What attracts you more: the head mold or the faceup?

Dec 16, 2005

    1. both are very important to me, but the face up is the thing that catch the eye. I watch lot of pictures of a doll with different make ups and after that I'm looking for a photo of a head without face up.

    2. I think its both the headmold and the faceup. But the faceup really affects me.

I've seen a really bad face up on this one doll which made me not like it at all, no matter how I looked at it. But once I saw the defult makeup on it I fell in love with it.

    3. Usually headmold, a good faceup is a big plus though.

But if it has a faceup that is done in a way it could not be totally removed and will leave a stain, like huge exagerated lips painted in dark red / blue based red, then the faceup would weigh heavier on my decison making me less likely to buy that head.

    4. The faceup can make it or break it for me. Even if a doll is one of my favorite molds, if the faceup is bad I won't find it pretty.

Lately I've been more attracted to individual dolls, rather than just a general mold.

    5. I am drawn to the sculpts not so much to the face ups. I just think of these dolls and the multitudes of them out there as varying forms of art and just like any art we all have our preferences.

    6. i'm all for head molds when it comes to getting one for myself. versatility is key.. but .......well, the face up is something that attracts me, yes..
but by the time i'm up to get one, i've already got the overall look in mind
(of course looking at other face-ups does help! =^.~=)

and then again.. i had already liked SOOM's Sabik head.. but the 80cm height shy'd me away permanently.. but then i saw SDink's Heat.. and my fangirl self was shot dead with his glance. =@~X= i soo want his head mold now for a certain OC of mine. <3

    7. Allo~

im still new to abjd's so im trying not to be hooked on a doll just because of the face-up. ive caught myself many times just liking a doll for her face, so i try to ignore the face-up and look at the headmold pics if there are any. if not i try to just find pics of the same doll taken from different angles and look at the headmolds features.

so many of the face-ups are so lovely :fangirl: but there's no guarantee ill get the (exact) same face-up from the pics will there? *_*

to be on topic, im attracted to face-ups and i try to give the head mold as much consideration as possible. but im a sucker for pretty faces (doc Leya, bf Emilie) :aheartbea

    8. Definitely the face-ups. Molds are imp. too, but the face-up makes the
doll come alive. I like the more realistic, paler coloring.:D

    9. Face-up is usually what gets me. @_@ Looking at face-ups of dolls, even molds I thought I disliked look very good with a good face-up.

    10. I love head molds...

While faceups can really give a doll personality, I have to say that the headmolds help a lot. I can tell a doll almost instantly by the mold. Specifically, anything CP or Chiwoo/Shiwoo related.

Nose, eye and lip shape are important to me. :3

    11. I think for me, unless it's a tiny it's probably mostly the mold. I don't like giant heads, ears that stick out, semi-open mouthes (teeth molded between parted lips), or kissy mouthes. I do like nicely proportioned noses and lips and I prefer reasonably sized eyes with eyelids. So that's all mold. Then on top of that, I want to see faceups that attract me.

With tinies, I am less picky and the mold can have less detail or be less than what I would desire in a mini. If the tiny comes with a faceup, I also want to like that.

    12. for me, it qwould be the mold

    13. I can fall in LOVE with a face-up, but I would never BUY because of a face up.

Mostly because I'm the kind of person that must customize everything I can to my tastes -or even just to put my own print on it- and thus any dolls I get will come blank so I can do it myself.

Plus, I'm WAY picky about sculpts. Even if the face up is gorgeous, if I don't like the sculpt, I wouldn't get it. And vice versa: If I can't stand the face up but love the head, I'd buy it anyway :3

    14. head mold.
      faceups never last.
a good mold has endless potential.

    15. Face-ups are definitely what attracts me most, but it's also a love for the head mold as well. But when I first became interested in BJDs, I rarely noticed the head mold, and un-painted dolls looked odd to me. Now I can see just a head mold and like it, but it took getting used to for me to be able to do that.

    16. head mold! Face-up doesn't matter to me, most often you can buy a blank head and commish a stellar face-up from a good artist. Face-ups can be really gorgeous but when a good one is on a mold I like then it's even better XP

Plus I'm extremely picky, I like a handful of molds XP And would actually buy only a couple bjd molds

    17. Head mold for me.

    18. For me, it is a balance of both. The headmolds I like are more "Asian" BJD rather than the increasingly popular narrow faced girls that have faces reminiscent of a Barbie doll. At one point, I liked them ALL, but after really studying the faces and the wide array of limitless face-up options I know what I like. And it's not a fashion doll.

I like headmolds that are cute, girly and feminine. I like face-ups to be quite rosey and well-blushed since I think pale dolls will automatically look older and more realistic, but I tend to prefer more fantasy. Then, I like dark eyes, softly painted lips and darker lashes. I also prefer pinks over browns.

The thing is that a not so great headmold can be transformed into brilliance with a wonderful face-up. A brilliant headmold can just as easily be transformed into something not so great with a poor face-up. The headmold is simply the "start", but the face-up needs to maintain the look the person is looking for. Both are very important, in my humble opinion.

    19. Head mold for me. I try to look past the face up since I like doing them myself. If I find a doll with a head mold I like I then go and try to find that dolls database if it has one or other owners pictures, Then I can see the head with lots of face ups and decide if there are things I love or hate about the sculpt itself. I don't really get a good sense of the mold from the blank head photos either so I like to just check it all out, but it is most definitely about the mold.

    20. The mold/sculpt, definately. Sure, I mean, a face up can do wonders, but the more attractive you find the actual base, the more beautiful a good face-up will become. Did that make sense at all? lol XD
