What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?

Dec 16, 2005

    1. Definitely the mold! I really like to be able to see the blank mold before deciding on a doll. Although different face-ups can completely change a dolls look, for me, it's the mold that really determines who the doll can be.

    2. I think, primarily, the faceup is what draws me in initially to a certain doll. I see a lot of personality in the way the makeup is done on company photos, but the unpainted mold is a make or break kind of thing. I've gone through tons of dolls online where "omg it's the most gorgeous doll ever I must have it" turns into "wow she has a pointy nose/really angular face/enormous ears sticking way out from her head/etc./whatever it is that doesn't appeal to me about the mold" and obviously it's the photographer's job to make the doll look as good as possible so you don't really see these kinds of things on a painted doll - you're drawn to other aspects of it. "Wow she's got beautiful eyelashes/rosey cheeks/etc etc."

    3. I think it's the sculpt. The faceup can initially attract me to a head, but sometimes when I see it blank I can see small things that turn me off, such as the eyes not fitting the head properly, or the head being too "blocky".

    4. I do my own faceups, so the mold is what is most important to me.

    5. Headmold with faceup )) Not necessarily default faceup, though, it can be "oh, this mold will be just gorgeous with so-and-so custom faceup". But there are only a few headmolds I can appreciate "naked" (without any paint on).

    6. Well...I gotta say the mold, but then if it's an extremely awesome face-up it makes the mold look ''better'', so i'm kinda unsure about what i think but overall...i say the mold :3

    7. The sculpt - with every sculpt you can see terrible face ups which complete spoil the look, but it doesn't change the sculpt below it.

    8. I have yet to buy a doll with the company face-up, and I'm not sure that I ever will. I'm not usually interested in the full-sets and those I am, I'm not willing to pay so much extra for.

I'm more interested in the mold, so I can better imagine what I can do with it.
I like to take it in to photoshop and actually paint the faceup on and experiment.

    9. I keep going back and forth on this question. Face up is important but some mold are just odd and I don't like the way they look no matter how painted or eye colours. So certainly mold for me.

    10. I think mold. Since I'm not too keen on ordering dolls with company-made face ups (I like doing my own face ups), I simply look to the mold.

    11. The mold is more important to me. The faceup can always be changed. The only way I can see it being different is if the mold is a limited with a dark face that I don't like and couldn't be sure it could be completely removed.

    12. I think I look for an attractive mold before thinking about the face-up. The sculpting of the face is far more important to me - although, I have also seen some beautiful face-ups that changed my opinion of a certain mold.
      so, I suppose it depends.

    13. The mold is what matters most to me. A great face up can boost the initial attractiveness of a less pleasing sculpt but I can't stay seriously interested unless the "bones" underneath are completely pleasing to me.

    14. heh, oddly enough i have had an experience where a faceup made me notice the mold...
Luts El was not a doll i ever meant to own, i wasnt crazy about any Luts mold and never considered them for any of my characters. then i saw a WS El with a dark gothic faceup i really liked and thought for the first time it might be Ryuji but for the height and eye shape. fast forward several months and i have a Dreaming El on a much taller body taking care of both those small picky issues. so even tho i try not to notice the faceup first since i know they can be changed, sometimes it happens, and for the better <3

    15. What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?
Definitly the head mold for me. I tend to like certain faceups, but I usually look at what different things people have done with a particular mold before I buy it for myself because faceups can be changed very easily, but it's much harder to change the mold.

    16. The face mold. I can always do the face up myself :D

    17. I think I'm more attracted to the head mold. Sure faceups can be very beautiful but sometimes i see a doll and think i would like a different face up because i don't like the way it was done. So id go with the head mold ..more then the face up.

    18. I agree! Then, when I get them, I kind of let them sit for a while so I get a feel for what they should look like.

    19. The sculpt, definately. The shape and features really do determine the 'undertone' of the doll's appearance, no matter the face-up. The profile (side view) of the face is important for me, personally, because that's where I can see the dimensions of the face and how balanced all the features are.

Also... there are tiny things about the sculpt that will be my deciding factor to purchase or pass. For example, my B&G Afra; the little Nordic bump on the bridge of his nose is what made me choose him over several other doll candidates. His nose is pretty awesome. I know that sounds weird, but the other dolls I was looking at had itty-bitty pointy noses and the more I stared at them, the more the needle-noses started to creep me out. So I went with the handsome face with the well-proportioned nose with the Nordic bridge.
I liked that nose-bump; it was manly :<

    20. For me it's the Head mold first. Unfortunately I can't do any faceups but I love looking at others.
