and love the attention i give them. But Chance just doesn't want to be touched or dressed or looked at. For example, i was trying to put a handmade tshirt on her and she fell completely forward XD I didn't know she was that poseable. Her legs don't like to stay straight either

I still love her though. Maybe after i give her a bath to remove some yellowing, clothing that fits her, her true faun legs, and a faceup she'll be more appreciative.

    13. I'm not sure if Beckett is problematic or I just don't know how to deal with him! He's my first doll and he just seems to be such a pain in neck!

He came floppy as hell so I had to try my hand at restringing and wow, that was fun. Session started with noticing one of his headcap magnets had come loose from the cap so I had to glue that back in. I'm super short on the proper tools to do it so I work with a lanyard, a shoelace, some shoddy mini forceps, a pen and a bobby pin with a bit of string attached. I must have kept mismeasuring the elastic or something because every time I put him back together, he was still floppy or I couldn't get the elastic to reach all through his limbs. Took about four hours and called it quits when he was floppy still but less so than before.

Today I tried again, took him apart and cleaned off the staining from where I had left him dressed for three days. And, oh look, your other magnet has come loose! Stick that back in. Had another finger shredding restringing attempt, took like an hour and somehow he ended up with one leg kind of floppy and one leg pretty damn kicky. I just want him to be able to stand up on his own, that's all I ask!

I've banished him to his box for now so he can sit and think about what he did. Give a guy new eyes and he still gives you trouble, honestly...

    14. Restringing can be horrible, OMG, I dread the day I have to remove the hooves from my LTF hybrid...

Galatia9: Demetrius is a handsome fellow! Woah Kaoru has some high standards for her shell no? Good luck with your quest to find her.

    15. Hooves wouldn't that bad, as long as there is a separate foot/hoof part from the shin or lower leg or whatever it's called, it would go on like a regular foot I imagine. If the lower leg and hoof were one solid piece, THAT would be ridiculous. I can't even think of how that would work...

    16. I can say my dolls are all problem children. I can classify them to "big problem" child and "small problem" child :
Ren - His eyelashes fall every month, so I also have to fix it every month. I have changed many kinds of glue (safe for resin) to fix them but...without reason...they still come out. Like he doesn't want to wear eyelashes.
Fay - My little problem boy's legs are unstable. They always turn 180 degree and I have to fix them in order again and again. Don't know if just my doll is like this or also happens to other owner with same doll. (MD body made me so disappointed)
Alaistair : I know he is old (adopted) but somehow he just can't sit straightly without support. He lies almost time. Lazy boy. Restringing can't fix it either.
Araazu : This big brother has small feet, although he is 70 cm tall. So he can't stand alone.
Iori : This little girl can't stand too. She fell so often, even though she has a support. So I decided that she has to only "sit". And can't pose because when I let her right arm up, left arm down. Right arm front and left arm back...No posing anymore.
Katsuki : I can say that he is the best one now because he has less problems. Just his jointed hands are difficult to be as I wish.

So I hope that my 3 coming dolls will have less problems...God, please hear my little wish...

    17. OffRoot, you should check out the stringing tutorials here to help you with Beckett. (Love his name, BTW!) I will even tout my own stringing tute here, which shows how to estimate elastic length.

Thanks for your nice comment on Demetrius, Shirelae! Whoops, I should have written that clearer, the twin brother is Kaoru! The girl I'm trying to shell is Kiyako, his sister.

Hallowie29, they all seem to have their little quirks, don't they? Some more than others! Have you done any glue sueding with any of them? I was redressing my Angell Studio girl today, and she was driving me crazy with her wonky legs and ankles! She needs a major glue sueding. I have a DoD Too (one of my first BJDs), and he annoyed me with his posing for YEARS. And I didn't glue suede and restring him until I sent his head off for a new faceup four years after I got him. Now he poses FANTASTICALLY, and I kick myself for suffering with him for so long. LOL!

    18. Probably, my MNF ; she came with the syndrome of ''floppiness'' and also with a chiped leg (a portion) :'C I love her though!

    19. I've heard boiling will get dents out. I don't know alot about it though, haven't looked it up yet really. You could always do a little research and see if it might help.

    20. I would say that Andrew, my Ringdoll Andrew, is my problem child. Not real bad problems. He's just strung REALLY tight and he's also tall. This means standing is almost not an option, also makes him kicky and pinchy. I love him though. They're small problems that looser stringing would fix really.
