Weird question/request(s) you got about your dolls

Apr 27, 2022

    1. So I recently had a very strange encounter on IG.

Somebody wanted to send me a dm, which I didn't see at first due to IG acting funny and hiding messages, but this person was persistent - he/she commented on my doll post twice (first with a "hello", second asking me to check my dm as this person's got a question for me,) so I was like WHAT MESSAGE and went in and check my request.

And the person was asking if he/she can buy pictures of my dolls' feet.

I was like, um ok. I know there are different interest out there, but I don't plan on selling my dolls like that, so I told the person so. And the person was persistent. This person was like, "It's good and easy money," "you just have to take pictures of your doll's feet in the position I want," and I was like, yeah, NO.

I told the person that doll collection is just my hobby and I don't plan to make money out of them, and the person (still not giving up) replied: "why not make some money out of a hobby"

At this point I was like, DUDE, A NO IS A NO.

So I told the person again, NO, and wish the person better luck elsewhere, and that person finally stopped sending any more replies.

Very strange, just very strange LOL

So now I'm curious if anyone ever received werid questions/request about your dolls? Let's open up this can of worms!

    2. That's really creepy. Sounds like someone was, uh, very invested in seeing those pictures. Perhaps monetarily but probably for another reason... :sweat

I've never gotten any creepy or weird messages about my dolls thankfully. I have had people request doll comparisons, and I'm happy to do them!

    3. The weirdest requests I’ve had:

      1. Former coworker wanted to look up my girl’s dress, and wanted me to prove my boy was actually a boy.

      2. Random person on Etsy wanted me to send them clothes for free to promote/model on their YouTube channel. I told them they were doll clothes, and apparently they were asking other people to send them free dolls. Definitely scammy.

      3. Somebody wanted me to role play my doll with them. I do role play my dolls regularly with friends’ dolls/characters, but this person wanted me to play my character with them as a person, not with their doll/character. That weirded me out because I keep my life and my dolls’ stories totally separate. Having my doll interact with a real live human is out of my comfort zone, and made me feel like they wanted my doll to fulfill some sort of personal need for them.

    4. I'm assume the doll feet person was actually trying to get human feet pics and starting with dolls because "if you're comfortable with sending doll feet then now send pics of your own feet, come on you've already invested".

Kinda like CloakedSchemer, I once had someone refuse to accept that my doll is male. I was out and about with one of my dolls that I personally see as my most "manly". Someone approached me curious about the doll and was asking about it. I don't mind this and love showing off my bjd. I referred to my doll using he/him while I showed off how there is jointing all over. The other person asked a few questions and kept referring to my doll as she/her over and over again. So finally I pulled his pants down and showed off the peen, which has a tattoo on it. The other person told me I was disgusting and left while giving me a dirty look. This particular doll is 71cm with head scars, a buzz cut, many tattoos, and the sculpt has veins on the muscles. Totally female.

I've also had a random non-hobbyist ask to buy a doll from me while I took my doll out irl, then get pissed when I told them how much bjd typically go for. That was a 1/6 doll I only have about $100 into too (secondhand).

And I've taken dolls to thrift shops. One at a time that I carry around. Twice now I've went to check out and the clerk tried to grab my doll from my arms thinking it was merchandise and not being careful at all. One of those times I was accused of trying to steal my own doll. So now when I thrift shop with a doll I always tell the person at checkout that I am carrying my own doll around when entering. :sigh

    5. With all love and respect for people's weird proclivities (and significantly less of the same for people who won't take no for an answer) there's a very funny joke in here somewhere...

"I keep trying to get someone to show me their feet, but no one will do it! Ugh... Wait a second! That's it! A doll! This solves all my problems! I'll just... try to get someone to show me their dolls' feet."

      :doh:lol:

    6. Mymother does graphics for signs, so she googles stuff to look for free or cheap images to use, like one time she found a collector of US license plates that was seriously obsessive with such and such state's plates each time they changed, in high definition.

She told me never, absolutely never google "pretty feet"

    7. I guess I'm missing out on all the weirdness. I NEVER take my dolls out anywhere. I can't imagine walking around in public with a doll, or going into a store with one. I would be terrified something would happen.

The only weird comment I ever got was a friend who saw my dolls in my room and was not convinced that my male dolls were not females. The friend didn't ask for proof, but kept calling him "her".

    8. The weirdest thing that happened to me so far with my BJD, is that some people apparently think my Limhwa Limho Mano is an actual person (outside of this hobby/forum). I used to get one person to PM me to stop posting photos of myself and tagging them "BJD" when I was positing photos of myself, according to them. Then Tumblr would block or flag my Mano's posts as "adult" content when I posted semi-or-completely-nude (but censored) photos of him. I thought it was weird, because I always came across full-frontal nude photos of other BJD, mostly female ones, some in very suggestive poses; so I found it weird that my flat-chested male BJD, was being flagged as adult, but the full-frontal female dolls weren't. Then a few years ago, one person publicly (not in a PM) commented on one of my posts containing photos of my Mano, that they always thought he was a male model I used as reference, and thought it was cool he was actually a doll and not an actual person. I was confused as how I used him as reference, because all I do is post photos of him? I don't draw, or paint portraiture of my dolls so I wasn't sure how I was using him as reference (in which way?), but then it all made sense to me. I guess on Tumblr, he can be seen to some as realistic as an actual person, despite him looking like a doll to me. AND, me tagging him as a doll, BJD, plastic toy, etc, makes some angry because they think I'm posting photos of myself instead of one of my dolls. DX

I haven't posted photos of my Mano anywhere in a long time, because I have lost interest in BJD and customizing them further (I did try, but old age and laziness wins over every time!). It has nothing to do with Tumblr, or people leaving their comments for me on there. But it was really funny to me, that somehow, he was confused for an actual person. So much so, that my photos of him semi-nude, with obvious joint everywhere (few photoshopped to have the joints removed), were mistaken for a real person and flagged as adult. Not as creepy as the feet thing OP shared (I hate human-feet, so it's even creepier to me or even gross!), but mind boggling, nonetheless. More so because I never take "sensual/sexual/suggestive" photos of my dolls, I am very much 1000% non-sexual, so it was a freaking puzzle to me how my photos of my Mano specially, always got flagged as "adult." Almost made me want to photograph him next to real life objects, but then again, I am lazy. (:

    9. That's pretty amazing actually that he's apparently so realistic that both humans and AI can't tell the difference! And it's surely a testament to your photography and photoshopping skills!

    10. I take horrendous photos actually, and that's to say the least. I always thought someone (perhaps the person who thought I was posting photos of myself, instead of a doll) was reporting my photos as "adult content," as a way to annoy, because I stopped replying to their messages after a while. However, it also happened a few times with scale figures and fashion doll bodies without a head, and there are other toys in the same photos because I hoard and post mostly hauls of toys on Tumblr. I don't unbox the bulk of my figures, so most are of figures still in box or packaging (like with a Toy Works Free! Iwatobi Swim Club figure of Makoto Tachibana in his clothes, albeit wet clothes, there was no nudity and he clearly has a cartoony face). Maybe their AI is not as reliable as they might think, or I'm a paranoid nutjob (it was just frustrating, mostly because I saw stuff on there that I wish I could pour acid on my eyes after having seen those, that just about anyone including youn children could have seen. Yet, my photos of plastic toys that were sometimes semi-nude, were being flagged. An actual human dude doing "who knows what" with his pants halfway down to a figure/doll, that's perfectly fine!). lol! DX

    11. The weirdest I got was some years ago when I got a message when I still used Photobucket, asking how much I was selling my dolls for.

When I replied, genuinely puzzled, that they weren't for sale, they were my own collection, and asked what gave them the idea my dolls were for sale, I got the angry response that if they aren't for sale why had I put pictures of them online...?

Presumably, in their world, the only reason to put puictures of anything online is for the purpose of selling it...?

    12. That's horrendous, and some of it is downright silly^^ Also, your pictures (and dolls) are stunning, period.

But it is true that the software big internet platforms use for cleaning up their images cannot tell human and doll nudity apart, at least not at the moment. That's what started all the doll censoring when really they were only out for human nudity. It's a shame, really.

    13. Y’all, I wish someone would ask to buy feet pics of my dolls! :XD: That would be easy money to buy more dolls! Lmao

the only ones I’ve ever received were literal children on Instagram demanding I send them my doll for free because “I’m an adult and have a lot of them,” and “they don’t have any.”

      • x 4
    14. I would be suspicious that they were actually adults pretending to be children, so they could get dolls for free. So weird either way.

It is SO true that on line, people know they can say or do anything and remain anonymous, so they behave in ways they would never do in person.

    15. Weirdest doll related message was a guy who said he would give me his MDD Cirno if I kissed him.

I personally would block anyone who would ask that regardless of age

    17. wow we really have some crazy stories out there!
The person was extremely invetsed in seeing the pictures for sure LOL
I mean if someone didn't reply your initial dm, then you just kind of... stop? Ok to be honest I feel like only creeps will be so persistent and went all the way to the person's post and make two comments. And have to be told NO like three times.
And that person unfollowed me after I said no, thank god cuz what a creep LOL
Glad you have not receive any weird things! This was the first time I ever receive such weird message about the dolls, I'm just like, wow, wasn't expecting that!

Hahahaha I got the doll gender confusion a lot too! People be telling me my boy dolls are super girly, well three of my boys are indeed girl's head being put on male body lol
And I can never understand people asking for free stuffs. I mean just why?
The role play request of dolls with real human is, well, never heard of it before lol Yeah, some people out there are just... having their own interest XD

Ohhhh now that you said it like that, I think it's def possible! It's easy for people to slowly escalate things like that, with some sweet talks and money and it turns into a complete nightmare.
And man, the two people you encountered were just rude lol Should ask them would they look at a Marvel male figure and call it she/her?
And the encounter in thrift store is just wild - I've been to the thrift shop with my dolls a few times, and I think the staff knew they don't get donations like that so I never had any problem, but I guess it's also because they just don't see people walking into the store with a gigantic doll in arm every single day, so they be staring at me as I enter the store lol

Hahahahaha I can totally imagine that being the case!:lol:

The fettish is real out there LOL
Personally I don't really get it... but I guess each to their own

I was once being called "strange" by a little girl seeing me doing outdoor photoshoot of my dolls, and my doll was once greeted by two (possibly homeless) men on the street, but they were very friendly and shaked my doll's hand LOL
I think having the dolls indoor can definetly avoid a lot of drama, but yep, I do get visitors wondering if my boy dolls are girls LOL

To be honest there were a few times when I'm scrolling fast on FB, I mistaken some doll pictures as real human pictures too
But upon a closer look it's pretty obvious that it's a doll not a human, really makes you wonder just what were people seeing that made them so convinced it's a real human...? If you photoshopped the joints out then I can kind of see why, but when there are joints everywhere, just how and why lol
Internet is a weird place for sure... I'm not on tumblr, but I've heard some pretty weird censored stories across different platforms.

I can only think of it as "the world is big, and the internet is full of weird people"
I hope those people won't be messaging every picture they are interested in buying, imagine the rage they must have been through with all the people not selling the items in their online picture :lol:

Hahahahahaha I should refer that person to you :lol: Only if i'm not getting a very strong creep vibe from that person :lol:

Yeah, idk why people out there be thinking they can just ask for dolls for free... Like, would you be going around places and ask people to give their car to you for free!?

Oh no. Just hell no. Should report that guy to the police. :barf

    18. I had an adult ask me that once. She told me it "wasn't fair" that I had so many and she only had one, so I should give her a few. I worked hard and budgeted for all of my dolls, nobody was just giving them to me, so why should I be obligated to give them to someone else?? I kind of slowly cut ties with her after that.

    19. Omg, the feet pics thing is so creepy! But also really funny :XD:

Not a weird request, but a weird comment-
My father-in-law came to visit since he hadn't seen our apartment since we moved. I was at work, but my spouse said that FIL looked into my room, saw my dolls, and said, "That's wild!" and then walked out. LOL.

    20. Reading this thread I sort of feel thankful I haven’t had any weird comments on my Instagram yet; the only request I’ve gotten so far is from my bf and it’s basically if I’m not using them to keep the dolls in a box or something as they freak him out
