What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?

Dec 16, 2005

    1. For me it's more the head mold. Faceups are changeable, and usually the faceups male dolls have are too feminized for my personal taste, so I change them anyway. Mathonwy had serious "smoky eyes" makeup and what was almost lipstick, so I wiped most of that, or else he'd still look like Twilight's Edward.

    2. for me the head mold, i have never seen a company face-up that i totaly loved.

    3. I would have to say both...plus attitude.

    4. Face Up; there could be a "beautiful" headmold, but I wont like it unless theres a face up to bring "alive" that mold.

    5. Head mold--hands down.

    6. Face up first. If I'm browsing through dolls and I see a pretty face up in the icon I'll give it a click. Then I'll start analyzing the sculpt after I've decided I like the doll's stock shots. I mean, if I like the dolls default look, then I think there's a chance that I could improve it to suit my tastes.

    7. I'm a firm believer that a great faceup will make even the ugliest mold more attractive.

For instance, I am NOT a fan of Bobobie, but I have seen some Sprites with some GORGEOUS faceups that actually make me ALMOST reconsider! A good faceup can do a world of good for a doll.

Also, on the other hand, a gorgeous mold can have a horrid faceup and completely ruin the doll for me.

I am more attracted to the faceup than the mold itself.

    8. It's a 50-50 thing for me. I've seen some faceups that really, really turned me off of a mold, and then seen some that make a mold I really dislike look really, really good.

Okay, so I lied....I think it's more of a mold thing with me, because there are certain features I tend to like or dislike, but the faceup really, really does matter.

    9. Head mould :) Usually when I look at dolls and deciding if I want them, I look at all their facial features. The important thing for me is eyeshape :sweat

Which is why I like BlueFairy dolls. Their default faceup is nice yet simple. It's always interesting to see BF dolls with custom faceup.

    10. A combination of both?

The mold is more important as it is the foundation of the face, and the make-up artists can only do so much with a certain shape. But if the face-up doesn't compliment the mold, I won't even consider the doll.

    11. Hmm, it's most likely the head mold. However, I choose the head mold based on a variety of face ups I've seen.

    12. In general it is def face up I too don't really notice molds and have a hard time telling most of them apart.
That being said I know that there are some head molds that are striking and do shine through the face-up (of course) Like angry molds or sleeping molds

But I find the face-ups make the personality and it is the personality that draws me in so I don't think that us being drawn to face-ups makes us shallow or that beauty is only resin deep

I think instead that it shows that beauty is in the personality and not so much the 'face' but the character of the doll

    13. faceups can be changed and doesn't last forever.. so head molds win.
besides, faceups should work with the head molds, other wise it'd look weird. head mold is the basic, start for doll. Anyways mockups will do the same as faceups.
so many beautiful molds.... but most likely the first time it's the faceup that catch me, then the mold has to be shown before making decision of its true beauty.

    14. When looking for a new doll it absolutely, 100% has to be the sculpt. I like to do mods and give my boys custom face-ups so I have to see what the actual base sculpt underneath all the frills looks like to see if that is possible. Company face-ups can be misleading, make you see features that aren't really there or accentuate them in ways you might not like and don't realize you can chance.

I'll never stop thinking it's odd when people say they have a doll they can't bond with because the face-up isn't what they wanted. Um...what? Face-ups are not permanent, if you don't want your doll looking quite so feminine or angry or whatever, then wipe it off and change it! I know that can take a bit more work than just simple words imply, but I definately think it's always worth the extra work rather than to give up something over such a silly reason before even giving it a chance to change.

Anyway, I love it when companies give blank shots of their sculpts since I can really see the features of the doll underneath and see if it will work for what I want. A doll done up default all girly and blonde can blind someone into only seeing that image of them instead of realizing that doll would be just as beautiful with a red wig and darker colors. I don't like to be distracted by someone else's vision of a doll. I want to see a blank slate and create a vision for it myself.

    15. Unless the head mold really sticks out, it's usually the face-up that sells it for me.

    16. i will say it's head mold for me. face up is making it more attractive, but if the head mold is not my type, i can't fall in love with it

    17. Head mold, absolutely. I'm very picky with what I like. If the eyes aren't exactly the right size or distance apart from each other and if the mouth is too sad and the lips are too full/thin, I won't like the doll no matter how good the faceup is.

    18. since I've been buying just the blank heads it would have the head molds but I do search to see what they would end up looking like with a face-up.

    19. I think its a combination of both for me. Because i can love the face-up but i still won't buy it if i think the actual face itself looks weird :sweat
ie. pretty makeup but the doll has freakishly huge eyes = still not buying no matter how good the face-up is. and vice versa. won't buy a beautiful head with a bad face-up either

though i will admit, i've seen a doll before that i did not think of much in the way of attractiveness *sugarcoating it* but saw the same model with a custom face-up that made the doll look AWESOME. so i guess every once in a blue moon, the face-up can override the not-so-good features of the mold and ((again)) vice versa

    20. Face mold! Since faceups can be subject to change, I find it better to be able to visualize what a mold would liike like with a face up that I'm partial to.

Although, a ton of faceups have convinced me for some molds. <3~
