What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?

Dec 16, 2005

    1. Here's what I've done. I take a look at the heads with the face-up, then I go and see if they have the blank heads available so I can see the mold. Sometimes the noses are too long or too short, or the ears are too far back, or the eye holes are too big or something.

And that's when I really decide.

That's a big part of what makes me choose one company over another. My preferences are so specific, there are some companies that have heads that I just can't relate to, and other companies are consistently attractive to me.

So, ultimately the mold, but it's hard not to get seduced by the face-up.

    2. Definitely head mold / facial sculpt ~ especially as I do my own face up's,
so I prefer seeing a head "blank" so as to better envision how a sculpt might
      best suit my character(s).

    3. Personally I think the faceup can make a doll look like an entirely different doll. When I was looking to purchase a doll ( I have only purchased one and she still isn't here) I looked at hundreds of dolls. I had a look in mind. The bad part of doll company websites is most dolls have great faceups, eyes, wigs, clothes, and a professional photographer with an incredible set. I have seen dolls I thought I liked but when I saw the doll in regular photos they were not as appealing to me. I have some faceups that made me think the doll looked horrid ( I won't mention anyone) and others I thought looked beautiful and I couldn't believe it was the same doll. Plus of course one persons perfect face up is anothers nightmare.

    4. With me, what typically attracts me is the head mould. Not much use being attracted by a faceup on a doll considering I wouldn't be able to have it. The way that a face is made up makes a world of difference though.

    5. The face up makes a huge huge difference to the head mold IMO, sowhen the face up compliments the head a lot, thats what attreacts me. ^^

    6. Ah, definitely the faceup for me! Maybe it's because I've always been into visual arts, so beautifully done painting (faceups) really catch my eye *__*. Plus, faceups always tend to add a boatload of personality... the same mold can go from innocent and sweet to dark and scary 9__9. I notice the mold afterward :D.

    7. The mold has to be right, but hte faceup can mean all the difference between whether I really take to it or not.

Mold has to have certain elements smiling/not frowning, fully open eyes, no really exagerated features etc, elf-ears for preference, but not essential.

Given all the right elements in the mold, it then has to have the type of face-up I like which is basically summarised as *subtle*. No *heavy* makeup, preferably natural colours and very little eyeshadow (as in make-up colours not shading skin-tone) if any. Fairly neutral eyebrows too, not toruned down in teh middle as a frown or down at the outer edges and up in the middle etc.

Strong/bold colours and heavy makeup can make attractive and eye-catcching statements, but isn't anything I'd want for one of my dolls. The same goes for part-closed eyes, frowning expressions and "expressive" eyebrows.

    8. Good question.

Honestly, it's hard to be sure. Face ups and head molds really have to work together. When I see a doll and she's pretty, I'll go check the user pictures here on DOA. This is so I can see the blank doll, different face-ups, posability, etc... So in the end I'm looking more at what you can do with the head mold then the face up.

But I really have to force myself to look past the face-up. I mean, a good face-up can make many a doll I wouldn't like otherwise really appealing. In the end I have to get a picture of the blank doll and photoshop myself a face-up just to make sure that the doll I have my eyes on will actually work out.

The face-up and the head mold have to be able to work together. ^_^

    9. Head mold, its really hard to do. A lot of the companies don't show pictures of the dolls without faceups. So I have to hope that someone on here already has him so I can them find a blank palate.

    10. That's tough to say o.o;; Faceups are important-but at the same time there are dolls that have bad faceups (some I've done for example) that I don't think look bad because I'm in love with the head mold ^.^;;

I know I fell in love with my Migidoll Miu head based soley on blank head sculpt photos...

But then I chose my Mo for a character based soley on the new faceup (I'm in LOVE with his sculpt now, though)....

I think for me they both really play their own roll... one can compensate for the other depending on the circumstances.

    11. It depends cause I have head molds that I absolutely love but have seen bad face ups on them... I would still buy the doll and just give them a better face up. But, I hate seeing dolls w/o face ups. So, before I decide I absolutely love a mold I look at others to see various face up possibilities.

    12. Head mold.

Cause, you can do all the facing up you want too, but it's the head mold that sticks.

And face ups, can be taken down and re-done.

Yes, you can buy other heads, but if you have a head mold you're in love with, then it's just a matter of doing the face up how you want it.

    13. the faceup is usually what initially attracts me, but I make sure to go see different kids of the same mold so I know what potential they have, so over time it's the mold and its potential.

    14. head mold. I have to see a doll with out its face up to really see if I like it since I'd be ordering mine with out face up because i can't afford the extra $$ that it would cost. plus face ups play on the face shape

    15. Head mold, when it comes down to it, but user pictures with different face-ups play a key role in my decisions, because it really reflects the different looks. I've also had head-molds that I thought I liked, but once I face-upped, I realized were not to my taste, exactly.

Both are incredibly important in deciding for me, even though I do my own face-ups. I need to see both to truly decide.

    16. The face probably first, but the body sculpt is always a decider too

    17. both for me, but with out a faceup the doll mould wouldnt really attract me as much =)

    18. The face-up is a must for me. I can love a mold, but I wouldn't love it as much as I wanted, if it didn't have a face-up. Its like a empty canvas...

    19. thats hard to say, a head mold can be very different w/ different face ups, but then, a head mold is a permeant thing and is very important. so i'd say, its a mix of both!

    20. Headmould first. Definitely.

It's like when your'e moving hosue and you look at the house without anything of your in it and you see the potential to do better things with it.

And anyway, faceups and headmoulds go hand in hand when it comes to makign the doll look the way it does.

Thing is, it's a lot easier and cheaper to change faceups...
