Turned off by a doll sculpt because it seems like everybody else has it?

Jan 7, 2010

    1. Not really, if I like the sculpt, I can always create my own version. Besides, I believe saving for it, buying and customizing the sculpt is enough to make it unique :)

    2. Sometimes I feel like that, but I know zero amount of people that have them that know me. So even if I get a popular sculpt my friends won't know any better and think their awesome. :)

    3. Though I do get a bit turned off when I see that 50+ people have the same sculpt of a doll I want, I still feel like getting that particular doll. Sure almost every possible customization has been done to a doll in which 50+ people own the sculpt to, but I would still want it. I originally wanted to get the doll for the doll, not because nobody else had it, or because it was popular. I do like limited edition dolls because, as you said, they do have a certain feel of specialness to them. I don't particularly like limited edition dolls over regular sculpts, but still I would be more pron to get a limited than a regular sculpt if I was on the edge of whether or not to buy it. So basically I don't really stop liking a doll just because a lot of people have the same sculpt because, like you said, there are tons of ways to customize it so no two dolls will be exactly the same.

    4. It doesn't quite matter to me. Everything can be customized easily anyway and even if it happens that there are dolls out there which have the exact same outward appearance, the personality and character I gave to my doll, I'm sure are still unique.

    5. For me it is realy a double-edged dagger...
If alot of people has that particular type/mold of doll, then standing our or your doll being unique can be somehow deter,
but it also means that the particular doll is superb, and it is an assurance that it is a quality doll ^^

Most important is that you should just be sure that you really really liker the doll
other people owning doll should not be really a factor, no one can dictate you, you are the only one who can choose for you
your doll will be special and uniquely being himself regardless of it being the same with other doll owners

    6. Yeep. Sabik, for example. Too popular - and I absolutely don`t get the reason for it.

    7. Unfortunately this has happened for me with the Ante sculpt.

I've seen that face so many times I've almost gotten sick and tired of it xD

I still think she's a cutie, but... urgh.

    8. I must agree it's rather stupid, but I'm very much like that myself. The feeling that whenever you own something everyone has too, it doesn't really feel as "yours" and you want something that truly ís "yours" and "unique" and "special". Though I do not own any doll, I do recognize that feeling.

    9. I wouldn't change my mind about owning something just because I perceived it as "too popular." If I like it, I like it. For me, it's that simple. Even if a million other people have the same sculpt, mine will be different to me because it is mine. I don't need to strive for ultimate-special-uniqueness. I'm okay with not standing out~

    10. No, I don't think I've ever been turned off by the popularity of anything.
Quite the opposite, I find myself attracted to things that have a lot of people saying things like "They're overrated." Popular enough that it turns off people who are annoyed by something's overpopularity? Sounds like it's pretty darn popular, and worth checking in to.

Though for doll sculpts, for me it's entirely personal taste, and what I plan to do with it. I can see the problem, if you like a common style for your dolls, like gothic or punky. Lots of people emulate those styles so it could be easy to have your dolls looking similar.
But I personally prefer fantasy dolls, so I'm not too worried about anyone else's dolls looking like a twin for mine.

    11. Not really. I actually think of it as a good thing because it gives me an opportunity to look at what looks good on that particular sculpt and what I don't like so much. It also helps to make sure that it's the sculpt that you really want. There are HARDLY any of the Asleep Eidolon Jiao Jr and some of the ones I do find are company photos. But my heart was set on her otherwise. The doll I do want is a Crobidoll Yean-ho which yes, everyone does seem to have that sculpt. But like I said, it helps me make sure that it's the doll I want (and it is cause every time I found him and looked up what doll he was XD it was him a lot of the time!) and help me figure out what I want to do with him lookwise.
But to have others affect how you feel about BJDs... it's like how I have one person not like the fact that I want to cosplay the same character as them because they don't want me to be one of the many people who cosplay them. If it's something you really love then it shouldn't matter what others have. As long as YOU'RE happy.

    12. I don't really take into consideration how popular a mold is. My one and only bjd is a Chiwoo and when I see everyone else on the forum talking about their Chiwoo's, I generally think: That person must have great taste, she/he fell in love with Chiwoo too! When I see another Chiwoo he almost feels like family to me.
However, the one I am seriously consdering getting for my second doll is a lot more rare so, go figure.

    13. I don't think it would bother me too much. I wouldn't mind getting a puki and pukis are the hottest thing right now. I buy dolls if they appeal to me, and most of the time, dolls that appeal to me the most are not usually the most popular sculpts. :)

    14. I guess I don't really notice who has what sculpt or anything anyway, but I also don't really care if a million other people have one that I want. The point tends to be that I like it and I want it, that's why I get it. But then I have other hobbies where I collect things like figures where you know there are a lot of one figure, so I guess I'm used to it?

    15. With my Elfdolls (Mir & Yumi) I know a few people who have the same model... but somehow with the variety of eyes and wigs and costume, we all end up with dolls that seem very individualized characters. I'm not exactly sure how that happens, but even when Person A and Person B have the same mold with the same face up (company default), similar eyes & wigs... there's still some sense of the dolls as different characters.

THough, for me, one of the things I really like about ABJD, IS that the dolls are so highly customizable. Even without going absolutely wild looking for "different" eyes/wigs/clothes.

    16. I wish more people had Kid Delf Lemons, actually.
I already ordered her, but I've only seen about five owner pictures of her. Still, she's been gorgeous in all of them.
Besides that, I think most of my favorite molds are uncommon because of a quirk I have. I like things that I don't see often. (Then I want to see them, lol)
Dunno if this counts, but when I found out Volks wasn't the only company out there, I was shocked. After that, I thought their dolls were very boring compared to Luts. That was four years ago, lol.

    17. I have rather quickly acquired three versions of Ante because I dearly love her, and that sculpt is so versatile--and I got her because a jillion DoA posts convinced me that she looks different depending on the creativity of the owner. None of mine look alike! I suppose the popularity of Ante was a plus for me, then, just in terms of numbers of user pics. Otherwise, I wouldn't drop that kind of cash for a popular doll unless it made my heart sing, in which case I really wouldn't care who else owned one.

    18. A little bit, but it wouldn't change my mind. I like yeon-ho and chiwoo, and if I consider getting them at some point, the popularity will not be a deciding factor for me. (or turn-off, as you say)

    19. I don't care if lots of people have a doll I want. Why should I? I will almost certainly never see these people and their doll in real life. Heck, having lots of pictures of a sculpt is a plus for me. It helps me determine if I really like the doll or not. But the simple idea of "lots of people have this doll, so I should stay away" will never ever come into my mind as I'm choosing a doll. I have dolls because I love them, not because I want to feel unique, or like an individual rather than part of a crowd. That's what my personality is there for! :)

Put another way... What gives my doll the sense of being mine is the love and ideas that I put into them. There may be a bajillion Antes, but that doesn't impact how I treat and enjoy my Ante.

    20. I think it's a bonus if the sculpt you want is popular 'cause it means there are an abundance of owner pics. It can be a real pain trying to decide on a doll by only looking at the promo pictures.
After all, even if a sculpt is popular it doesn't bring down the doll's worth. It just means that a lot of other people appreciate his/her beauty. :)
