Turned off by a doll sculpt because it seems like everybody else has it?

Jan 7, 2010

    1. No...This hobby is gorgeous in a fact, that even if they are thousands of people with XY sculpt, every one of them is completely different and unique.

So, even though I know that some sculpts I like are the "super-popular" ones I know that I can make them into something no one other has :)

    2. Hmm, I have a friend who stops liking something the moment he feels too many people likes it. No matter if he was a die-hard fan before, he simply starts hating it. I understand the sentiment. I don't share it, though.

I don't care if a sculpt is popular or not. I don't care about how many people has the same doll as I do. Why should I care? I buy a doll because I like him/her. Can I customize them? Yes. Do I want to? Depends. Maybe I like the default fullset. Maybe a zillion people likes it too. BJD are supposed to be popular and liked. If they were to sell one doll of each sculpt, we'd be out of dollie companies in no time. I'm glad some sculpts are popular, really glad, because it means I can buy one if I want to.

Right now, in example, I own (still waiting) a DZ Asura. I know exactly how many people has the same fullset as I do. I don't care to count how many more own the regular Chen. What in the Nine Hells gives me the right to ask why does people have the same sculpt? We are all free to choose which dolls we want to buy. And once I buy a doll, it becomes unique, because it's MINE. MY character, MY personality, MY story, MY love for MY doll. That makes my dollie one of a kind. And that's enough.

    3. If I like something, then I like it--it has nothing to do with other people. Admittedly the idea that you can't like something because too many other people do has always seemed strange to me. It seems like in order to give something up that easily, then you must not have been that into it to begin with. Not buying a doll because it's popular feels like I would be giving other people too much influence over my own doll buying which is a very personal thing. Plus, since abjds are customizable, no two of the same sculpt or going to look alike anyway. Besides, the popularity of certain sculpts can wax and wane over time which is all the more reason to not base a decision on it.

    4. Definitely not, I've always loved Luts Kid Delf Bory boy and that's a very popular sculpt for their Kid Delfs. I've always intended to have one and finally have gotten around to it. I know there's a horde of them out there but this boy is MINE, I look at him and he's my Yuuji. It's like fashion, if you like the trend and it works for you - why not give it a go?

    5. Even if 20 people show up with the same default faceup fullset doll, the faceups are all done by hand, not machine, so they are STILL going to be individual.

(though a meet up with 20 nearly identical dolls would be kinda freaky but maybe cool at the same time.)

When I buy a doll, i buy it because I LOVE THAT DOLL, not because it's popular or trendy,
OR because it's rare. (I did get one doll that was a mystery, almost sight unseen... a net friend was selling her, and I had a few dark not quite in focus photos... but some how I knew she was gonna work.)

    6. I actually felt that way about certain sculpts and companies for awhile. I'm not the same way anymore, of course, but for awhile I would avoid visiting Volks or LUTS because I thought they were too mainstream. Same with certain Fairyland sculpts.

    7. Not really. I just figure I like what I like and that's it. If A lot of other people like it then that just means to me that it's something good. :)

((However the doll I bought like...it seems like NO ONE has it so I'm not one to really talk. Just get what you like is what I think. ^^ ))

    8. I've never been, but I do get jealous seeing other Shushu's and how uber awesome people make them and how boring mine seems in comparison xD But I still love her and I'm not turned off at all. I hate telling people I liked reading Twilight because it seems many people jumped on the hating bandwagon due to popularity, and never actually read the book. Not saying all, but some.

    9. I return to this thread again, many months later! I just recently ordered an Ante, definitely one of THE most popular sculpts out there... She's just so cute!!! We'll see how I feel about her when she arrives. But, the way I see it is: There's a reason they're popular. Because they're CUTE. Megi was adorable too.

    10. For this types of thigs dolls are unique custom, the only manner that you have is create your own.

I don't think so, I very happy my dolls are 1 on this world n_n

    11. I have in the past looked at dolls and when I see that so many other people have one I do get put off a little. Then I go and look at the doll's blank head and see what I can do with it that no one else has done. The scope for individuality in each of these dolls is huge and I'm slowly learning that a popular doll can be just as individual as the person that owns it.

    12. If I the doll speaks to me, I do not a bit care who else has it. Anyway, as mostly with other items, I only buy what I love. I guess Iplehouses are pretty common, so only in this forum 50 or more other people may own an E.I.D. Luo. That's fine with me. The only thing that interests me is to see as many owner pics as possible. Not to copy, but to see what is possible and perhaps what I can imagine for him.

    13. I tend to really customize my dolls so that whatever sculpt they may be, they turn into my character. So no worries for me.

    14. If I like the sculpt, I don't care if everyone in the hobby had it. I'd still buy it.

    15. I was. A Soon Dia, but now I really want one. I unconsciously created this character out of the sculpt and I'm in love with it. So, I'll wait around for a re-release from Soom.

    16. The thing with dolls are no matter how many have them, yours is still unique. And I actually DON'T agree with the thread starter, not everyone has an Akando. I mean in the short 3 years I've been here, I've been trolling the Iplehouse discussion and waiting rooms and have't really seen one. I myself don't have one and I don't plan to either. I haven't heard other people pining for one at all. The thing with dolls is, I'm uncomfortable with buying a doll based on company pics. I need owner pics to help make my judgement. I also believe that dolls/companies no one wants to buy might have something wrong with them. I'm proud to say that I own a Soom Dia which is one of Soom's most popular sculpt along with their Hyperon (and I have that as well). I'm very happy with both of them because I've made them special. I also like looking at other people's rendition of them because it gives me ideas when I'm stuck with their faceup.

EDITED please see below for explanation. I speak of something very specific when referring to sculpts/companies that no one buys from.

    17. Nahh, can't say that's ever happened. Besides the fact that I love all the dolls to begin with -even those I initially dislike I'll still find owner pictures that will make me appreciate them- I get dolls to shell characters, so... what if everyone has a Soom Dia? He was the perfect sculpt to be Melchior, as a matter of fact I can hardly imagine another doll taking his place. What if everyone else has a minifee Shushu? Hyorin is my most favorite girl doll and that says a lot considering I don't bond with female dolls easily... yet this girl has stuck around for three years and I'd never dream of letting her go.

On the other hand I am also known to own ridiculously limited or obscure sculpts as well, and although I've not once been turned off a sculpt because it was popular, there's a certain pride I take in those "rare" findings. My DHS Ossia is one of 25 in the entire world, and there were only 11 of my Crobidoll NS Yujin ever made. My DZ Nyu, although basic for a short while, was never popular and I've only ever seen two or three others around... and my mr. Kitty... well, I think there were 13 ordered in total, as well as the two that the artist herself kept uvu

I think, however, that exclusivity should never be 'the' decisive factor for owning a doll. Buy those you like best, and if you too take pride in your dolls being truly unique and rare, sculpt-wise, if they so happen to be so let it be an added bonus, a cherry on top :)

    18. Did you mean to say that you DON'T believe that dolls no one wants to buy must have something wrong with them? Because you might want to rethink that logic. I know of only one other person who owns the Glorydoll Mitsuki sculpt beside myself, and while his body may have left a bit to be desired (primarily in the engineering department), there was nothing wrong with his head and he's extremely adorable. I am also the only person I know of with an Elysium Jamie head and it's gorgeous, nothing faulty or strange in person that wasn't shown in photos. Sometimes there are just some companies that people don't know about, that doesn't mean they create faulty products or that they Photoshop their photos to the nth degree.

    19. Unfortunately (and I say it because it's miserable for me having this personality trait) I've always been adamantly opposed to liking what's popular. . . it's like a disease. I mean, when we were tiny children and my younger sister told my parents she liked chocolate I decided I had to stop liking chocolate from that point on and and never eat it so that we would be different. I kept up the charade for quite a while and it was grueling!
So yes, I'm part of the crowd who'd prefer to have a less popular sculpt. It's not a fixed rule -- I get curious about trendy sculpts and want to investigate them, and sometimes I wait so long to buy a sculpt I see it get very popular, but what happens too frequently for me is that my crippling insecurity will cause me to hate my own dolls because I can't help from feeling all the others are better / more interesting etc. It's a thinking mode I hope I can repair in the future to be honest.
Anyway I think there are a lot of less self destructive reasons to like unpopular sculpts, and to each their own. Even with my unhealthy thinking and insecurity there's still a great feeling when you find out which of your doll hobby friends have the same sculpts as you. :aheartbeaAll of my close online friends do have overlaps with me, and I think that's just so cool! It makes me feel closer to my friends.

    20. It depends if I REALLY like the sculpt. But I have always been turned off by MNFs because of how very common they are. I totally don't want to discourage people from getting them because I'm sure they are amazing, and it's just my personal issue that prevents me from wanting one (besides Woosoo, I love those eyes :whee:). But after seeing MNF after MNF, and with many of them customized in pretty similar styles, it just starts to wear me down. Same with Venitu tbh. Most of them look the same to me, and I never really liked the sculpt to begin with. But if I really love a sculpt I think I'll go for it no matter how many people have it.
But it's also possible that my opinion is subconsciously influenced by the sculpt's popularity, because I just now kind of realized the majority of dolls on my wishlist are ones that have a scarcity of owner pics and discussion about them... :sweat
