What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?

Dec 16, 2005

    1. I also think I am a mix of both. ^_^
Sometimes two or three head molds of a company will look almost identical blank, so that's when I go for the faceup I prefer. But if you take Fairyland, for example, I think their LTFs have pretty unique head molds. You can definately tell a difference between Bisou and Rachel, therefore I go for the mold I like better in that case.

    2. i dont think ive posted in this one yet..
at first its the faceup. Ill fall in love with a company picture or someones doll on here, but after that i have to see it blank.
And its really the blank that determines whether i buy. There are a lot of molds i like with a good face up but blank, i dont like. If i like a mold after seeing all kinds of face ups and still like its features without, then it gets on my want list.
though just for browsing, mostly face up.

    3. Originally I first fall in love with the company face ups, but truly I won't buy it for the face up.. I go looking for the blank head or if I can't find that jump on DOA and look to see owner pictures with company faceup, without faceup, or with owner faceup etc.. just to get a better feel of the doll's look and feel. I'd hate to get a doll with face up, and it not turn out to be what I expected .. if they changed their style since company pictures.. if somehow it gets ruined and you have to wash it away to the blank head and realize you can't work with it.. there's a lot going on with it really..

I would hate having spent that money and be unable to love the mold how I had from first sight. I'm aware one can sell, but I'd rather not have to get a doll and sell it couple days it got into my house. It nearly happened with my first SD because I hadn't done that.. but once I dressed him and put on his wig it worked out.

With Jat I'd fallen in love with the faceup for sure, and though I couldn't find anything more I did take the chance.. I didn't order with faceup though either, but I've loved him since I opened the box. He fit the look of the character I had in mind perfectly.

    4. Headmolds seem to be weighted more simply because they are the canvas with which we are creating on. face-ups give you infinite possibilites but they are limited to the physical shape of the head itself

    5. It's always the faceup that first catches my eye, because usually its the faceup that helps define the structures of the head mold, but I personally wouldn't base a decision on the faceup entirely because that's changeable. If I like the faceup, that's when I go looking for blank pictures so that I can get an idea of what the head sculpt looks like. Sometimes faceups also camoflage things, and that's stuff that could turn you off a sculpt but that you might not notice without looking past the company (or owner) faceup, for example, maybe you're looking for a rather moody looking doll and you come across one that seemingly fits the bill. However, the doll could in actuality have lips that are turned up at the corners, and the lips on the faceup don't extend to the corners of the mouth, so that the doll doesn't look as smiley as it could have, and that could be something you're more likely to notice with a blank sculpt.

    6. Head mold first for me. I've seen beautiful head molds without the faceup look great and it's easy for me to determine whether or not I like the structure of very specific parts on the face. If it looks beautiful without faceup, I believe it will look even gorgeous with a faceup done professionally. A lot of faceups are beautifully done and it does get my attention but certain facial structure aesthetics turn me off no matter how beautiful the faceup is. For example: long nose, nose too narrow, over exaggerated lips, eyes to far apart, eyes too big.

    7. I don't look at the faceup at all. ^^ When I bought my Shushu, I thought she was ugly by the company pics, but then I started seeing user pics of her and I fell in love and I had to have her. Sure enough, she's mine now! <3

    8. I thought face-up is as important as the head mold.
Actually, I also can not tell the differenent from this one to another one if the head is blank.
However, a good head mold can enjoy more face-up, in my opinion, of course.
I do not know, but some head mold is really attract me and I also see those head molds are amazing too even with complete different face-up.

    9. It is the mold 100% for me, I always get them blank and have my giflfriend do the faceup, so before i buy a doll I make sure to always find pictures without a faceup

    10. I prefer to focus on the head MOLD, because I like to do my own faceups. But I think in order for people to notice the sculpt instead of the faceup is to see it blank. If you can't really tell the difference, I think that has to do with your "artistic" eye... some people really don't notice the subtle details that can make a huge difference.

    11. I've never done a face-up before so I guess company face-ups are fairly important to me because, if I really love the face-up and the doll sculpt, then I'll definitely think about getting that doll as I know I won't have to send them off to a face-up artist.
However, it's not the only thing I pay attention to. There are some dolls with face-ups that have been painted really well or something but I just don't like that sculpt so I don't want the doll. Although face-ups can change the way a doll looks dramatically - occasionally I'll see a doll and be all "Ah, what sculpt is that?! <3" only to find it's a doll I've always disliked. XD
Also, I have a few dolls on my wish list that will be getting sent away for custom face-ups so I guess I must pay attention to sculpt too... >.<

    12. Head mold for certain. I too try to see "underneath" the face up, to try and think the face up away. I am foremost interested in the possibilities and form of the blank canvas :)

    13. Definitely the head mold. I wish more companies had shots of the heads bald and unpainted.

    14. Face up. A good face up can make or break a mold.

    15. I take both into account. Face ups can change, but I'm not planning on doing any right away, so it's important. Emma had a default face up because I liked it, but the next doll is going to get something custom.

But the face mold is important, too. I'm not crazy about sanding resin, because it can be dangerous. So a mold close to ideal is a must.

    16. Mold. Face-ups are so easy to change. But if I like both the face-up and the mold, it's a definite plus!

    17. I like the face ups and the head mold. Its a tie but it really depends on how the face up is done and on the sculpt of the head. i think i like the head molds if they are shown with a right face up. Its hard to explain.

    18. I think I'm a mix of both. Initially it's the overall beauty of a doll that attracts me, but ultimately I want the blank sculpt to be something I can work with.

    19. The mold attracts me more, because I know you can do such drastic things with faceups- and if you dont like it, you can always erase it. The mold cannot be so easily modified, so you better pick one you like!
      haha.

    20. I seem to be a mold person. I look at the shape of the eyes, and the way the lips are curved, looking for a powerful or unique expression. (So many dolls just have empty blank looks....) Particularly if I'm looking to match one to a specific character in my head, then shape of face is important.
