What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?

Dec 16, 2005

    1. You make total sense. Some dolls have droopier eyes than others; some have poutier lips, or pointier noses. A face-up is important, because it's the color and the life of your doll, but the sculpt is the basis for the doll's attitude.

    2. Yes, thank you! You said it better than I ever could XD

    3. The face/ head mold.

Although a faceup I don't like can really spoil my opinion of the mold. I'm reaaaaaaaaaaaaally picky about how my dolls look sometimes!

    4. I think I rely on a combination. If I see a blank mold, I'm never sure how they'll turn out with a face up, but I do know whether I might like it or not. However, as soon as I see different faceups for the same mold, and can see how versatile the mold can be with different styles of faceups, it usually helps me decide which ones I like best. No faceup will make me like a mold that doesn't appeal to me, but the faceups help me decide when just the blank head isn't enough.

    5. The mold. An amazing face-up on a mold I don't like isn't as pleasing to look at than a horrible face-up on a mold I love. Seriously.

    6. Head mold all the way!
If I don't like the body offered I'll find another to match :)

    7. For me, it's really a combination of both. Face-up is what attracts me to the doll, but the mold is what decides if I like it or not x3 For example... Migidoll Ryu, absolutely gorgeous, but I don't like his nose. /shrug

    8. It's a combination of both for me. The mold gives me an idea of the dolls potential look and personality and of course, the face up brings the doll to life.

    9. The head mold does it for me. I can do my own faceups, so I think it's the sculpting that really draws me in. Mind you, I do like to check out different faceups to see the potentials and pitfalls of the mold.

    10. I would say the head mold, because the faceup can be done by anyone. The mold is what really gives the doll the foundation to build on.

    11. If I see a doll that interests me one of the first things I do is try & find a picture of the blank head. It's rarely a make or break thing with me but if I don't like the bare sculpt then I'm less likely to be interested in the doll.

    12. I say the mold. I try to find pictures of the head without a face-up when I'm considering the doll.

    13. It's the mold for me. There are some dolls that are always beautiful to me regardless of the faceup, because I can imagine how they'd look with a different faceup. But... there are also some molds that I don't particularly like and that some amazing faceup artists have turned into dolls I'd love to have...

    14. The first thing that turns me on or off about a doll is the face up, seeing that usually distracts me. However if I see the doll with multiple face ups, and how I can work the doll then I begin to see and plan with that sculpt. xD

      Face ups are very distractive for me though. e.e;;

    15. The mold is the deciding factor for me, I may be attracted by a lovely faceup at first but I want to see the blank face before I take the plunge. Both my Saint and my Msdoll#3 were so beautiful without their faceups that I wasn't in a hurry to send them away for their makeup. The faceup is just the icing on the cake, it's what turns that beautiful mold into your own unique doll.

    16. I like to look at beautiful face-ups that I haven't the skill to do but I always notice the headmold and that is what I consider the most, along with body mold. I am gonna do it myself so I don't think about the face-up when looking at dolls to I'm thinking about buying.

    17. Though I don't have my dolls yet, it's the mold itself that calls to me. At first, I used to like the faceups and that was what would draw me in, but now I'm a little more experienced and have seen SO MANY MORE pictures of dolls, especially comparison shots of the same doll with different faceups, I realize that it's the mold itself that matters.

Short of modding a doll head, wide round eyes, long pointed noses and square jaws are gonna be the same regardless of what you do with the faceup. And in all honesty, I'd rather not mod a head in such a way unless it was only one tiny thing that needed changing while everything else was perfect.

    18. Faceup. I've bought several dolls based upon a seeing Y!J auction or a really nice faceup.

While a may like a mold, the faceup is what really 'sells' it to me. If I've picked out a mold I like, but haven't seen a really good faceup, I usually don't buy it.

    19. The face up. xD; I'm newer to this hobby, so I'm just really beginning to tell all the small differences between the head molds, honestly. :3 Though I'd try my hardest to see through to the mold itself, the face up usually catches my eye a bit more. :'D I try not to let it most of the time when I'm looking around, though.

    20. Head mold! The sculp is critical to the intrinsic beauty. Symmetry, balance, size, facial planes, and placement of features all contribute to the sculpt. Some molds will never be as beautiful as others, but in saying that, some collectors are not looking for that, and prefer more unusual mold.
