Was your first doll a doll you wanted?

Jul 22, 2017

    1. Well, yeah, I generally don't buy stuff I don't want LOL

    2. I'm gonna say.... No, on this one. xD My first doll was a really odd sized YoSD that I basically ended up getting because she was cheap? and I did like her a lot, but ultimately I would have preferred something else, and I ended up gifting her to a friend! She's very well loved there, so at least I found her a home LOL

    3. My first doll is an HZ Boss and I knew I wanted him when I first saw him! I just jumped in feet first into this hobby with an SD doll

    4. My first doll was one that I definitely wanted (Kid Delf Cherry) and from a company (Luts) I love but I wouldn't say she was my first choice. I chose her because her size was less intimidating than an SD but big enough I could still easily customize her. She was also more affordable, since my boyfriend at the time and my mom agreed to help me buy her for my birthday, instead of something more expensive like an Iplehouse Freezia or a Dream of Doll Ducan. I don't regret my decision and I feel like my doll was a really good doll to start with especially after learning about how little pose-ability iplehouse dolls have. Kinda bummed I missed out on Freezia but SD size dolls aren't for me anyway lol

    5. He absolutely was. :) The only thing is I wished that he had his original faceup, but I was more than happy to give him one myself and make him my own. I have two grail dolls and my first one was one of them! ...And he's actually still my only doll too, haha. I'm glad I went with him too because he's a perfectly manageable size, and he sits really comfortably on my entertainment stand~

I would've regretted buying a different one, even though my little guy was more expensive than I was hoping to spend initially. But the he was well worth the price. <3

    6. I'd wanted the Luts Lemon since my friend first got into the hobby - one of his first dolls was a Bory - and so my parents bought her for my birthday. The first one I bought for myself, my SpiritDoll Lemongrass, was a bit more of an impulse purchase, buying him within a couple months of seeing him. If I were going back, I might tell myself to reconsider the Lemon and I wouldn't necessarily buy a similar doll again, but now I think I'm stable with her character and look.

    7. um no honestly. I actually wanted a Mystic Kids bjd as my first doll but because of short budget I decided to purchase a cheaper doll and I have to say I did not regret buying her at all ^_^ My first doll is my Mirodoll Lili <3

    8. The answer varies between people but in my case, my first completed doll was what I wanted and I am still very happy! If you are literally talking about my first blank doll purchase, then not quite because after a while, I found the sculpt not suitable to my character so since then I have been storing the blank head in the box.

    9. oh nooo. my first bjd was not a doll what i want xD, but i dont must waiting for her, because she was a second hand doll.
I dont do anything with her, because i dislike her sculpt :/

    10. Interesting question.

I actually think it is best to try out cheaper or smaller dolls first, especially if you've never seen or handled BJDs in person before, but not just for the sake of it. If there are dolls that fit that criteria that you really like, then going for those first is a good idea, but it's not a good idea to go for dolls that you aren't really excited about.

I'm basing this on my own experience of buying a BJD before I had any idea what they were like in person, and I ended up not really liking the first one I ordered as a result. It would have been better for me to go for something smaller and cheaper rather than spending so much money on one that I didn't bond with. However I did think that I really wanted it at the time, so there wasn't really any way for me to have known that I wouldn't be into that doll without trying... It's all a learning experience I guess.

Basically I think starting out cautiously is wise providing there's a suitable candidate for it.

    11. I am still in the process of buying but I hope whatever doll I get is the one and not a doll I will dislike overtime.

    12. No, not at all. This was mostly my fault, however, as at the time I was very new to the hobby, and didn't do much research into the company, nor the size of the doll I had chosen. I didn't know what a slim mini was at the time, which made things even more frustrating for newbie-me, since nothing I bought fit her, and to boot she arrived so badly strung I couldn't get her to even sit, let alone stand.

    13. The first doll I ever saw a picture of was elfgutz's Switch Shiho, Comet. I was like "I want the same sculpt as the first bjd I saw" but I waited and saved up and I realized I wanted a different sculpt for my character because he's East Asian and I wanted the sculpt to reflect that. Then I saw Luts' Delf Jun Ha and he was the second bjd I wanted. I bought him and love him to pieces. So I didn't end up getting the first bjd I wanted, but it wasn't because of cost, it was because I changed my mind about what I wanted (even though the Jun Ha is cheaper than the Shiho).

    14. It was a bit of both. I definitely wanted my first doll and still have him. He was also on the lower end of costs as well. About the only decision I made to determine if the hobby was for me was to order from a company/artist that had fast shipping. I thought if I waited months for my first doll that I might loose interest. I was going through a bit of a tough time at that moment and honestly the hobby helped give me something positive to focus on.

    15. Was she the doll I'd wanted for years and years? No. That doll was sadly discontinued, and I'm not sure she was particularly popular. Does she look a bit similar? Oh yeah, definitely. I didn't mean to do that, I just made a list of dolls I quite liked that I could afford and she was in stock somewhere. Knowing what I do now, I'm glad things worked out the way they did! The girl I got posed pretty well (that's partially why I chose her), and showed me what these dolls are capable of so that I was prepared to really work on my second doll when she really fought with me.

    16. I spent months just looking at dolls and was pretty firm on my love the Luts Ani. So when my husband said I could get him as a wedding gift, I was over the moon and new this was going to be my first doll. Though, due to some confusion over boy/girl/same face/different body I mistakenly ordered the boy, when I thought I was ordering a girl version. By then it was too late to fix but I was so excited to be getting my doll, that I wasn't really too bothered by my little mixup. It's been about 6 years and I still have Icarus.

    17. No. The first doll I purchased was an Esthy Peroth. Turns out I just liked the head because one of the members in our local community has a gorgeous and lovable character for the sculpt. I love her character, not the doll, so I ended up selling him.

    18. For me, I let the doll choose me, though i was only worried about the head fitting a character that I have, so as long as it fit my character then I was really happy with it, and I did end up finding a doll head that fit my character.

    19. Heck, YEAH! Why would anyone buy a doll they don't like? Even the less expensive dolls are pricey, so to me, it would make no sense whatsoever to buy a doll I did not simply adore. I still have him, almost ten years later.

    20. For my first doll I bought exactly what I wanted down to the $60 resin eyes. I loved Souldoll Lupinus and DOT bodies. So I got both brand new with bank transfers to Korea, borrowed some tools and a mask from my dad, and modified away. First doll (pretty pricey when added all up), first hybrid, first mod, first faceup with heavy blushing to match resin all at once. The thing I wouldn't spend money on was clothes and shoes. Llew and then Fox, my Dollshe Husky, also exactly what I wanted, dressed like crap for the next several years XD
I still have Llewelyn (and Fox) and still love him, yet now I definitely see inexpensive dolls and impulse buy, decide against hybrids because I'll have to mod them, have some <$10 acrylic eyes in a few of my dolls, and would never go through the hassle of a bank transfer (PayPal is the only way to get my money.) Oddly, I now will spend as much money on clothes as I spend on some dolls.
