Weird question... Floating bodies, anyone? :D

Sep 18, 2015

    1. Okay, lots of people on here talk about floating heads, heads that they bought because they really like the sculpt, and for various reasons have so far only acquired the head.

However, I can't recall ever seeing any posts where someone has mentioned having floating bodies, which made me really curious. Do any of you have what would be termed floating bodies? By that I mean a body/bodies that you purchased without already having a head waiting for it.

For example, maybe you collect a lot of Volks dolls, and you are a real fan of their SDC body. So if you see one for sale in the Marketplace for a good price, you'll buy it even though at this point in time you don't have any dolls or floating heads that need it. Basically, you've bought it because it's the type of body you prefer, you know that they can be hard to find, and you know that at some point you will probably need this body for a new doll or head that you will buy.

So, do any of you have any floating bodies?..... or am I the only person who would do something like that? ^_^

    2. Actually, I do. I wanted a Doll Family A event head and the only way I could get it was to order a body. But none of the bodies available fit the head I coveted! So I just ordered any body figuring if I couldn't use it, I could sell it. However I've been too lazy so far to put it up for sale so here it lies in its box.

    3. Yep. I had a floating bod... I bought it thinking I'd put one particular head on it, only to have that head's resin not match. At all. So... that head got another bod, while the now-headless original Mister Body stuck around. I only got around to finding it a proper head of its own a few days ago.

    4. I have SO MANY floating bodies.

Ironically, I also have SO MANY floating heads. And some of them even match some of the bodies I have. They're just not intended to go together in my mindspace.

    5. I probably will eventually. I find bodies I like a lot easier than I do heads.

    6. my 8yr hiatus away from the hobby ended with a granado body in sunshine that was going to be my studio model. then i realize he needed a head. then I saw a zaoll body at a good price... many floating heads and a few complete dolls later, finally granado got his head maybe 2 months ago? a zaoll head just cleared customs today according to tracking info. finally, i just put together a headless hybrid-hybrid body that arrived yesterday. so yeah, floating bodies, just not nearly as many as floating heads. ;)

    7. I bought a Soom little gem body and Soom Cheshire parts off the marketplace late last year. It didn't get a head until recently this year.

Also if I find a body at a lower price, chances are I'm going to buy it.

    8. I've got one floating body at the moment, yes; it wasn't purchased as one, but became one when I decided I wanted a slightly different look for the doll originally shelled with it. The head stayed with the character and went to a new body, and the body... just kind of hangs out on a shelf right now. I haven't wanted to sell it off because, thanks to some tweaks I made, it's a decently solid body, and I have plans for a head for it in the not too distant future. Until then, though, it's going to float around back there.

I had a second floating body that I debated on selling, finally listed, and then pulled off the marketplace when I finally decided I really didn't want to sell it off after all. So I found an inexpensive but cute event head to go with it, instead, because I'm trying to limit my floating parts. :sweat

    9. I only have floating heads, because I never actually bought one. They came as freebies with dolls I bought.

    10. It's happened to me a few times.
1 ooh look at that beautiful head! Let's buy it.
2 this body should work with beautiful head. Let's buy it!
3 damn, body and head don't work.
4 now have 1 floating head and 1 floating body
5 buy variety of heads and bodies and keep hoping for combinations that appeal......
6 keep intending to sell ones that don't work....
7 ooh look at that beautiful head in a completely different size.....

    11. I have a 'floating body' right now lol... because a head I bought to be a boy originally might be turning into a girl (?) so his body is left over. But This really is no problem because I am sure I'm going to buy many more heads in my BJD time. I do have a floating head already but I'm not sure that I want him on the SD13 sized body that is headless right now, rather than an SD17 sized one... we'll see.

If I found a great deal on a body I love, I'd snatch it up even without having a head for it.

    12. I did for a while until I somehow acquired 3 new boy heads, laugh. I had a floating Minimee body that was pretty much a NS-Y and that never seemed to fit any boy head I acquired. First head was bought for that body but didn't match it well for skin color. The lighting in the photo made it look more NS-Y but it was actually closer to NS-P but had yellowed a bit. Not enough of a match unfortunately to make it work. Second head fit the neck but it was still a bit too pink and it looked oddly small on it for all that the neck worked. The body was just too mature for it and a bit too NS-Y besides. Third head matches the body well color-wise but the neck on the body is really too big for it. I did think about doing a mod on that, but in the end I decided to go with a yellowed white body that I found that is smaller framed and that looks like it might work color-wise okay with some blushing. Third head is very NS-Y, almost a butter color, very small, much smaller than I thought it would be. The yellowed WS body actually looks like it might match better to me size-wise and color-wise. Right now I'm just using that Minimee body with the two stray heads regardless, but eventually they will both get better bodies and hopefully I will find a head for it that both matches it color-wise and that fits it well. Technically it has 2 heads now, but neither one of them is a really great match.

    13. kez, this is exactly how it works.

    14. OMG! Yes!!! I have bought full dolls - head and body - that looked fine in the pictures and when I get them (in my opinion) the head looks way too small even after putting on the fullest wig I can find! I've also ordered heads that are being discontinued and never do find just the right body either color or sizewise! I've always got floating heads and bodies!!!

    15. Yup, it's happened a few times, though their heads usually came fairly quickly after. At the moment I DO have a "floating body", my DollnDoll King that came home earlier this month. He's such a cutie and I know exactly what head I want for him-a DiM Marcellina. I have to admit, the temptation is soooo strong to just say screw it and order his head, especially since DiM is still having their summer sale, but the adult in me is making me wait until I'm 100% sure I can pay it off completely and not just credit it.

    16. I have had a headless body twice now. The first time was because I planned a specific hybrid, then bought the body before I bought the head to take advantage of a sale price. The head didn't come long after, though, and getting the parts for the hybrid in that order was nice because I was able to sew clothing for the finished doll while I was saving up for her head. I don't think that counts as just a floating body, though; it was just a doll bought in two parts and the body got to me first, really.
The second time I did end up with a truly floating body for a bit. It was when I bought a doll not realizing how stylized she was or badly she would fit with my other dolls in person. (Her company photos made her look a lot more realistic than she was!) I tried several different faceups and modding projects on her head, but there was no way to make such a stylized sculpt work with the very realistic dolls I prefer. I really like the body sculpt, but I eventually gave up on the head and the character, and the body hung out for quite some time before I decided which of the dolls on my wishlist would work as a head hybrided onto the body. Now she's Matilda, my Islanddoll Noah girl hybrid.
I don't really see myself buying a floating body on purpose though; my collection is planned pretty specifically and I don't tend to acquire dolls just randomly or on impulse, so if I were to buy a body on its own it would be again for a very specific hybrid that I'd already planned out.

    17. I nearly did that with a minifee body, but I ended up finding a head for it at the same time after all XD so not quite, but almost!

    18. Hm... I always have floating heads!
I don't know if I will ever have floating bodies~

    19. Not at all weird...

      I had this problem:
But he now has a head on the way and I'm crossing all my fingers(even my toes, LOL)!

    20. I have one, too. I bought it intending to swap out one of my Pukifee's bodies for one that I thought would pose better, but I ended up switching back. So I use it as a sewing dummy now.

ETA - bought it used, but it's legit.
