What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?

Dec 16, 2005

    1. Definately the faceup. It makes a world of difference how it's painted, wigged, eyes, etc. No contest.

    2. I think for me, make-up attracts me more than the head mold. Normally, I'll attract to the doll's specify face-up, like my Volks doll, I love them only when they have their default face-up... which actually annoied me sometime.

But on the other hand, there are ocassions that some head mold, with whatever face up won't attract me at all.

    3. Both but mold'll consider more.

Some molds I'm sure I never want even if it has a super beauty faceup.

    4. Hrm~ ...I'd say the face-up is what attracts me to a doll most of the time. xD Usually when I see a blank head I can't usually tell the difference between one head and another (especially if they're from the same company or something). :sweat
      I THINK there might be a few doll heads that I'd just have to get, no matter what other face-ups I've seen on it, but for the most part, I tend to lean more toward dolls I've seen nice face-ups on. xP;

    5. I'd have to say mold, if only because if I ever buy from a company(which I have only done so far), all of their face-ups look the same. I would probably do the same for buying second-hand, to, unless it was a face-up artist that I loved and would want to keep the same faceup forever.

    6. About me, I think both mold and face-up are importants. A mold shows the itself better caracter with a good face-up only. But, it's true that some molds lose something when they have a face-up, as DSAM32. So I look at both under different point of view: mold only, mold with several good face-up and mold whit bad face-up.

    7. I don't have any dolls of my own, but when I see a dolls face, I would have to so its the sculpt of the face I like more than the face up. Somethimes I'll see a doll and think its got a great face but that sometimes the face of kind of distracts from the sculpt itself. That's how I feel at least.

    8. The faceup is important, but I won't buy a doll unless I like the mold. if the mold is good and I am in love with it, the faceup can be even non-excistant and it would be fine with me :)

    9. I'm never attracted to a doll unless I'm in love with the mold in some way~ You can never trust company photos or default face ups completely until you've seen the doll in a number of different face ups or until you've seen it blank and can envision what you want your doll to look like yourself.
In my case, I always take note of little nuances about a doll's mold that interest me or that I find attractive, and if there are things about the mold that I like or love, I go searching for owner pics of the doll in different face ups and see all the different possibilities...ooorr, if I already have a character in mind (which is what normally happens when I find a doll I like), I take a photo of the blank mold and draw a face up and hair onto the head in photoshop and see if the mold works as the character I had in mind ^^
That's why I get really frustrated when everybody keeps their doll with the default face up or when everyone's face up looks the same...or when there are no pictures of the head mold in it's blank state ¬_¬ Because then there's no way to tell if the mold is versatile or not x_x

    10. the mold cause you can always change the make up :P

    11. I think it definitely depends on the mold itself, in the end. I've seen a lot of user dolls here that I just ADORE (and would love to have!) but when I see the doll with the default or company faceup--or no faceup at all--it just doesn't appeal to me.
Typically, however, I tend to buy dolls that I think look cute/beautiful with ANY faceup; for example, I like 90% of the Shalls I see and 500% of the Ltf Antes I see.

    12. If I don't look at a blank doll and still like what I see, then it's not a doll I want to own, so it's the mold and only the mold that helps me to make a descision.

The face-ups of other owner's dolls help me to imagine how the doll will eventually look, but it really doesn't sway my opinion either way. I want to try to add all my doll's face-up on my own eventually anyway, so my doll's would have unique faces in the end. My first doll is only coming with face-up just so I can get some time to really research and practice, and BBB face-ups are really simple and cheap.

Basically, a beautiful face-up may look stunning on a mold, but if you wash that off and decided to do something different, and don't like what you see underneath, that's a waste of money.

    13. When I was new to the hobby, I used judge whether I was really attracted to a certain doll by the company faceup alone. Now, I definitely make my decisions based off of the mold. If I look at a blank head and don't feel the same way about it, then the doll probably isn't for me. I want a doll that I could love even without paint on its' face. Knowing that it looks good blank also makes me feel like the mold is more versatile in general, which is nice. :)

    14. To me, I'm attracted more to the face-up. As I can't do face-ups myself I'd like my doll to have a face-up I actually like. Lol. But even though I'm attracted more towards the face up, doesn't mean I don't appreciate the mold. I love Citlali's mold. And like in the sites where you can only buy a head, without a face up. It's nice to see what they do look like with face up. So that way, when I can do face ups. I have an idea what might look good and what might not. Even though I seem to have similar tastes when it comes to face ups. Lol. But yeah! Right now it's face up.
But when I can actually do them. I think I might look around at molds more carefully. And see what some molds I might not like, look like with different face ups. Could give ya some nice ideas for the particular mold. And also make ya like it more. So yeah. I'm just ranting. Lol. XD

    15. I've seen that avatar before, kinda makes me wonder. ;)

But anyway, I tend more towards faceups than the headmold itself when deciding what doll to fall in love with because it is if nothing else an example of what the doll can become, and I have problems imagining the doll with different features. But when I get to meet the doll in person, that all goes out the window. I am in love with my first doll (DT Arin) for things that I couldn't see in either the company pictures or owner pictures of the head, but that only became apparent (and maybe only apply) when I saw my very own Arin in the resin.

Truth be told, I am the same way with people too, thinking things in a person I like are endearing and cute which in any other person would be disgusting at best, just because I like the person in question. Maybe it is a desire on my part to see the best in dolls or people who I find attractive.

    16. i think the head mold itself is more importrant when choosing a doll becuase even for a really good face-up artist it would be a kinda difficult (i won't say impossible becuase im not a professional) to make a natrually smiley/ happy doll look gloomy and vise versa. plus face-ups are temporary and molds (should be) are forever (unless modded).... that it my opinion.

    17. Wow I am suprised to see so many folks sayings faceups. Have to agree with Saori:

    18. I'm also surprised at so many saying faceups, since that's one of the most easily changeable things about a doll.

Now that I'm doing more of my own faceups it's even more definitely mold here. I've wiped a company faceup before and am about to wipe another, even. Some companies have amazing faceups and some have just average ones, and some aren't that great (or consistent), but the molds are gorgeous when given a custom faceup that suits them. A mold I don't like, though, is not going to appeal to me no matter how wonderful the faceup is.

    19. The head mold has to be amazing for the face to be amazing with or without make-up. For me anyway.

    20. I tend to look at face-ups like a work of art; and i don't buy those often! i'm more into the mold than the face up for sure....i feel more 'connected' to the dolls i work on myself, and i only work on them if they come blank.
