Volks LA Dolpa SD16 Release- Ruby and Garnet

Sep 15, 2007

    1. I was surprised in the beginning too, but I really like the sculpt of this "jewels" !!! I like them both, but I think it will be difficult for me to even get one, as they are for the US dollpa...
I think they both have a great potential !!!

    2. Wow, those two are gorgeous, I especially like Ruby, and her faceup is amazing!

    3. Wow, they look like fashion royalty dolls, I am feeling disappointed now. I was hoping for something much better.

    4. They're kinda creepy looking. Their necks are strangely longer-looking than usual dolls. I think they look weird because their facial structure is shaped differently. The white one looks like a girl who'd make fun of me if we went to high school together. ._.'

    5. I don't think these look tthat much different from SSD 16 Olivia or Amelia, obviously the lips are different, but then if you look at the recent Osaka (??)Cristal SD13, Volks seems to be playing around with the facial features. In fact, on their web site they described Cristal's lips as "duck like" which really cracked me up. Perhaps in Japan having duck lips is considered desireable?

What happened to the SD16 boys? I have Yukinojo, and would like another in that size, and while I'm making a wish list, what about some SD16 boys clothes?

    6. I like Garnet; Ruby instead seems to me too different from the other Volks dolls that I used to love, even though the skintone is a very interesting idea.

    7. I agree that Volks may be considering the fashion doll market here, and trying to introduce them to BJDs... but I think the reason some of us are disappointed, is that some of the BJD collectors don't have any interest in fashion dolls, and we've come to expect "BJD" style dolls from Volks. They may be gaining customers from one market, but losing them from the market they've always been dedicated to.

    8. I must say I'd love to have these girls sitting along side my Madoka. I guess we all have different view of our dolls. I don't see "fashion model", I just see 2 beautiful and stunning "jewels", a step more mature looking than my Amelia. only going by their photos and then looking at Amelia, her neck is as long as the the Jewel doll's. I don't see any notes that the SD16 bodies have been modified for these two dolls. It did take me a bit to get used to Amelia's SD16 body, but now I don't view her any differently than the my SD10s and SD13s except for shoe size. - Barb in MA

    9. I'm afraid I'm in the negative camp as well. I was actually relieved when I found out they were releasing SD 16 girls as I don't like them. I was afraid for the US Dolpa they would release a doll even cuter than Kurumi (although I'm sure how that's humanly possible).

They look like oversized Barbies, even the hand poses remind me of Barbie.

I'm just disappointed that this seems to be what Volks thinks Americans want. I'm sure they're lovely and they'll have fans but I'm not going to be one.

    10. Their makeups are near to human's. It's very interesting to see.
Some Volks artists do "real" makeups on dolls. I oftem see recent One-Off Models have makeups that are seen in magazines for humans, not "make-up for doll".
I estimate there of Garnet and Ruby highly :) I see the challenge in them. They are dolls, so has make-ups that are suitable for dolls, but at the same time, they are so real in someway and it must be difficult. In person I feel if they were sold in Japan, they won't be sold so well, but Volks does it in USA...I suppose Volks thought USA people have ability and sensitivity to receive even if Volks did such a big challenge.

    11. There's also the possibility that the volks pictures don't do them justice just like a lot of other dolls

    12. I love these two and wish I could go to LA to buy one. Maybe they will offer an SD16 in NY next year! I love my Olivia and Yukinojo. I don't see these two as fashion models either. They are lovely, but that is what is so great about this hobby, there are dolls to suit all tastes. Thanks for starting this thread.

    13. :barf I don't like them at alll

    14. If I would choose one out of the two....I would like to get my hands on a Ruby.

Having come to BJDs via fashion dolls....I do tend to like most of the westernized/realistic ones. Yes, Volks probably is trying to appeal to the fashion doll crowd. Having said that....there are still several of the regular Volks in my BJD family....but I absolutely my ADORE Olivia and Yuki. I do wish Volks had given the option of this 'type' or Masha 'type' at the NYC event. Maybe next time....there are more 'jewel' stones....LOL.

I have to smile when reading posts about 'BJD' style and 'fashion doll' style. All of my dolls/BJDs all wear clothing/fashions. The clothes for them cost more than mine and look better too. :)

Volks knows somebody will like them. We all know they will keep making more....they want all our money whether from BJD or fashion admirers....LOL. I think we are all lucky to have so many choices.

      .

    15. I'm another vote for not crazy about them. :( I won't be able to make the LA Dolpa, but I've been anxious to see the exclusives. It's interesting, because after Olivia was released for the NYC Dolpa in '06, I wondered if the more "fashiony" dolls would be exclusives for the NYC parties, since those are co-hosted by FDQ. If that was true, I thought perhaps the more traditional Volks dolls would be released at the west coast dolpas. Then this year, we had Masha at NYC and these two are coming out for LA. If it hadn't been for the Masha release, I have to admit I'd be a little worried. :sweat The trend has moved towards more realistic, fashion influenced dolls, but I love chunky little SDs, MSDs, and Yos. :)

    16. New pics of Garnet definitely make me want to turn her into a boy even more. I hated Olivia when she came out, and still rather dislike her to this day, but I adore my Olivia boy.

But with how hard it's going to be to obtain one for retail price, *sighs* I personally wish we had gotten these two in NY and that Masha was saved for LA. Masha does absolutely nothing for me :barf

    17. Totally agree. I really didn't like Masha - still don't, even with repaints. She looks too much like a boy for me and that she has "large head syndrome" on that body. Ick. I actually like the SD16 body a LOT and think Ruby's head will be gorgeous with a re-paint. Garnet has too strong a jawline for me though. I'm glad we've been getting the SD16 girls in America because man import fees on these big beauties is killer.

    18. They are not my cup of tea but Ruby kinda reminds me of the singer Rihanna. ^ ^

    19. Well, I have a thing for lady dolls and LOVE both of these girls. I am hoping someone can get me Ruby...although I think the picture of Garnet in the white wig is lovely.

    20. I'm a wee bit disappointed with Garnet and Ruby as well... the difference between them and Olivia and Amelia is a bit stark @_@
