Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Trying to choose your next doll?

Jan 7, 2015

    1. I chose the one I would be most upset over losing out on (Limited.) I lost out on the first one on my list the day I went to order it so I went for the second one which was still available. I had another on the list which wasn't limited so I can wait a little longer to get her.

    2. Limiteds always took priority for me, whether on the secondhand MP or newly released. Then I would budget for non-limiteds when I had a chance to get them. I kept track of a list of dolls I wanted in the order of priority and just chose the next one. Priority could be determined by how much I liked the doll compared to the others, or how prepared/driven I was to start customizing that particular doll.

    3. happens to me a lot to fall in love with multiple dolls, so i look for owner photos and opinions on the doll which could REALLY change your opinion. also you want to make sure you don't lose that spark, that after some time if you don't love it as much as you did... in other words it would probably be easier after some time to pick and if nothing changes then other factors have to be pulled in, if your into the story side of the hobby then deciding the character really helps, or just how you want them to look overall. things like money are big too, but make sure you don't settle... them again you probably know these things already or more since I'm a noob but yeah

    4. I just ordered my first doll about 2 weeks ago and I already know which doll my 2nd one is going to be. I came into collecting thinking "I only want one and that's all I'll get" but the more I look around the more I see others I want. I love elves, but didn't think I'd find another I liked since I'm really picky. I want them (the one I ordered compared to the one I want) to look completely different from each other and they do, plus I'm looking for full sets. I don't want too realistic of a face but not too out there either.

    5. I don't have any OCs that I shell into dolls, so I just look for the sculpt that is most appealing to me. If i am interested in a particular sculpt, I go and obsessively comb through google images and Flickr for other peoples pics before I decide it is the one.

    6. I go through a very similar process! I also don't really do OC's either, and I also go through Flickr a ton to help me make decisions! I only have 2 dolls atm, the first one didn't have many owner pics (Doll Leaves Dora) but I just knew that I wanted her when I saw the company photos, and she was well within my price range at the time. I then got a tiny secondhand and she was kind of the same-I saw the owner pics and I just knew I wanted that sculpt! But in the process of finding these two I would look at and consider many other dolls and scour the internet for owner pics! It's part of the process of finding the one that really jumps out at you I think :)

I don't think I'd buy a doll if I didn't have at least a hair color or specific wig in mind (I'm obsessed with wigs haha!) I think I'd hold off until I knew at least a little bit what I wanted it to look like...! Right now I am saving up for a Minifee Ante and I have a few ideas what I'd like to do with her but haven't made any finally decisions yet. Hopefully once I have enough saved up I'll have at least decided on a skin tone! I know I want an Ante though because it was one of the first BJDs I ever saw and I immediately fell in love! And now I'm in a good place to save up for her so I'm really excited that I will soon be able to place that order! :)

    7. I never really 'choose' a doll. I told myself I was going to buy one ball-jointed doll and love it and cherish it and keep it until the end of times.

Yeah right. At the moment I have two dolls, one YOSD and one SD girl. The YOSD girl was my first ever and introduced me to the hobby. I found her secondhand on the bay while searching for an inexpensive starter doll and really loved her sculpt. To be honest I'm still madly in love with her but due to circumstances she's currently up for sale. I'm still hoping I won't have to part ways with her but for the moment I can't afford to keep her.

My second doll was actually a grail doll of mine. I first found her while browsing the website of the company that made my YOSD girl. I misclicked and accidently ended up on the page of the bigger girls and there she was. I saw her face and something inside of me clicked. She was an exact resin copy of a character that had been living in my head ever since I was little. However she was not available for purchase and it made me very sad. Through sheer luck she became available once more about half a year after my initial discovery. I begged and bothered my partner until he let me borrow his credit card to purchase her. I paid him back in full 5 minutes after I confirmed the purchase through his credit card. I was over the moon. She arrived in December 2014 and I'm currently still working out the details. She's still bald and naked but I hope to purchase the right items really soon. Saving up is more important at the moment since I can already admire her and write her backstory until I get the funds.

I don't have any more dolls left I really need to have but if I ever do get more funding I hope to purchase a tiny tan doll in the future. I have my mind set on a very popular sculpt and I'm very curious to see a tan skin doll in the 'flesh'. I already have two characters in my head that she would be suited for so I'll have to wait and see which one she suits best when she arrives. I also hope to own a male doll in the future, preferably a younger child. I don't have a character in mind for him though.

As you can read most of my dolls are chosen based on their likeness to my original characters. For the ones that don't have a character I usually look for over-the-top cute features, something that makes me go 'Awwwww...so cute!'. I have a weak spot for cute things. I fail...

And yet in my head I know I should just stick with one and spoil it...argh...

    8. Well I told myself only one boy and one girl, but here I am with 2 boys and no girl yet! I put it down to the fact that I'm very picky with girls, and I really want her to be the one. I just don't have the space to have a whole legion of dolls, so once she gets here that's it. I was surfing around, and my head totally got turned by all the beautiful owner pictures of Little Monica's Sarubia sculpt on Flickr. When I've saved up enough, and I'm planning on it being around Xmas this year, I'll be bringing her home. She's not a limited, so I've got plenty of time to wait and see if my head gets turned by another sculpt.

    9. I'm planning to stop getting new doll because I don't have much place to keep nor time to making many outfits for them but...I always find awesome dolls which I used to adore from the past, pop out in the market place :sweat Actually now I don't have any plan to choose my next doll but I think if I do, I'll choose male dolls in SD or bigger size because I'm not good at dealing with female dolls at all.

    10. I don't plan for dolls, it's more like they plan on when should they attack my wallet. I try hard to push them away and I do win half of the time, the other half though I generally can't win. Mostly because they hit my weakness orz

    11. I actually know all the dolls I want to have next...most of them are limited but I try not to buy many dolls in a small time because I like to spend more time with my current dolls and a new dolls means "all my attention". This year I will try not to buy anything because I got 4 dolls last year.

    12. I haven't picked out my first doll yet but I have a good idea of what I want.

    13. Ha! When I started out, my next doll was determined by my finding a suitable sculpt for a character. Almost from the first, though, my search was also driven by curiosity. As I discovered that I love BJDs purely as dolls, too, my "doll appetite" was soon fuelled by an urge to own dolls from different companies and in different sizes. So I'd go looking for a doll from a particular maker or in a particular size. Lately my doll purchases have been combinations of sculpts that I have long loved and events that make them more approachable price-wise.

I would like to think that I have bought my last doll yesterday, since I ordered what I suppose is my grail doll - but is it ever the last? Anyway, if the urge takes me again, I will probably be tempted by a doll that is a) from a company of which I don't own any dolls yet, and b) a tiny. Because if it is unlikely that I am really done with doll buying, I do feel like I'm done with the buying of large (60 cm and up) dolls.

    14. I usually spend a lot of time looking up pictures of the dolls and then end up impulse buying a different one lol. Half of my dolls are also second hand though so it was then or never.

    15. I try to keep the other dolls I have in mind when choosing my next doll.. whether or not they would match well together.

    16. Usually my next doll chooses me. ;)

    17. When I'm choosing my next doll I'm definitely thinking about his/hers to be character. Usually I try to find a mold that suits best the already existing character in my mind, but some times I just fell in love with specific mold and I start to think a new character for him/her. And this is also one of my tactics to really know which doll I really want to have. Because if I really want it after a long time then I know I really love it, but some times it doesn't work. ;) A good example of this is my 3rd doll, I saw her and from that moment on I knew that I really wanted to have her. :)

    18. I really really want a Fairyland Minifee, but I know I'll probably go with a different doll because they are kind of pricey (for me).

    19. I'm like this, but with bodies. I guess I'm just too picky on the style (all of my current dolls are hybrids). I'll think that I've decided on a body, and then find some aspect of it that I can no longer tolerate, or I find the perfect body, only to see a new release that fits my idea better. For example, I've been looking at Ringdoll bodies, because I like how...cylindrical (?)...they look (versus the 5th motif and Dollits triangle torso). But I just now discovered that Mirodoll is making another 70cm body, and they do custom resin colors...so back to waiting and creeping on owner photos for me!

    20. All of my BJDs except for Tuesday are shells of OCs from large works I've done in the past. I write a lot, and about a lot of different things, but I write with others. We move on from projects or abandon the relationship altogether, but I have a need to maintain some representation of those stories and those friends. With two exceptions (based on availability/opportunity), I've acquired my dolls in chronological order of the end of their stories in my own life. They may not be the absolute perfect impression of the characters and settings they're meant to manifest, but they must all capture the right aesthetic of my emotions in the writing at that time.
