Turned off by a doll sculpt because it seems like everybody else has it?

Jan 7, 2010

    1. Put me on the side of not caring how many others might or might not have the same doll as one I do, or like. My doll is my doll, and all that counts is that it pleases me! I don't worry about following the crowd, or standing out because of something I own, it may sound corny to some, but its being myself that makes me special and unique. And as an extension of that uniqueness that carries over into the dolls that I collect, and in the case of ABJDs, the ways in which I dress them, wig them, and change their eye colors to suit my own tastes. But everyone's entitled to their own opinions, and if it makes someone uncomfortable to want or have a doll that is considered popular, then by all means get other they should get another that pleases then more.

    2. I understand what your saying, but a doll that is very limited might be more expensive probably. Even if more than fifty people like the same doll sculpt, the end product is still different. Not everyone have the same taste, style, etc. So I don't mind if other hundreds of people having the same sculpt.

    3. Hmmmmm. I'm in the mode of liking what I like regardless of popularity or sometimes, un-popularity. :) Tons of people have the Volks 4Sisters sculpt and I still love mine to bits, but I have retired her and rebooted her with a new sculpt (an I-Doll Alice). Similarly to my Megu, my Supia Rosy and Zaoll Luv have dedicated followings of people who love those sculpts. I have four Narindolls (2 OE Naraes, 1 Narin Charisma, and 1 Classic Narae) and I would say they have a fairly healthy following too. On the other hand, I have two I-doll Studio girls, a Souldoll Ize, and a TranscendB sculpt that not many talk about. I love all of them equally though. I have plans to acquire another TranscendB head as well as possibly an Iplehouse Asa to round off my brood. Iplehouse EIDs are wildly popular and I have no doubt that Asa will make a fantastic splash. If not Asa, I really like the prototype photos of Raurencio Studio's Ladyline...undoubtedly also a company that doesn't get discussed much. :)

    4. I'm really split on this issue! I do agree that the same sculpt can look different with different faceups etc., and I think it's important to get the doll that you really love and not be pressured about what everyone else has. On the other hand, I think I can understand what you're saying about the dolls that everyone seems to have. I think you can make it look like a unique doll that stands out, but sometimes even if you have the idea for one the idea doesn't appeal to you enough to actually make your doll that way. If your taste for a style happens to coincide with a doll that is chosen for that style by lots of people, then yours might turn out looking like everyone else's.
I can firmly say that, even if everyone and their mother had a Volks Kurumi, I'd still want one (she'd be cheaper, too, so I could buy her more things xD). But Kurumi is my absolute dream doll and I love the one I have to pieces. I'm sure she looks like all the other Kurumis on the board and I don't have the illusion that mine is particularly unique in looks. But in personality, I'm pretty sure I haven't seen one like her, and that makes me feel as though she's unique, and she stands out to me! <3
I don't typically have popular taste in dolls, so a part of me thinks that I can't really have a full comment on the issue, as well. ^^; I think that if the popularity of a doll made me not want a doll, then I didn't want that doll enough or love it enough in the first place, so I shouldn't have it/shouldn't get it. But that's just my personal belief on it, and I guess this is definitely more opinion than 'advice' per se.

    5. Reading this thread, a thought occurred to me. Anyone have that quote handy (I believe it was from a Poe story) about the most exquisite beauties having some unusual facial feature? I think a doll may honestly look more beautiful to a person if it looks different than what they are used to seeing, simply because something you see all the time inherently cannot be striking.

That said, I've never given up on a doll I wanted because I thought too many other people had it. Not being a big Luts fan probably helps, though. ;)

    6. Honestly, I pick out my dolls based on how they appeal to me. I will eventually have a very mismatched doll family, I'm sure! Some of the dolls that appeal to me are cavity-inducing in their cuteness, others border on the downright creepy, and still others seem so elegantly handsome/beautiful. But I don't care how 'popular' the sculpt is - if it suits what I'm going for (be it a character or just something that catches my eye), it's put on my bookmarks to eventually save up for.

    7. I'll have to admit- at first, I really was turned off by the idea of having a doll sculpt that "everyone" had.

But, I have to say- I honestly don't care anymore x3! And I'm quite happy with that- now I can get a MNF Miyu, a KDF Bory, and all those awesome sculpts :) (which, btw, I am totally planning on getting- omg a Miyu *u*~)
Someone above me even mentioned- everyone on DoA could have the same sculpt- they could have a DoC Zen or a Soom Beyla, but they'll never have a June or a Jeremy ;3

    8. yea i definitly felt this way when i was looking for my first doll. it seemed like everyone had a luts shiwoo, or some other kind of luts doll. i also wasn't a huge fan of these sculpts in general, but constantly seeing them all the time made me less inclined to consider those dolls.

    9. Nah, for me it doesn't really matter if it's uncommon or super-popular. I have a Lishe as well as MNF Shiwoos, both of which are super-common. I also have possibly the only FantasyDoll Victor on DoA, one of the few Soom Nions, and a DIM Belita. I buy what I like, popular or not. :)

    10. I've never been turned off by a doll sculpt because a lot of people have it since I usually never like doll sculpts that a lot of people have XD I always plunge in to the limiteds and the a la carte type things!

    11. actually yes i do turn off from a doll when i know that a lot of people posses it so that is why i can not decide my first bjd

    12. I realised that if I felt I was 'turned off' by many people having the sculpt, it means that I wasn't really into the sculpt in the first place. XD After all, I now own a Migidoll Ryu, who seems by far the most popular Migidoll sculpt, and I personally know at least one person who owns one, as well as a few who were hoping to get one. I wonder if the idea that 'oh, this sculpt is too common/popular' is just an excuse for me not to get something I don't really love in the first place? XD

    13. I'm KINDA interested in an El. I'm not 100% sold on the sculpt because he looks a bit young to me, but the fact that there are, like, 10 billion Els out there is that extra added push that ensures that I will never get one even if I'm kinda interested in one. However, I know that there are quite a few of almost all of Soom's MDs out there, but that never turns me off of buying one or loving one. :)

    14. in general, the soom monthly dolls do absolutely nothing for me. I don't think it's due solely to the fact that everyone freaks out over them (or that they're so popular they're ruining the market place)-- they just all sort of look slightly the same to me, with different accessories?

I don't think they're ugly persay in fact some of them are quite nice, There's just something about them I don't really like. I also think they're over hyped; I feel like more people are excited about the horns, hooves, ears and crazy outfits, etc.. than they are about the sculpts themselves? First and foremost when I buy a doll I want a gorgeous sculpt, the bells and whistles can come later... or not at all, as far as I'm concerned!

I'm not speaking ill of anyone who owns one of these, buy whatever floats your boat, it's your money! I just personally can't really appreciate it, we're all entitled to our tastes.

    15. No, not at all, infact i found it helped!
I have an incoming Resinsoul Mei, and found the large amounts of pictures there are of her (in every colour and angle imagable) very helpful when I was in the thinking stages of buying her.

    16. No, but some doll sculpts look too similiar. Some sculpts share too many similiaritys ie big eyes little noses, they all look the same. I prefer dolls with a certain inviduality.

    17. I am quite relived to hear someone else with this opinion. I am exactly the same.
They all look pretty much the same to me and also for me personally I hated what they did to the Zodiac, being a hobby astrologer and because I was hoping to make a satyr myself in the future. :| So when it comes to Soom I can sort of see why people like them, though I do not get the hype at all, but I would never ever want one. Honestly some days I get kind of sick of hearing about them.

I am split though because I do find it sad if something like that gets in ones way of getting a sculpt they love. Fortunately I have not fallen for any of the Sooms. I do own some pretty common sculpts such as Luts Moon and a boy Ani and I have no problem with that.
So for me perhaps it is when there is mass hysteria over a company that makes me turn away and look elsewhere more so than when a sculpt is simply popular.

I just want to add that I hope that I have not offended anyone! I do not think anyone is stupid or has bad taste just because they are different than me! It simply means just that... we are all different.

    18. I do think I'm a little... just a teeny bit turned off by the more common sculpts because everyone does seem to have them. It just like a good song that keeps getting played on repeat and turning so I can barely stand it. But they are pretty and as long as the person loves them, their popularity isn't something that should really matter. It's just to me a lot of the common sculpts don't call to me. But if a common sculpt did, and I truly loved it, I'd get it and try to make it as unique as possible. So perhaps I'm a fence sitter. :)

    19. I guess if being on the forum, sharing them on the forum is important to you, then the mold exodus would affect how you feel about your doll. Like how someone up there mentioned that there's like, 10 billion Els out there. Imho, they're not my El. Sure, mine could end up looking like someone else's, but I'm not going out of my way to find out, so it's no biggie.

Not to say that I won't be let down if someone else's El looks exactly like mine (and heaven forbid if one of us starts crying that OURS was that way FIRST), but meh. Your El is yours, my El is mine. I can't touch another person's El who is all the way in the US, so it'll be dumb to be so hung over about something like that.

Although, I admit that if someone locally bought the same mold and got it all the bells and whistles of expensive faceups and designer clothes, I -would- be a little turned off at the thought that my doll (most of them have unprofessional faceups done by me) would be compared to it, but I think that's a different story.

    20. I really don't mind if a sculpt is popular.
Heck, I'd love it if more people had AoD Juli like I do because I'd love to see what kind of looks she could pull off. I've only seen three other than mine, and they all looked so different and amazing.
If getting a more popular sculpt it's even easier to determine a style because you have so many examples of what looks good on them.
