What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?

Dec 16, 2005

    1. For me, it is definitely the face mould. I want a face that I like for the character even without the faceup, although I think the faceup is what makes the character for me. Faceups are so changeable, but if I don't like the face, that's permanent.

    2. Head mould, sometimes the default face-ups make me hate a mould but then I see blank pictures and I see the features of it properly and can appreciate it. I also wish there were more blank photos on the company websites. I know for example most recently I don't like the Pukifee Luna or Minifee Chloe defaults, they're too make-up heavy looking for my tastes and style, but both moulds are really nice blank!

    3. The head mold, I need pouty lips XDDDD

    4. I'm new to BJDs, but I'd definitely have to say that face molds and faceups matter to me the most/same. I've seen pictures of pretty doll faces that have an awful nail polish faceup, and I've seen ugly doll faces that manage to be pretty with their faceups.

The doll I have chosen as my first (and only) bjd, has both a really pretty (imo) face mold and a really pretty faceup.

    5. The head mold for sure! I do my own face-ups, so it doesn't much matter what the default is. I do need to see the head with a decent face-up to tell if I like the sculpt, though; it's hard to imagine how it could look if it's all blank.

    6. For me, its the mold. The shape of the eyes and lips mostly. I do faceups myself, so the doll comes to me blank anyway..

    7. The head mold is what I like. If I like a mold only a really bad faceup will make me turn up my nose at it.

However, a really good face up will get me to give a previously disliked mold a second look.

    8. That's a tough one for me- I think the face-up definitely helps a lot- but, it's not the be all. I always like to see the blank head so that I can better assess what features the doll actually has versus what I'd need to do in a face-up. Not going to lie though- seeing a sculpt with repeatedly bad face-ups doesn't help. There are however, certain things that I explicitly must have in a sculpt, and seeing a blank head is imperative to make sure those features are there. I'm a pouty lips/snub nose/medium sized eyes kinda girl, so I need to check my sculpts pretty carefully to make sure all those features are viable and not just the product of a good (or bad) face-up.

    9. For me, it's definately the head mold. The head mold is the base for a faceup, and face-ups can definately be dramatically different! I admit though, that some face-ups help bring out different aspects of a head mold, so some have lead me to look for the head mold in different face-ups to see if it looks just as good :)

And some face-ups are just so beautiful, others just don't compare @_@

    10. Head mold, unless the only picture I see of said mold is with a horrible faceup from the factory with no other picture of the head; which I've never seen any so I think its good.

Owner pictures really do become your best friend if you're looking to see the versatility of a mold; so you can't really rely on faceups to tell if you like a mold or not.

    11. Ffff definately the mold, I have only ever bought one doll that came with a faceup and it was becasue it was a second-hand doll and already had one. I do my faceups myself so i cannot imagine ever buying a doll for it's faceup! Faces change and can be changed but the mold is permanent! I'm actually surprised by the amount of people who have said the buy based on faceups.

    12. head mold for me..I always check the eyes, nose and lips if I will like it..I could do any face-up in it..even if the default face-up is good, if I don't like the head mold..

    13. I think that the face up has a lot to do with whether I like the doll or not. I've seen some company photos where I didn't like the sculpt at all, and then I saw owner pictures of the sculpt where I realised that the sculpt is actually better than I thought it was. I've also seen sculpts where the default face up looks absolutely gorgeous but in owner pictures it didn't.

    14. The headmold probably a bit more. There are certain features I look for in a headmold and just having a nice faceup won't change that. But seeing all the different faceups the doll can have with a particular mold helps.

    15. Definitely faceup, but mold is important too. If I were to buy a head, I'd like it to already have a faceup. Seeing pictures of blank heads with faceups allows me to see at least one possibility of what the face could look like. The mold has to be at least workable if I were to accidentally crack/scratch/wipe off the face up. Though it is possible to have a beautiful faceup on a unattractive head and vice versa.

    16. I have to say that I look at head sculpt more. I'm very observant of facial structure in humans, and it's not so different for me when looking at dolls either. When I look at a doll, I do admire the faceup, but I try to look at its head shape, lips, the shape of the eyes, and muse on whether I could see a character with a similar face.

I try to find pictures of blank heads of dolls I like. If they have a... face structure... that I like, then that is a doll I may go for. If they don't, then it may not work out. With the limited funds I am going to have towards hobbies and other luxuries, if I'm going to go into something as expensive as this, I want to be sure that the dolls I get I will love whether they are painted or blank.

    17. Sculpt, by far! I have seen gorgeous sculpts ruined by bad faceups. and I have seen default faceups so bad that I first thought the sculpt was terrible....but now I look past the faceup and wouldn't have several of the dolls I do if I couldn't.

I have also learned that if I don't like a sculpt, it doesn't matter how great the faceup is, I still see an ugly doll....and have sold dolls for that reason, before I was able to look past the paint

    18. Whenever someone says they fell in love with a doll because of something like a face up, it always confuses me. A face up is temporary... it will go away someday.

    19. For me, I look at the head mold first. I think with the right mold you can choose face-up style and character much easier.

    20. I find its a mix of both, if I saw a bunch of black head it i wouldn't really like any, though if i see a head with a good face up, I then look for other versions/ face ups ON that head to see if it still looks any good.

on one occasion i LOVE a head/face-up combo, then saw it slightly different and hated it, while my current want, I adore no matter what the face-up. though I mostly came to like her FOR her default one.
