What amount is "too much" for clothes?

Oct 15, 2015

    1. I tried looking this up and I don't think there's one that goes along the lines of what I'm talking about... so here I go:

If you can't sew like me or just want nice clothes for your doll, how much are you willing to spend for their clothing?

I'm guilty of admitting I spent almost $300+ on clothes alone just for my boy. I could have bought another doll with that money LOL, but would I rather have a naked doll? I think I got his wardrobe completed so I'm not really interested in buying more clothes, unless I find them appropriate for his style. Now I'm saving up for my next doll. I already bought a couple of clothes for her with the total coming up to almost $120 (Three shirts, two jean shorts, leggings, and a pair of shoes. Isn't that a steal?), and it doesn't just end there... I'm also preparing for a somewhat big order at Nine9Style that costs $250 shipped, and all of the clothes are for her too. I always save up for big purchases like these way ahead of time so I'm not crippling broke every order I make.

So if you add all those prices altogether, I've spent almost $700 on doll clothes... I have to add the fact that I always try to get them from big name companies like Nine9, Crobi, TTYA etc. and that contributes to the astronomical price tags, justified that the quality is superior compared to generic-bought clothing. But I think it's alright because I want the best for my dolls. For a super fresh doll owner who's only been in the hobby for 5 months, I feel like I overdid it though. I know the general response for this would be "it's my money, it's alright; as long as it makes you happy" but a little bit of guilt is still in my chest :atremblin.

Am I insane, or is this a normal thing that has been going on for some of you?

    2. To say the least, I am impressed with how much you really take care of your doll/s. Even going as far as buying them really expensive but good quality clothes. I don't think it's a bad thing to be spending a ton of money, as long as you have some for yourself and not just only about the dolls. The owner comes first after all because without you, who will take care of your "babies?" Secondly, I don't think its insane to spend that much money if you have it. Go for it! I will probably do the same (I currently have my eyes on some Freedom Teller clothes). Again, just don't forget about yourself (I keep reiterating this since I've heard that some people starve themselves so that they have the money to spend on dolls).

    3. @angelie23 Oh totally, I have money for myself too >< I know what you mean, I actually brought that up on a FB group and it caused a little bit of trouble on my end ahaha(I'm just genuinely worried about everyone's well-being, but I think they misinterpreted that as me being harsh and mindful of their business). I always work hard to get what I want, and I could never starve myself just for something. That just proves that if I'm going to sacrifice my health for it, I don't deserve it. But of course, everyone has different ways of coping with their problems, one being compulsive shopping(which I may have done a couple of times). I don't have anything against people who do this, as long as they have the money and aren't doing drastic measures to get what they want.

    4. It depends on the outfit, for me. If I'm getting simple clothes, like casual pants or shirts, I don't expect to pay more than I pay for my own clothes, to be quite honest, and I'll shop around to find something that meets that balance of price/quality that I'm after. However, I also have a handful of elaborate, detailed full outfits for a couple of my boys that each cost $100+, and which I feel are completely worth the price for the detail and workmanship in them.

Were I commissioning clothing, I'd base the price I expected on what I had in mind and what quality the commissioner can produce, however, I'm largely trying to make my own clothing for the specific items I have in mind instead, so that saves me some money for more of the super-fancy things.

    5. I like this, especially the last sentence. :) Really, it's a redundant thing to say but its your money. You've worked hard on earning it and now you're spending it on something you enjoy that is possibly beneficial to your well-being. You know what you want and you're not compromising your health or other people's health in the process so why not? No one should be allowed to judge you. You can only judge yourself (what's too much? Could I afford to spend so much money? etc).

Sorry, I don't really know what I'm saying (hahaha).:whee: Take it or leave it as they say. :wiggle

    6. I've spent more on clothing and accessories than I have for actual full dolls x_x
I very much consider them as part of my collection.

    7. Me too! Or well, I think that's what happening with the start of my collection anyway LOL. Doll clothes can be their own collection too, I think! I love all the clothes I bought for my boy, and they're very well-made so it's nice just admiring them even if Cyrus isn't here to model them for me LOL.

    8. @mionnaise

Definitely, quality makes all the difference! Cyrus will be spoiled once he arrives xD

    9. For me, buying the doll is just where it begins! Getting beautiful other things for them, like a quality wig, beautiful face-up, eyes, jewelry..and yes, clothes. I make my own dolls clothes, but I do spend quite a lot on getting the best materials for them, and I spend sometimes up to a year making that one perfect outfit! It's a big part of the hobby for me, looking for the perfect pieces for my doll and completing them, so it doesn't matter to me. I definitely spend more on clothes and so on than I have on that particular doll in a few cases, but it's all part of the same hobby to me. I mean, once you spend all that money on a beautiful doll, you want it to be dressed fabulously, right? :D

    10. I actually own a few pieces in my collection that are close to the price of a full doll :sweat

When I started collecting dolls I was still in school and thus my spending money was very limited.
I saved everything for getting the actual dolls, so there was not much left for anything else.
I still remember my constant struggle between saving for a doll OR a camera to actually take pictures of said dolls.
My first boy was sadly naked for a few months, and it took me even longer to get shoes for him.
I did better with my second doll, but the stuff I got for him was still pretty meh but at least he wasn't naked.

This changed when I moved out from home and got my first job.
I finally was able to get my dolls all the nice stuff I always wanted, and this just got more and more throughout the years.
If I could I would commission all their outfits, and while for the important ones this is still the case I'm also happy with high quality or good looking clothes from shops.
I'm a sucker for Freedom Teller for example and I bought the full "Green Beret" Set from Sadol a few months ago with a bunch of extra weapons

I think, just like with many other things, there is no "too much" only "what is it worth for you".
Some prices make me swallow hard too but I still pay them because to me it is worth it.
I still have some limit though, I guess I wouldn't pay more than 500$ for one outfit.
It also highly depends on the size and how complicated it is, for 500$ I would expect a huge and complicated dress with nice materials and lots of details or some male fantasy outfit with armor pieces.

This by the way also applies to wigs and eyes.
I currently aim for Unique Enchanted eyes in all my dolls with "normal" eyes and Angora wigs for everyone.
Wanting pretty dolls is suffering *_*

    11. I guess by the time I have everything for my dolls that I want for them - wigs, outfits, etc. - I'll have paid more for clothes (and other accessoires) than for the actual dolls. Cos the clothes I want will have to be commissioned (unless I can make them myself) and the same goes for quite some of the wigs. My most expensive outfits I bought, so far, were Iplehouse outfits - I have some that cost me something between 200 to 300 USD each (first time I needed layaway for an outfit). But the quality is great and since I know how difficult it is to sew doll stuff I'm more than okay with paying a lot of money for a doll outfit. My rule of thumb is: If I'm not willing to pay the asking price then I probably don't really want it all that much.

    12. Clothes cost to much for BJD, i will spend more money on their clothes then i do my own...i mean i understand as time has gone into making the products but i won't spend over $25 for one item of clothing though, (unless its unbelievably amazing and detailed and exactly what i have been wanting). If i like something and it's over that price i will make it myself, cheaper that way.

    13. It depend of the clothes, if I can I don't mind spending $50-80 in a outfit for my dolls since comes with all the pieces, that is the price I see for super detailed and quality clothes for 1/6 and 1/4. But if I buy a jeans or normal t-shirt I don't want to spend more than $20 on each. Actually the pants on rRabit are $8-9 and very good quality. So this work for me since my dolls wear alternative clothes but still styles that exist on our world, so their clothes don't need to be custom ordered. Also I'm willing to buy on taobao so clothes get cheaper but quality keep up, there a good suit that sell on LegendDoll that if you go on the official taobao shop you can buy for $35 stead of $150.

    14. that iple jacket in the auction for example is on $251 already. In real life i am a biker, i drive a motorcycle and my own biker jackt made of real leather was about $130.... any other questions? *G

    15. I think that clothing is a super important aspect of a doll's overall look. My biggest clothing order was about $100, once overseas shipping was added. That was for two lolita outfits, (and the package smelled like chocolate chip cookies when it arrived :love). I generally only have one outfit per doll, so I don't really change their clothing too often. When I have extra clothing that I don't use, I try to sell it. I have two outfits in storage right now, but I did just order two dolls, so I'm going to keep the clothing for them unless I find something else I like.

      I guess it's all about moderation. :3nodding:

    16. I spoil them, to say it bluntly. I spend more on doll clothes than on the dolls themselves. I don't enjoy a pile of naked dolls, nor do I enjoy a bunch of expensive dolls in poorly made clothing. If I'm going to invest that much money in the doll itself, I want it looking as nice as it can.

I don't think there's such a thing as a set amount that's "too much". It varies. Some people would rather have one simple outfit for each doll and have a lot of dolls. Others would rather have one doll with a huge wardrobe. I think as long as you aren't using money that needs to go to other things (bills, rent, food, caring for a pet/child) then no one has any right to tell you that you're spending 'too much' on doll clothes.

    17. I feel like I've already answered this but just in case I haven't, here goes
I don't think that's too much, as long as you're happy and have your necessities covered (and your pets/family if you have one that depends on you) then go for it.
I'm not a big spender by any means (Nadeko usually only gets 1 outfit a year) but I do spend quite a bit on Nadeko's clothes because it's really great quality. I've spent more on Nadeko's wardrobe in the not yet 3 years that I've had her than I have on clothes for myself in the past 10 years but buying her beautiful clothes makes me happy and I'm fine with what I've got. I'm sure that I could have at least bought an MSD for the amount I've spent on her clothes so far (Up to this point I've spent almost $600 on clothes for Nadeko but only one outfit has crossed the $100 mark.) but for me, collecting clothes is just as much a part of this hobby as collecting the actual dolls. I would rather have less dolls with a lot of beautiful clothes to choose from than a lot of dolls with nothing to wear.

    18. I'm still fairly new having ordered my first dolls the beginning of this year and getting them all around July, so I'm still mostly buying right now and trying to make some of my own that don't look like something I'd use to wash my car. I think it ultimately depends on the clothes. $300 for a doll t-shirt, um yeah, maybe too much on something so simple. I find what typically is in that price range is well worth it, though. Again, I'm new, so maybe my opinion doesn't hold as much water, but I see the clothes as being art as much as the bjd. Most of the time, you're paying for the quality and not just a label. That being said, I wouldn't spend that much on clothes I wear, and I typically think designer labels are a rip off, but I don't think that's the same with doll clothes. It's just perspective. Most people I know would think I'm crazy for what I spend on my dolls and many of them easily spend far more on clothes, or shoes, or drinking in a bar and other things to impress people, like a new car every year or two. My car is 9 years old and long ago paid off. I work hard, and take care of bills and other responsibilities, so if spending $300 on a doll outfit makes me happy, I have no shame in it and think it's worth it.

For me, it just depends on the quality and there are certainly clothes out there worth it and ones that aren't. I wouldn't hesitate to spend that much on something from a maker I trust. For example: I bought Angell Studios full sets Elizabeth and Victoria. I was tempted not to get the clothes, but now that I have them, I see how intricate and well made they are, so totally worth it and more. I also bought clothes with my Soul doll Clodia and it was totally worth the $230. A lot of time and work went into those outfits from design to production, and they are far superior to anything I can do. I bought clothes for Impldoll Chad so I'd have something for him to wear right away and thought the $90 seemed reasonable for the optional outfit, but was very disappointed as they didn't fit him right at all. They were also really simple. It wouldn't have been difficult to make something like it. Not worth it all, so it was too much to spend in that case.

    19. I spend about $200-$300 on each dolls' complete outfit that is specific to their character. My dolls typically have one outfit, but for the few dolls of mine that only wear jeans and a t-shirt I usually have more options for them so it evens out in the end. I think that's about the max I would consider spending, but if it was something super specific or for a character doll I'd consider spending more. It really just depends on the doll and the situation.

    20. yeah I'm the one who bought that jacket. I've been looking for that specific one forever. I am a little embarrassed to admit that I paid that much for it though.
