What attracts you to your BJDs?

Oct 23, 2011

    1. I seem to have a subconscious thing for dolls that have a facial shape/bone structure similar to mine. I have a sort of oval, upside-down egg shaped face and I've been told by different people that both my LoongSoul Emily and my DOC Hoo look like me to a certain extent. A coworker thought my Hoo, who is a boy BTW, was supposed to be some sort of mini-me.

      I guess I'm subconsciously a narcissist.

    2. I'm usually attracted by an expression, a particular feature (often fantasy ears), or an association I make between a doll and another character.

Cuprit: I loved her expression. She just seems so anxious and gentle. I also love her ears (half-elf ears ftw)
Cheshire: I loved his teeth! And his huge, mad grin, of course.
Chrom: I loves his expression - resolute, but with a slight touch of sulky. And his ears (wolf ears = <3)
Cass: She reminded me of Ritsuko from Evangelion, except a bit younger and more wistful and sad.
Bygg: I loved the sad/surprised expression, and the contrast between his grey skin and his pink blushing.
Yrie: I loved the shape of her eyes, and her elf ears
Galena: I loved her lips, and how mysterious she seemed in grey skin. Her half-elf ears helped, too!
Ai: I loved the OE head's shocked expression, and the R. head's ears (deer ears = cannot resist)
Chalco: I loved his face-up (with the slight marks under his eyes), and his dark brown skin.
Shonki: I love his black skin! I wasn't in love with his features originally, but they are growing on me ^_^
Nephelin: I loved her eyes (which seem bigger to me than most of my dolls', without being too anime), and how sad and lost she looks. She also reminded me of Cass (and was originally going to be a younger relative of hers)
Migma: Her fangs! I knew I had to have her as soon as I saw those fangs. Her gorgeous purple skin and elf ears helped, as well.
Amber: Her ears are the reason she is one of my favourite sculpts, but I also love her lips and her wide eyes.
Heliot: His horn, and his horsey ears. I also love his half-closed eyes. I don't like his human head nearly as much as his unicorn head XD
      Sard: I love his eyes, and how direct his gaze is. I also love his lips (and the tiny, subtle half-smile at the edges of them), and his teeth showing through. His fantasy ears are probably the only ones I'm not hugely excited about, though >.>;

All my dolls are currently on Super Gem (or Teenie Gem) bodies, so body sculpt isn't usually a factor for me.

So, pretty much, the way to my heart seems to be:
      1. FANTASY EARS
      2. sad, wistful expression OR subtle smile OR fanged mouth
      3. realistic proportions (with anthros a necessary exception XD)

    3. So far I have just one BJD. She's a tiny little thing, a pukipuki darjeeling. What I really love about her is that she is so petite, yet so detailed and her posing is awesome. She's such a cutie, and I like that she has brown eyes (like me).

    4. I agree ! They are just amazingly unique . I adore their 60 cm female odies especially . The faces are very expressive also . I`d love to own one , but I don`t have any character yet that could fit any of them . I`m thinking of making one though , because they are just so pretty ,and I imagine that it would be really nice photographing them .

    5. Elf ears, and pretty eyes x3
Even though I haven't even got my first boy (MSD), I already want an SD. People are always carrying them around and they're so bigg :3
I'm not always fussed on what 'expression' they're face is making :P

    6. the main attraction to me really is the customizability. I just love to have things that can look the was I want them to

    7. Wow you guys this is so great! :3 I agree with the anything fantasy! I pretty much pick a lot of the dolls I wish I could have someday based on that lol

    8. I love so many things, it is easier to say what I am am not especially looking for in my dolls. I don't get excited about owning "another pretty face". I have a Supia Rosy, and she fills that slot for me. I will dress and treat her like the fashion model in my group. She is long and thin so I picked her for that and her realistic eyes. I don't think I will buy another realistic pretty face, maybe real life handsome...for the guys.

I do like realistic expressive hands. I'd prefer the lower legs not to look like logs, but that hasn't stopped me from buying faces that have attracted me. I like calves and ankles with some shape. Definition in the shoulder blades in the backs.

It is wonderful when the body is crafted so the doll can pose. If I have to choose some of my dolls to sell in the future, the ones that I can't work with for posing would probably go first. Maybe...

      WAIT, sell one? Haaa

I have a lot to learn about the stringing and ways to suede or wire, etc. to help them out with this part. But I have gotten the idea from what I've read from more experienced collectors that some dolls are much better than others for posing and standing alone. Knowing a doll is one of the best in this way would make me want it. So not a perfect bod as you asked, but this kind of bod.

I saw one doll recently with beautiful natural breasts, not the little baseball shaped ones. :XD: I would like one with that kind of beauty. I'm an artist and it would be fun to draw/paint a doll that is natural or realistic in this way.

Price has played a big part, for the second hand dolls I have, especially. I want my dolls to have faces for looking youthful punk, or fairyland worthy [so I'm with all the people who mention elf ears], childish and more classic dolly cute, AND dolls I can get with dreamy eyes or same sculpt with different expressions,,,AND the eyes like Shiwoo dreaming, narrow, which can be cast down, prayerful, or all kinds of emotions.

...and, the tall skinny Doll Chateau...and the most unusual faces on those dolls...

    10. I love bjds because they dont age, they dont gain weight, and they dont wear their clothes out. If i spend a lot of money on a dress I know its going to fit her forever. I also love the fact that you can change their hair, eyes and face up.

    11. What attracts me to my BJDs... Well, first of all: that they resemble my characters :). Furthermore, each of them has something distinctive - a kind of 'accroche-coeur'. None of them are necessarily the most beautiful dolls I have seen, but all of them have won my heart somehow.

My Dollzone dolls both have pretty large ears. I just love those ears! You wouldn't find them on a Soom or Iple doll - those try too hard to look perfect. Personally, I don't feel attracted to perfection.

Noses are also very important to me; all of my dolls have beautiful noses (not too small + with some character - Gwalchmei has a childish, rounded nose, Morgana a slightly upturned one, and Gawain's is straight and gorgeous).

In girl dolls, I am attracted to sculpts that display some personality; I find that too many girl dolls have beautiful, but rather vacant faces. My Morgana has the face of a lady you don't want to cross, and I'm actually having difficulty finding another sculpt for another strong-willed female character. Expression is of major importance to me.

I care less about bodies than some other owners, but I do look for beautiful hands and beautiful feet. I don't think I've ever seen any bodies with hands that I like more than my Dollzone dolls', and if length hadn't been a decisive factor, I think I might still have chosen the 65 cm body over the 68 cm one for my Gawain because the hands and feet on the shorter body look nicer :D...

You hear me yap about Dollzone a lot, and my doll family *is* mostly Dollzone. If you ask me what attracts me to my dolls, the company is actually a factor too. I just like their style and their philosophy, and their dolls feel right for me. Maybe that is one of the most crucial things: my dolls suit me, in just about every aspect. That's why they, and not any others, became my dolls, and why they are here to stay.

    12. My first doll, the Bobobie March, because I love elves. I also believe it was Ravendoll's make up that I loved.

Lately, the geekier the hands and feet and the more out of shape the body draws me to a particular doll. Lasher Dolls, DollChateau and that new Linda Macario (sp?) doll are on my love list.

    13. The face is the first thing. I have to be attracted to it otherwise what is the point? There must be something about it; an expression or the shape of the eyes or mouth. Something that says I need to come home and be part of the family. I have to see potential.

Second is the body. How does it look in the sales photos? Can it pose? It doesn't have to look realistic but it shouldn't look like a rag doll.

Expressive hands are a must and extra ones too. One of the reason I love Volks dolls is the range of optional hands they have. They look should natural too.

Then there is size. Will I have space for this new doll. Will they fit in clothing and shoes I already own or will I need to save up for a new wardrobe? There is a reason dolls in the 16cm (Lati yellow size) don't stay in my collection very long.

And finally price. Price used to be a deal breaker for a lot of dolls but now not so much. Many of the molds I like aren't limited so it gives me time to save. Also I've been lucky to find nice deals on some of them. Just takes a little time to find them. :)

    14. Real looking dolls. I don't go for the fancy ones. :sweat

    15. It's really the mold, there has to be something distinctive about it that makes it stand out to me. Something that makes the doll different from the other ones on the market, and makes it seem special.

    16. For me is the most important face. After body and size :) The price does not matter.

    17. For me, it's realism. Iplehouse and Fairyland are my two favorite companies. I love a realistic face sculpt and an "ideal" body.

A pet peeve for me is wrists and ankles that are too thick. I also don't admire dolls that need an abundance of work to be operational (sueding, re-stringing, etc.).

    18. My tastes have changed a lot over time. When i first started, I too cared mostly about price. I also wanted anime looking dolls. Big eyes, small nose, small mouth. Youthful looking but not "babyish". And something with excellent pose-ability.

My first 2 dolls were dollzone - still have my first one. Sold the 2nd because I have a really hard time bonding with male dolls. I like females 400% more haha. Right now all my dolls (including 2 incoming) are female. But I do eventually want another male - maybe next year :)

My 3rd doll was a 2nd hand obitsu gretel. I think she might have a missing piece in her neck cuz her head constantly rolls off - but other than that she is awesome. I would buy obitsu again in a heartbeat. They hold the pose longer than, and have a greater ranger of poses than their resin counter parts

I bought 3 aod minis (though 1 was free through an event). I sold off the free one and have a mimi and a lele. I honestly have not really bonded well to them but they are a cute, a bit too youthful looking for my tastes.

About 2 to 3 years ago, I bought my first "expensive" doll, a model doll F. I didn't really like their faces because they were more mature, but i loved the flexibility of the body. but she has grown on me and I now like her face quite a bit.

Right now I think I am going through this phase of wanting very "expressive" dolls with neutral to slightly displeased looking expressions. I find initially, I am drawn in to the big doe eye smile cutesy dolls still. I'll usually click them first still... But when it comes time to make a final decision before a purchase I'm finding smaller eyes and a less obvious smile, give the doll the ability to carry a wider range of "emotions". For example I ordered a Sinbi instead of a Soi from crobidoll this week. And what it came down to was that from different angles she took on very different expressions. Where as the Soi remained very constant in her expressions and looked very "blank" to me in most of the photos. It just seemed like Sinbi was more versatile which is important to me right now.

I find I am being drawn more and more to body now as well, which never used to be a concern for me at all. I think one of the main reasons i wanted Sinbi was because of how the knee joints/lines look... of all weird things, the knees are what attracted to want to purchase, even more so than the doll's face.

    19. I'm attracted to them because of their face. Especially the nose and mouth!

    20. This is what I like about my BJDs.

Kyoshi: his whole face(cute lips, small nose, big eyes, expressive eyes, sweet smile :D ). He's my dream doll and that face I do love A LOT.

Rosiel: His face again, I like his expression. Like he doesn't care about you!

Orien: the eyes, I like dreaming eyes.

Santii: his many expressions...sometimes he looks innocent, sometimes mad and sometimes sad.

Dantes: I love that nose and lips...and the cheeks too...oh well, his whole face^^

      -Dolls I'm waiting for-
Soom Metato: his narrow eyes and full lips.

MW Leila: the TEETH!! <3 and that cute smile.
