Was your first BJD "your style?"

Jan 10, 2018

    1. I always thought my first doll would be a more realistic one. I really liked iplehouse and soom when I was younger. But when I finally made the decision to purchase a doll I decided to go for a volks kun (who was almost the exact opposite to my usual “style”) I love her a lot and it never regret buying her :)

    2. Kind of? Looking back, she was/is the kind of doll I like. I just didn't click with her.

    3. When I saw LoongSoul’s yun zhong jun, I fell in love immediately, and that’s the doll got me into bjd. But the first doll I get is LoongSoul’ bi yue wu. I don’t remember my exact thinking process then, because I totally could just have purchased yun zhong jun xD Anyway, I purchased yun zhong jun last December and now I’m still waiting for him. I love them both~

    4. Gosh, thanks for sharing this question. My first BJD was definitely not my overall "aesthetic" at all but she fit the budget and was really pretty in the promo photos. She arrived 3 months later and of course, I thought she was cute, but then I stumbled upon a Doll Leaves Yoko In stock and DDE. She arrived 2 weeks after I got my very very first one - and it was game over. That was and still is my very first BJD love. I sold the original first because I had zero connection with her by then.

    5. She wasn’t…NOT my type, I guess? She was a Resinsoul Mei, mostly bought because she was the option I liked best within my then-student budget. I still think the sculpt is pretty enough, but I wish I’d waited and saved for one that really captured my heart.

Now I prefer mature tinies, and dolls that are a bit more stylized than the generic, semi-realistic look that’s so widespread. Not quite as off-the-wall as, say, Popovy or the more exaggerated Doll Chateau sculpts. But somewhere in the middle, between that and my first.

    6. I "bumped into" bjds when visiting a friend. Thought they were lovely (Elfdoll girls) & she was mad to spend that kind of money...didn't research the subject but began to learn more about them while visiting my friend who then offered me a great deal on a less fancy bjd (Dollinian).
      13 yrs later that dolls still with me. We've both evolved, me learning, she becoming a more specific character. She's inspired me to do costume history & construction research to dress her which was my only rationalization when originally deciding I'd like a bjd. And finding the dolls to go with her got me to do all the research about bjds that other folks did before they started. ;}
So, an affordable doll for historical sewing that has a natural aesthetic... hmm, I guess you could say she is what I'd expect if myself. XD
Meanwhile, my second was a second hand Volks SD10 girl. I saw her fs at my first big meetup & I'd swear there was a magical glow to her. <3 I couldn't spend the money but another friend surprised me by buying her & then offering to trade her to me for sewing commissions! She has a simple, gentle faceup & small anime facial features in a big ol'round head and she doesn't fit with any of my other dolls!?! But 12 yrs later I still have her & love that inexplicable magic of her.
But if I'd been studying ahead & making plans neither doll would have been on my wish list. I admired other fancy dolls my friends collected & would have jumped at the chance to own many of them but then would have been afraid of actually doing anything with them besides putting them on display...so these two are in fact perfect for me to enjoy in an everyday way. <3

    7. Actually my first bjd dictated the style I would end up with for all future dolls. Before I bought my first bjd I thought I wanted to have fantasy characters and dress them in elven style clothes, which I believed I would be making myself. However, my first boy ended up in jeans and tee shirt. I felt so comfortable with that look, that I stuck with it and continue that style for all my dolls. So instead of a bunch of elves, I have a bunch of modern street kids. :)

    8. I don’t really have a style- I like both luts and Dollfie dream the most so I guess I’m just indecisive! *_*

    9. Hmm! I got into bjds about a decade ago, and at one point I was extremely obsessed with LeekeWorld's Mikhaila, because she fit my aesthetics at the time, especially with the body she came with! I loved her wide hips. I was so certain at the time that if I were to ever be able to get a bjd, it'd be a female sculpt for sure - because I just love the variety of pretty sculpts and pretty dresses etc. Male sculpts never caught my eye then. I had also never ventured past 1/4 sized sculpts, reason as above.

Fast forward to post-uni, suddenly I got myself two 65cm and 68cm male dolls one after another in a span of a month HAHAHA so in that sense I'd say no, these two weren't "my style" - or what me in the past felt adamant and super sure the me in the future would be getting back then, but they're definitely very loved by the 'me' now. :XD::XD:

    10. Hello !!! My first bjd was so bad for me . I purchased a vinyl bjd an angel philia Emmy . From the pictures was so cute and beautiful . But after I received her , I could not hold her , touch her ,just nothing . Even her face paint for me was so bad . I regret it and after one day I just sold her . I never regret it . The person who ought her from me, sold her too after two weeks of having her the second bjd was minifee Ingrid and I felt in love with everything from this brand . After this , I started buying everything from fairyland . Minifee Sia , minifee Dina , minifee Carol ,minifee Lucywen ,pukifee Ante and feeple60 carol . unfortunately I do not know how to upload pictures to show you .

    11. Kind of? My first doll was a Mystic Kids Francis whom I named Riley, and his "style" is like this little rich boy who finds and befriends a fairy in the woods. (My second doll is the fairy lol) The only thing that I'd say that doesn't fit my "style" is his wig. I've gone through multiple wigs for him and can't quite find one that fits. Especially when I had art that I've drawn of him/his hair that sets a kind of expectation.

    12. Oh definitely! My first doll was a Doll Chateau Enoch fullset - I originally thought my first bjd would be a more "realistic" looking SD size boy to be honest since I loved the ones I saw other people owned - but everything about Enoch is just perfectly ~me~: I love his spindly proportions, his solemn little face and the whole gothic/vintage circus clown theme made getting the fullset so worth it because he looked perfect next to my non-bjd dolls right out of the box. (Although I still want to get him some different clothes and a wig eventually though, along with some proper shoes, haha)

Its also caused an odd problem: since he's basically my ideal doll, I'm not sure what to do about companions for him. I want the next doll I get to match him aesthetically and I really like the 1/3 size boys, which is proving to be a hard set of qualities to find in one doll....I really want some more lanky beeg bois:atremblin

    13. My style is minifee ingrid Dina doe fullset and everything from fairyland with fantasy parts and colourful clothes as lucywen and pale clothes as carol .

    14. My first BJD was not my style. She was too realistic. I prefer more anime-style BJDs now.

    15. My first is going to be Vine from Dream Valley. I am a very nervous buyer, so I was fussing over what doll I wanted to be my first doll for probably almost two months. Originally I was going to get something from Fairyland, as I have seen a lot of their stuff in person and they have a lot of absolutely stunning dolls, but ended up being lured more toward Dream Valley's stuff and finding myself really liking a lot of it. I saw Vine a lot usually in passing and I wrote him off as not a doll that I would like, but after a few weeks of constantly looking at their stuff, I decided to give him a proper look and something just clicked with me and I fell in love with the doll. I loved his face, his hands, the body, it checked boxes I had not even realized I had.

I ended up looking more into him specifically, watching a few unboxing videos, both with the face-up and without, and looked at photos professionally done and unprofessional, and I just ended up wanting the doll even more. I decided he would be my first, and I cannot wait for him to arrive! I think looking around as much as I did has pretty much cemented for me that I prefer more fantasy-oriented dolls. I love models with horns, wings, animal features, things like that and I had no idea until I took the time to really get into thinking about what I personally wanted rather than what I was used to. I really should not be surprised given I am a lover of fantasy, but here we are! And now I am fussing over what my second pick will be.

    16. My first BJD was the anime style. It's completely changed since then, at least in my opinion! Most of my dolls are Minifee and Narae, and I've opted for realistic faceups. I still enjoy my original style, but lately I've found realistic bjd more appealing!

    17. My first ever doll was my minifee Mio and that's exactly the type of doll I would expect from myself! They're a beautiful sculpt and I am obsessed with how big her eyes are. I literally just saw the blank sculpt face and went "yupp I need this doll" and that's how Kailani ended up in my collection and has been a favorite ever since I got her! She's exactly my type of style because I've themed her to be super fantasy and it just works with her sculpt really well!

    18. For the longest time I expected to get a 40cm JID from Iplehouse. And when I mean the longest time I mean 10+ years. Literally from the year that JID was released till recently. However my first doll actually became 70cm Loongsoul doll. Vastly different concept too. From young boy style to full adult in ancient chinese style. I cannot say how the change occurred but I sure dont regret the change.

    19. It took me a while to realize that what I like and what I like to create are very different.

My first doll was a DC and she was an alien, then there was my DZ boy who was horror-themed (both of which I sold off), and finally I got my Luts boy, who is a changeling. It was the first moment that I really thought, "Oh this is what I'm about!" I got my RS boy next, who was purely contemporary (he was a youtuber for scary/horror content), and it clicked even more. My SD crew are pretty much urban fantasy all the way through with some rural fantasy mixed in.

So I guess I'd call my style light fantasy with contemporary and paranormal elements? I'm still excited about anime-sculpts and I still want to practice so I can get good enough to make the stuff in mind a reality, so I guess I'll see if there's another facet of my personality that comes out through that.

    20. My first bjd was Ringdoll Lucifer, and I got him because I really loved the versatility of the sculpt and how different he could look through the customisation and characterization of BJD owners around the world. It ranged from fantasy to dark emo. However, when I finally had him in my hands, I was so overwhelmed with him and his full set outfit, that I felt really lost as to what to do with him.

Eventually sold him away and got around to liking Korean style fashion, the same way many Korean BJD owners would style their dolls! Got myself sculpts from Korean brands too — Switch, Prime Frame, Lemoon, etc!
