What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?

Dec 16, 2005

    1. For me it's all about the headsculpt. If I see a head that strikes me the first thing I try to find it pictures of the blank head. I do all of my own faceups so I don't really care what faceups they come with. I have bought pre-faceupped dolls with truly beautiful work and wiped it no problem 'cause it's not what I want.

      For me, it's the sculpt.

    2. c: It's a bit half and half now for me. Before it was all face-up, but now I try to look for blank head mold & then a doll owner's face-up to see if I like the sculpt or not.

      But a really pretty face(up) doesn't hurt ;)

    3. well i consider both.
though the shape of head mold is important, a good make-up can change the whole feeling of the doll
so for me i would look at both head mold and makeup :)

    4. The head mold, definitely. The face up can always be changed.

    5. That's how I view it too, both are equally important to me.

    6. For me, personally, it's the head mold. I make a point to look at the head with many different face ups, and If I still love the look of the head with a face up I hate, then I know it's the doll for me.

    7. faceup, but it always comes down to that the faceup doesn't really look like the photo the companies showed us.

    8. Sort of both.
The head mold definitely MORE than a faceup- because no matter how you paint it, the mold will always be the same. But the faceup can either destroy a doll's attractiveness, or enhance it. I've seen many cases of dolls that I thought were beautiful that just... didn't look good at all after a certain faceup. There have also been dolls that I thought were okay, but not beautiful, who looked a lot prettier after someone did a gorgeous faceup.
However, there are some molds that I really don't like, and think are pretty much hopeless.
Its all a matter of opinion at that point, though. What I find beautiful, others may not~

    9. For me it is definitely the Head mold, plus body type... I like the buy them at the same time so i do not have floating heads around... I do all my own faceups so that is never a factor for me.

    10. To me, it's faceup. One mold can be extremely various with different faceups.

    11. I think it really depends...my Adonis I fell in love with because of the sculpt, but the faceup on the tan DZ Kay is what sold him to me. ^_^; I think a sculpt is probably more important overall, though. As has already been pointed out a faceup can be changed, but that doesn't matter if you just don't like the head.

    12. For me, it's sort of a mix of both. Like, no matter how nice the faceup is, I won't like a head with a bad mold. At the same time, though, if the faceup is bad then I generally won't find the mold as nice. For example, I've always thought that the AoD Mo was really ugly from looking at the promo pictures of it. Even when I saw the blank head I had some doubts. Once I saw some pictures of really nicely done Mo dolls, I fell in love, and am now buying one! =3 So, it's really a mix of both things that sell a doll to me.

    13. oh i don't buy a doll only cos she is just my fav mold, her face up and expression attract me more.. also have purchased a doll of my NON-fav mold because of her uniqe faceup

    14. for me it has to be the mold, a face up really brings out the mold, but it can look really different with a different face up.
so in the end if a mold had a face up that didnt quite tikle your pikle then you probably wont buy it, but
after seeing what other facups people have done to their dolls its a different look, so
you should definitely like the mold regardless of the face up, but thats just me :D

    15. I...do my own faceups, so I look only at the head mold. xD;

    16. It would have to be the mold in my case. I have seen many dolls that didn't strike me when they had faceups, but when I saw them blank, I didn't realize how gorgeous they were.

    17. Head molds are which attract me. Whatever it is the faceup on them, I imagine the head molds with the faceups I would like to be on them. Only in one of my cases the faceup I saw made me change my opinion about a head mold. I thought I would never have that head mold until I saw it with a faceup which made me think about it for a character I wanted and that nowadays I also have.

    18. Great question! I will have to say both. I don't think I can tackle a face up with any of my BJD's ever. I am an artist on flat canvas only... and I can do dolly furniture, etc. But on a BJD face mold no way. With that said, I believe I do look at both the mold and the face-up because I will be ordering or adopting the BJD in that way.

    19. Ooou that's a tough one. I think I look at both equally, but I almost want to say that I look at the head sculpt more. A doll can have a beautiful faceup, but if the face itself doesn't appeal to me then I don't want anything to do with it.

    20. Personally, I think the faceup makes the doll. The head sculpt is a given and I need to like it before choosing the doll, but everyone has the same headsculpt, the faceup changes the doll into mine.
