Undisclosed Modifications... has this happened to you?

Mar 10, 2007

    1. Agreed fully, Something along the lines of the doll actually had been modified and this wasn't described, but the seller was willing to work things out with me. This lets others know that the seller did have an incident of not describing somthing fully, but did sort things out. It will also make suure that seller will scrutinize their dolls with a magnifying glass looking for flaws so they can be mentioned, rather than face another feedback like that in the future. It just helps keep things more honest

I would like to say I'd give a seller the benefit of the doubt. But really in this hobby there is a high level of entitlement and expectation that you will recover the full cost of a doll when you resell it. I have even seen folk listing standard dolls at beyond what they cost in order to try and recover customs and shipping fees. I'm sure many mods and dammages don't get mentioned because the seller feels they are entitled to recover teh cost annd are worried that the damage will reduce the value of the doll. I'd say many are even willing to work something out if the buyer complains, but are prepared to take the gamble that nothing will be said and they won't have to refund anything.

I also really agree with nissi_nirvani when contacting the seller, draft your message and come back to it later when you're not seeing so much red.

    2. Actually I think she sold faster for it... though really this is wishful thinking on my part and I couldn't know for sure.

But why not? A mod that improves poseability and is decently done... why shouldn't it raise the value next to one that hasn't had the mod... (all other things being equal)?

She sold the night I listed her, so I don't think my mod made her "hard to sell" XD

    3. Yes!!! I hate that... It makes me want to cry, alot. I've gotten a few previously owned dolls and I love adopting... But it really upsets me when i get a doll and the most common thing I find happens is someone will sand the seams, do a half-a$$ed job on it and then not seal it.
So then i end up with a doll with huge dirty black seams and it takes a lot of work to get the seams and resin back down to a point where i can blush.
Coat your seams, or don't bother sandin' you know? :...(

    4. Not everyone "coats" their doll bodies, because they receive so much wear from clothing, posing, etc. that it wears off the MSC rapidly.

I sand my seams but do not blush or coat the body, and I have never had a problem with the resin at the seams changing colors, getting dirtier than the rest of the body, or anything else. In fact, friends and strangers keep asking me to sand their seams because they love the job I did.

The point is, just because someone doesn't "coat" their seams doesn't mean it's a bad job. If you prefer your seams sanded, that's fine -- coat them yourself when you get the doll. But don't blow off those who don't as people who shouldn't have "bothered" sanding at all.

The issue, I believe, is not the coating, but what you said earlier in your post -- doing a half-assed job on the sanding itself.

    5. Ehehee... ok now it has been my turn to get a doll with mods that I didn't know about :|

I did suspect about them from the pics the seller sent me but she assured me she didn't know anything about any mods since she had gotten it like that from another DoAer.

So when I got this limited head, I realized at least his cheeks had been sanded down. It kinda annoys me since this is a very limited head and I loved those chubby cheeks the most.

Oh well, he's still gorgeous, but I would prefer if someone had told me about this beforehand so I knew what to expect. Or more like someone had told the previous owner :sweat

    6. The only mod I've realised has been that little earring hole I got with my first Too doll. It wasn't a big deal but yeah i wish it had been mentioned beforehand.

Have since replaced the head and will be selling it on -with- the note about the mod.

    7. It has happened to me, actually. In the case of a recent purchase, the seller stated that the head had been sanded to remove yellowing. They didn't bother to mention that the eyelids and trearducts had been compeletely sanded off, however, or that the sanding was partially finished and done with a very rough grit leaving deep scratches.

Its going to take a lot of resanding and a little additive modding to get her ready to see the world.

But more often I'm told the doll head is the wrong skin color. Twice now I've bought oldskin Volks FCS (an F-25 and F-04 by the old number system) heads having been told they were normal skin. They were both white.

I can't complain much about getting a more rare and valuable version than what I had expected or paid for (paid $120 w/shipping for the F-25 which apparently values closer to $250, and $160 w/shipping for the F-04 who's value is drastically dropped by the aforementioned lack of eyelids), but it is much easier to get a hold of an NS body than a white one.

    8. Thankfully I haven't had a bad experience with my dolly purchases so far.. *phew*

But as a seller, whenever I'm selling a doll, I try to include as much information as I can, such as the whole story of the dolls' past, previous owners etc. When I'm the first owner I take a good look-over and put down all the details on modifications, and make a point of chips, dirt, face-ups I've cleaned off, materials used, condition of coloring etc etc. And posting clear close-ups and pictures that really show the product is a must! I always try to show everything, and if the buyer wants more pictures of something specific I try to provide them. I always include the fact that I am in no way a professional modifyer/face-up artist, because no matter how happy I am with my work it may not look as good in someone elses' oppinion.

I never really sell anything to make a profit, I'm usually even a bit under the general market prices. And the shipping price is rarely included because I have to pay for that with real life money (I haven't gotten a bank-account wired up to my paypal because I'm an international trader), and I ship the way I would want other people to ship to me (careful packaging, insurance and tracking #'s).

      It's just a sellers' duty!

    9. I can't imagine why anyone would fail to mention extensive or drastic mods; things like sueding, wiring etc are not so bad if not mentioned AND done right. Damage also. Tiny, unnoticeable things like chips and what not sometimes are overlooked, but if your doll broke a hand and you didn't mention that, yeah. =\

      If I wanted to sell my Zen, I'd have to say he has two broken, repaired fingers on the left hand, 1 pierced ear, and his nose slightly sanded because I dropped him on his face. @@;

    10. Hello,

I recently bought a CP Vampire Delf Elf Soo head from someone on a yahoo doll group.
The seller was really nice, she showed me many pictures of the head, charged me the same price as on the eLuts website for it, and also included some free stuff : a pair of glass eyes, a used wig that is a bit frizzy but nice, a simple handmade dress, 1 pair socks, 1 panty, 1 pair running shoes. She shipped everything promptly and marked it as a gift for customs.

The problem is that after I removed the faceup from the doll head (it had very thick black eyeliner all around the eyes, so it was hard to tell exactly the eye shape from the pictures she showed me) I can tell that the eyeholes have been modded, they have been sanded (maybe dremmel?) and are a bit bigger. While it’s not ugly or anything, it’s not exactly even, the right and left eyeholes are a bit different; it’s noticeable in person. Also if I put an eye in the right eye well, it doesn’t fit perfectly in.( I can see a space between the eye and the eyehole) I would need to do some sanding to fix that and make the eyes more even (and I am afraid to mess it up too... but I guess if I do it slowly it should be ok)

My problem now is that I am wondering if the seller should have told me before selling me the head that the eyeholes had been modded? Or was I supposed to know just by looking at pictures? Is it my fault for not asking her if she had made any alterations to the head? The seller was nice in every aspect except this problem, so I don't want to be mean to her or too demanding, but I feel I had a right to know this ahead. Also, since the eye mod is not perfect, does it decrease the value of the head? But since she gave me extra stuff with the head at no charge, should I just shut up and not complain about it? I will probably only use the eyes and wig she gave me.

I would like to have your honest opinion on this. If you bought a head 2nd hand that you thought was like new (with a faceup made by the previous owner that you can remove), at the price the company that makes it sells it for, then you saw there was a noticeable modification made to the head (in this case eye shape was changed), what would you do? Would you contact the seller? If so what would you tell them or demand from them? Or is it better to forget about it and do what I can with the head as is?

Thanks for anyone who will give me their opinion.
(I will take some pics to post tonight)

    11. Hello,

Please read my initial post #150, I took pics of the eye mod that the seller did not inform me of. This is my first resin head and so I am not really sure how eye holes are supposed to be. Of course, I don't think they should be uneven like that. I would like to know if you consider this a good mod, ok, bad or really bad? Would it be possible for me to fix it? Would that be really hard work to do?
The cost for this head new from eluts is $110.00 and that is what I paid the seller since I thought I would get the same head as buying from Luts. Did I get really screwed? What would have been a good price for this modded head? Please help!! Your comments will be very helpful to me!

This is what the head is supposed to be like

This is the head I got after removing the faceup around the eyes (it had really thick heavy black eye liner around the eyes before)

Sorry if I posted so many pics, but I want to show the eyeholes in as much details as possible to get a good opinion. Your opinion would really mean a lot to me. Thank you!

    12. chibichibiusa- you have what we call an eye opening, a very common mod done to dolls with sleeping eyes. the seller really should have told you before selling her to you though... eye openings are done by hand so they are not always perfect. This one does not look too bad though... once you put a face up one her I doubt anyone would be able to tell. If it really bothers I would not hold onto her.

    13. Thanks for your comment, do you think I should have paid less than $110 or was it fair for the seller to charge me the price of a new head?
I think with a bit sanding and faceup it would look nice, but I feel I might have been charged more that what the head is worth?

    14. No, the head should be worth the same price, or even a bit more (if the mod was better). But the seller SHOULD have told you the head was modified. I think that mods aesthetically enhance a doll if done right, but should never ever be left out of the sales information.

I think the mod is actually more attractive than the original eye-shape. Although, it does need sanding, you should be able to fix the unevenness quite easily and make things beautiful and smooth again. ^_^ Hope that helped!

    15. Definitely an eye mod. I don't think it's fair to sell an sleeping head that has been opened as a regular head.

Some eye openings are done well and the head itself may cost more than new because of the eye opening. That one doesn't look fully finished though it could use some sanding. They should have disclosed that it was modded and that there was staining of the resin under he current faceup.

    16. She absolutely should have disclosed this information imho.

    17. I'm not sure if that is really staining or paint stuck in the little creases from sanding... I tried to remove the paint as much as possible, but I will probably need a small brush to get that off. ehh The eye mod It's not awful or anything but as you said, it seems unfinished... also the inner right eye and left eye are not the same... I wonder if I should bring it up to the seller and what to say to her...

    18. Ethically, you have every right to post about this transaction in the feedback section. Don't feel bad about making a post that says:

"I bought a head from ______(fill in the blank!) and I was not informed that the head I bought was not a normal open eyed head but a dreaming head that had it's eyes modded open. The modding underneath was incomplete and eneven. I feel I paid about the right price for this head, but it makes me feel that the seller is less than honest."

The seller can then write back that they really meant to tell you, or they forgot, or they had no idea...but leave it up to them to explain. I'd hate to think this seller intentionally misleads buyers, but if they do the rest of us should be warned. :abambi: Every seller takes a risk that they will be exposed as less than honest when they commit a minor fraud. $110 may not be a lot in this hobby, but it's your money and you could have spent it on the head you wanted and gotten one in perfect condition.
