Volks LA Dolpa SD16 Release- Ruby and Garnet

Sep 15, 2007

    1. When I first saw Garnet and Ruby, the first thought in my head was "that's a MAN, baby." I was not that excited.

Now, after seeing them with different face-ups, I have to say that Ruby is stunningly gorgeous. Seeing her with Halle-Berry-as-Catwoman-hair and softer makeup did a lot to change my mind about her. As there's no way that I can make it to LA after Thanksgiving short of a free plane ticket or something, I'm pretty sure that she won't make it home here, but she's awfully pretty. I hope we see more of that beautiful new skin!

Garnet also cleans up nicely with different hair and makeup. I prefer Ruby, though.

I wonder if Volks chose to post these new pictures after what must've been a disappointing initial response?

    2. I rather like Garnet, she's really pretty in a darker style. I wouldn't get her though, she doesn't fit any of my doll plans lol.

    3. I knew I'd end up loving Ruby with a new faceup. I liked her before...now I really like her! Darn it. I have no budget for new dolls.

    4. I actually like them. I have always liked many different types of dolls and I like fashion dolls too. I guess I am pretty open and lenient with companies. They want to explore and do something new, more power to them!

I am surprised by people's reactions though...I mean if I don't like something then I say I don't like it, but I don't make barf faces and say I hate it! I mean really, it is a doll. Don't like then don't buy it. I just wish people weren't so harsh in their showing of distaste. It just seems a little extreme to me I guess.

    5. They really don't seem that far a departure from the last round of FCS heads. I'm sure Volks will swing around and put out more traditional SD16 girls next year, the same way they did with Yukinojo and Reisner.

Ruby looks so much older than 16. I'm sure there will be amazing repaints done. I'm not hot for either outfit, though. It looks like they put their kimono on backwards.

    6. thank you NabeeRain, I could not have found the words to say it better.

    7. I agree, I think they are both beautiful, in their own way. I've always thought that the old expression is very true......variety is the spice of life. I see nothing wrong with something new and different. It's actually somewhat exciting..........can't wait to see what they come up with next! Wish I could go.......oh well, maybe next year, as their new designs have made me more interested! Linda

    8. I said it once and I'll say it again, I'm a bit disapointed in these girls, but mostly relieved that they are just not for me:sweat I was never into the fashion doll faces, just a bit to non-feminine for me... But this is great, since I really couldn't afford to fall in love with a 3rd doll this month:|.....

Amelia is still the most beautiful and feminine SD16 girl to date in my book, and I really hope it stays that way for some time, or at least until I can aford a few more dolls:sweat

    9. *If* I manage to get the amount, can someone in the US help me to get Garnet ? :?

    10. Ooh, ugh ugh ugh! They both look like they REALLY love Restylane (I think that's how you spell it) lip injections. I think if they toned the lips down, though, they could be lovely.

    11. I think the reason people have been so vocal about their disappointment is because most of us have come to love Volks dolls the way they are, and because of the limited number of US dolpas we were hoping for something more widely appealing. Instead they use the US dolpas to try something new to target fashion doll audiences. As Volks enthusiasts, we had hoped that something much more Volks-ish would be available to us at a Dolpa. They can always use HauteDoll or FDQ to sell these girls to fashion doll lovers... but the Dolpas... I don't know how to really say it. There are so many dolpas in Japan with so many incredible LEs... we just wanted something a little more targeted at US.

    12. I LOVE Ruby. She is a bit fashion doll like but I am just so happy to see Volks doing a doll of color. I think she is beautiful and if I could afford it I would buy her in an instant. She could fit so many characters in my head. I am not crazy about the main face up but love the variations in the photo album. I do not really care for Garnet but I appreciate the fact that Volks is experimenting. Maybe next time people who don't like these girls will love the next experiment! :).

    13. I think a wonderful company like Volks stays healthy by trying new things, and these new girls are a sign of that health. Having said that, I perfer the old molds and sweet faces. I have Mimi and Megu and Anais...little Mika and the F-06 and F-03 msd girls. Those are the girls who make me smile when I see them every day. The new girls are fascinating to look at in other people's photos....and there was one Masha repaint that knocked my socks off...can't remember who owns her, but the photos were sort of topless Victorian...stunning. But I'll stick with the classic Volks look, myself.

    14. Hi all! It's been a loooong time since I had posted. I had slightly fallen out of the loop with the BJD community and since I have come back, there are so many new dolls, companies, and changes (oh my!). I apologize if this is in the wrong area!

Since seeing the new SD16s, especially Garnet, I have fallen back in love with the thought of bringing new faces into my home and spoiling them rotten. :) My question is- how do I go about acquiring Garnet? I do not live in the LA area, though I do know some people who do. Could I possibly preorder her online? What to do?! :*(

    15. Welcome back to the loop! :) I've moved your thread to the Larger Dolls subforum, as you're asking about getting Garnet. Check out the thread on the LA Dolpa in the News/ Event chat subforum. That's where she'll be released, and I'm sure there's lots of talk of her. Good luck! :)

    16. I'm pretty sure the two different SD16s are only gonna only be sold at the LA Dolls Party. :(

But mostlikely she will pop up all over Ebay. They are always a good deal more expensive though. If you know people in LA maybe they will buy her for you? :o

    17. If you post a WTB thread you may be able to get someone to get her for you who is going to Dolpha. I did that with Masha in New York, I got one for Marti after seeing her WTB thread. You could express your interest in the LA Dolpha thread as well as in the marketplace

    18. Garnet is prettier but I agree. They like similar to Barbie... but I agree with merangel... this ones look more mature than other faces I've seen...

    19. Umm, that's more than a little offensive, as some of us real people have naturally large lips. I happen to think both dolls are lovely but especially the darker skinner girl (Garnet?)

    20. Way too barbie-ish for me. :barf

But with some sanding, I think Garnet would make a handsome man-doll.

I'd trade one of my arms for just her head for that reson.
