What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?

Dec 16, 2005

    1. Without a faceup a doll just looks... empty. I definitely like the life a good face painting brings to a doll. While some faceups look really stunning the mold underneath might be terrible so I guess I'm teetering between liking a mold or a faceup better.

I guess I'd have to say faceup because I probably would have never ordered a doll in the first place if I hadn't seen one with such beautiful facial details first.

    2. The mold as even a bad face up can be changed, but a mold not so easy to change.

    3. I try to ignore they faceup a lot, if im looking to buy because sometimes I will really like a mold but hate the default face-up (or I'm trying to imagine the kind of face-up I would give my girl/guy). If I like a face-up or I am veiwing other people dolls, I try to take they as a whole package.

Just as an FYI the things that I look for the most ina mold is the shape of the eyes and the shape of the lips.

    4. Even for some molds that I don't like, with a good faceup it can make me think twice about it, so usually the faceup is what captures me first, but I'm also really picky when it comes down to just a blank sculpt, I guess it really depends, so I'd have to pick both either way.

    5. The faceup would attract me to look at the head mold, but it's always the head mold that affects my decision to want or buy anything. Cause eventually the faceup might be ruined and it's hard to replicate it but the head mold will always stay the same

    6. Depends. I think with any doll you have to see potential in the blank head and be able to think "ok, it looks crap but with this kinda face-up he'll lok awesome"

Or for example I see an amazing doll with cool face-up, outfit, wig etc and I think to myself "would I be so intrigued by another doll if it had the exact same face-up, outfit and wig as this doll or is it the actual face that I like?"

So I guess for me I try to decide if I like a doll based on its head sculpt.

    7. In the beginning faceups had a huge importance for me to decide whether i liked the head or not. But after i got Kieran (cos i didn't like DZ much before having him) i realised that face ups can make a mold gorgeous or horrible. SO it's best to see how the head looks without faceup to see if you really like it.

Now i can id them alright without faceups and i prefer that way.

    8. Of course, the first thing that makes me want to click the pic on the doll site is the face-up... but I think I would only deicde after seeing a blank, heh.

    9. The mold. BUT I have suprised myself by like a head because of the face up. I saw a head for sale that I fell in love with but then when I started doing research on the head mold I saw that I didnt like the mold or other face ups it was just that particular face up I fell i love with . Its happen a few times now but its mostly the head mold for me.

    10. I could just collect heads without any face-up. I love the molds.

    11. I love the faceup, the glossy lips, the rosy cheeks, the eyebrows...it all seems to bring the whole thing together for me.

The combination of the Faceup and the wig if done right can make the BJD sing, so to speek :)

    12. For me it is the face-up as I think the same doll mould can have many looks.

    13. I'm not really sure where I stand.... There are some molds that I absolutely love, and will see... not "great" face ups on them, but still love the mold.

But recently I've seen a picture of a mold that I revel at and actually found myself admiring it because of the faceup.

      So I'm not sure. :/

    14. head mold for me, face up only a plus.

    15. Face-up is definitely the first thing that attracts my attention more.

There's been so many times when I thought a doll was "eh, all right" when looking at a company's website, but when I came across an owner picture I quickly fell in love with the headmold.

    16. I have to say the headmold. I just wrote an entire response about how it really depends because a good faceup can make me like a mold. But then I erased it because when it comes right down to it, I would never buy a doll if I didn't like the head sculpt. Faceups are changeable while the actual sculpt is not so much. XD

    17. I think headmolds are not the make/break for me.

      Face ups, for sure.

Because, while the head mold does give the doll a certain look, really, it's the face up that makes it your doll. Whether you get it from the place you purchased it from, did it yourself, or commissioned someone else, the face up is what REALLY gives the doll character in my opinion.

    18. Face make up XD It changes everything ^_^ But head mold is very important to XD

    19. Faceup is everything. You can make any mold look amazing with the right faceup ... and the reverse is true, you can make amazing molds look really bad with the wrong faceup.

    20. Wow . . I'm pretty much the same:3nodding: : faceup --> head mold. However, since I started getting deeper and deeper into this hobby, I've realized that even the head mold can be altered . . albeit that changes to it may be more "permanent" than a person may later like. :sweat
