What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?

Dec 16, 2005

    1. I feel like looking at blank heads I miss the subtle nuances that you don't' notice unless there's at least a smidgen of color. Face ups always catch my attention first, I get to notice the little teeth showing between parted lips, the cute dimples that stand out against pearl lipsticks, or how wide the eyes are in contrast between different companies. If I didn't see a face up I wouldn't understand all the molds intricacies.

    2. both, i'm sure that there is lots of head molds that i will never like and some kinds of make-up that can make the best head mold horrible

    3. I am all about the mold. A faceup can change, and I'm learning to do my own, so it's cheaper to get a blank mold. The pictures of faceups give me an idea of the possibilities, but I like the idea of putting my own personality into the face when I can.

    4. The headmold for me... ^^; The faceup can change, like mysoultokeep already said...
      I also agree with Vithae_Kenneos. ^^

    5. I believe that faceups are all-important. Whilst the head itself is the initial attraction (and I do have VERY specific mold tastes) I have seen some faceups that have destroyed what I thought was nice about a particular head. On the flipside of that, i've also seen ones that've made me very interested in some of the dolls i've had an abhorrence towards before, and so I must conclude the faceup is what makes a doll - the head is simply the potential.

    6. It's about 50/50 for me. I won't buy a doll if the head mold isn't what I'm looking for, but if the faceup on it is nice enough and makes the mold look like the character I have in mind, then I would get it.

    7. Strange question - both of course))
But there are possibilities anyway: I search for mold, if I don't like the face-up, I'd just buy without it and make\find a profy to make.
If there are some mold imperfecions that I want to change\remove - well it depends on the difficulty of work. To make a nose a bit thinner is easier than to change all cheekbone sculpt, for example )) So mold is a bit more important, I guess

    8. Both the mold and face-up play an importance. Looking at different face-ups of the same mold helps me visualize the versatility of the mold. But ultimately it is the mold that determines if I buy the doll or not...

    9. For some reason its a little bit of both, but mainly the face up. I cannot resist adding a doll with a beautiful face up to my want list. But if their face mold isn't as pretty then I won't add it. So maybe the face mold? Hmm...not entirely sure. o.o

    10. Definately the head mold for me. When I look at dolls that I would consider buying I always try to find pictures of them without faceups so I can really see what the shape of the face is.

    11. Hard to say... On one side, the mold is the less customizable part if you`re new to this, on the other side, I believe the faceup makes the doll who you want him/her to be and lets you change them with less effort. But this is just a newbie`s opinion, correct me, if I`m wrong.

    12. I'm shallow, point blank. If I don't like the sculpt without the faceup, I wouldn't buy it. For me, it's because I buy blank heads and can do whatever faceup I want. Without a good sculpt, it's harder to make it look good. And I'd rather buy something i like without having to work on liking it. Luckily for Soom MD's for example, I'm quite good at seeing what the head looks like without the faceup, but it doesnt always work (ie sphaler. If he's pretty with no faceup, I'm doomed. Darn you soom and your photoshop effects. They do not help me.)

    13. For me it's definitely the head mold. There are dolls that I don't like no matter how well the face-up is done. On the other hand I often search for pics of dolls whose mold I like. I usually keep the default face-up and I find it very interesting to see how the doll could look - it's fascinating how much fantasy some doll owners have and I'm very often in awe of the face-up and clothes.

    14. Head mold all the way, they can have the best faceup ever and if the mold seems off to me I just can't do it!!!

    15. um >< i like the head mold with faceup. especialy head mold with cold expresion. :)

    16. I'm rather bad about distinguishing between sculpts, so I have to say that faceups seem to be pretty important. I've bought several dolls where I absolutely HAD to have the default faceup... although the entire doll was also very important, of course. I have to like all elements of a doll if I'm going to invest so much time and money in them.

But I have bought dolls without faceups--so sculpts are important, too.

    17. i'm more towards faceups. It's how the person managed to convey the doll's expression or enhance the features that catches my eye.

This is just my two cents worth :)

    18. I think the faceup is more attracting. Of course, I always check to see what the blank head looks like afterwords. But yes, a faceup is defiently more attracting to me than the actually mold because I feel the expression is all in the faceup.

    19. The head mold, all the way. Because my dolls are not based on characters or strong visual references, I tend to change their looks quite often. Faceups, like makeup, can only do so much if the base is not already fabulous. I wouldn't go for company faceups, or even other artists' faceups, because then it feels like the doll is no longer 'mine'?

But I do like seeing different faceups to see the realised potential of the sculpts, because sometimes, low contrast pictures can obliterate details from the sculpts.

    20. oh man...the faceup is WHY i can't choose a doll.

I find one, absolutely stunning doll; go to the website it's from, and the picture of it looks nothing like what i saw from another member..
      which makes me "ehhh"

Sure, some molds are a LOT nicer to me then others, but the faceup is usually what gets me first.
      sighsighsigh
