What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?

Dec 16, 2005

    1. If I see a face-up I like, I'll find out what mold it is, then research that mold. So I guess you could say I'm more attracted to the face-up. But I will always research the mold, different face-ups and all that jazz before I buy a doll. What good is a head from Luts if you liked a Vanillashine face-up on it only to be disappointed with the mold itself.

    2. The head mold. There are certain characteristics that I just tend to like better, with AND without makeup. Some of these include lower eyelids (like on Soulkid Apple and Ninodoll WooU... Gorgeous! :D ). Actually, the lips mean a lot to me, too. However, I'd have to say that with the lips the makeup affects me a lot. For example, I love the EL on the Luts website, but when I saw the head without makeup I was kind of 'ugh...' :sweat But the makeup will be on for most of the time, so I guess that means more to me.
      50/50? I'm confusing myself. >_<;

    3. What I'm finding so far is that finding a faceup I like helps me find a workable head mold, i.e. I know that in the right hands, this mold can look like what I want, even if it's not something I see in the unpainted head or one with a different style faceup. I suppose the ideal is being able to recognize the potential of any given mold regardless of its current condition, but that requires a level of insight, research, and inspiration I haven't reached yet. Working on it, though!

    4. i think no two face-ups can be painted exact so i think the head mold is more important.

    5. It can be either for me though I've got to admit that a great face-up is often the deciding factor. I have some dolls that I didn't particularly care for until I found one with the perfect face. Other dolls attract me because of their strong molds. Generally though I don't buy blank heads or even dolls I like with bad face-ups. I want a doll that I can enjoy right out of the box.

    6. A beautiful face-up can make me enjoy looking at a head mold I don't ordinarily like, but no face-up is bad enough to ruin a head mold I love. For one thing, a face-up can always be removed, and I love looking at blank heads -- a good sculpt is a joy all by itself.

    7. A little of both, i think, for me. I will admit that i've been attracted to the faceups due to the colors and realism, but deep down i think its more of the headmold, since there are certain things that just turn me away. For instance, i really dont like the faces with the lowered eyelids or narrower eyes--the pics i see tend to make them look like they either want to eat my soul or they just have a really creepy stare going on. But thats just me, no offence to anyone who likes them ^^;

      Ok...so maybe it is the headmold ^.~; The faceup helps greatly though--but then again i dont have much experience with seeing different faceups on similar headmolds, either ^^;

    8. It's the head mold for me all the way. Then I can tell the difference between head molds, from just the slightest changes. I saw a head mold with 'slight moddifications' and it was totally not the same doll to me. I choose heads based on the shape, as it will fit a certain character. I'm rather picky for which head goes with what doll/character.

    9. Well a head mould I don't paticulary like with a face-up that appeals to me will change my mind about it. Face-ups help a lot so I'd say face-ups.

      But then again 50/50, because I usualy shoot towards heads I see with cute noses and half-closed eyes regardless of face-up.

      Though a line of plain heads I can see immeadiatly which one I prefer.
      Just I think of face-ups as a way to reel you in. I would never buy by a face up though *_*

      Anyway I would say 50/50

    10. Mould all the way. I need to look behind the face-ups to see if a doll works for me.

    11. The mold definitely. There have been so many dolls that I've tossed aside thinking they looked awful and then realizing that it was only because of their faceup that they looked bad! This happened for me with Dollshe. I kept seeing the way they looked on eluts and was totally turned off and thought they were ugly... but then after seeing what other DOA members have done with such molds like Saint and Bernard -- I want them BADLY. They're gorgeous. So now when I'm looking at a doll, I totally look beyond the faceup to see what they're really like! <3

    12. I do usually go for the faceup, but Il never get it if the head mold sucks....and a nice wig helps too....

    13. I'm a fan of both the faceup and the mold, because I think how former turns out depends partially on the latter. Some aspects, like the shape of the facial features, can really dictate how aesthetically appealing a doll will look. But then again, the first impression of a doll that I get is usually from the faceup. :)

    14. For me, the moulds are more important since it's the mould that makes me think of a character fit for it:) And instantly, I also have ideas about possible faceups.

    15. I think the head mold attracts me more. I love Volks Tony, but I hated the default brown face up. As soon as my turn came on a face up waiting list, I sent him away to get a new face up. XP

      Of course, I'm a giant fan of pretty face ups, but there are some dolls that no matter what sort of face up they have? No matter how pretty the face up is? I still dislike them because of the head mold.

    16. Sure, there are certain head molds I like better than others, because certain ones have more distinguished features/etcetc, different eye shapes, smiles, whatever but, for the most part, if the mold has a crappy face up I tend not to like it. X3 I've seen molds that I originally didn't like at all with beautiful face ups and they're much more appealing so I think face ups make quite a deal of difference for me. :3 Or possibly I'm half and half? x3

    17. The mold is definitely most important to me, because the faceup can easily be changed, but the mold can only be modded so much, and few people can do major modding jobs really well.
      Basically, the mold contains the "bone structure" of the doll's face and the faceup is the makeup that goes on top of it. While an excellent faceup artist can make it look much better, some molds will only appeal to me if they receive major "plastic surgery" at the hands of an expert. That being said, I really do love gorgeous faceups and, even when I find a mold that I love, I want to get a good faceup. However, even with the perfect faceup, if the mold is wrong, I will not love the doll as much as if I got the right mold and a tolerable faceup.

    18. Definitely mold..... yep.

    19. It has to be a good mixture of both- a gorgeous faceup on an ugly mold will not look good, and a gorgeous mold with a horrible or just not-fitting faceup would look bad as well. Even though I guess that there's a greater weight to faceup, because there were times when I saw a mold I don't really like with a wonderful faceup that made me want them despite my lack of love for the mold.

    20. It depends on the doll. With the dolls that I love at first sight and decide that I will have no matter what, it's a combination of their faceup and their head mold.

      When it comes to looking for dolls for certain characters, then the head mold takes precendence over the faceup. I need a certain facial structure and look, and I figure I can usually change the faceup later when I get enough experience and confidence to.

      And when it comes to dolls that I like but aren't good for a character and aren't love at first sight, I go by the head mold (especially the shape of their eyes).
