What attracts you to your BJDs?

Oct 23, 2011

    1. I pay a tooon of attention to bodies. My first doll wasn't, but aalll my dolls must be double jointed now. I can never buy a single jointed doll again, it just isn't worth it.
Aside from that, I dunno. It's hard to describe what I look for in a dolls face, other than the knowledge that I like it.

    2. I have such a variety of figures, it's difficult to say and I go more on a gut feel. My first bjd, a DC Bella, attracted me due to her unusual face and rather gaunt and oddly shaped body. I was intimidated by SD sized dolls and more than a bit freaked at their prices too, but have subsequently happily shelled out for a DC Olivia as well. I don't care for dolls who are too beautiful and usually go more for unusual with a lot of character. Like everything, tastes change and evolve over time. I also own a Lati Yellow which initially I figured too cutesy for me. What can I say, they grew on me!

    3. the price, and the facial expression.

I'm a penny pincher, and my mom taught me how to bargain hunt. Usually I look at the price range of a site before browsing their dolls...
The facial expression also gets me. I like having dolls with a gentle expression, perhaps a slight smile or something. I also don't like over-exaggerated features.

    4. So why do you love the style, size, shape, ect of your BJD? Do you find your self gravitating to one type of face or another? Dose the bod have to be "prefect" for you to even so much as LOOK at the head? ect.
I want to know why you bought the dolls you bought

When I first started out I liked warm faces, I had a thing for Delfs and I always stuck to that brand and Luts in general. I liked the bodies, even though at the time faces were more important to me. After a few problematic orders I branched out and wanted to try a less troublesome order, I went for a super gem with soom and from then on I fell in love with more realistic looking faces and bodies, also I started to take a lot more pictures of my dolls so needed them to hold good poses. Now I'm drawn to Iplehouse dolls. They are really realistic and they pose great, the proportions are amazing too, no bobble heads or strangely long necks and legs.
Face ups always help with an attraction, still I'd liken that to why you like some one in real life, sometimes you can't put your finger on it. You just see someone and know you want to be with them, it's kinda the same with dolls. I'll just see one and know they have to come home. :)

    5. What makes me fall in love with a doll is the eyes, they have to have soulful eyes. But if they have pouty lips that sets it over the top! I don't know I just love a sad faced doll. And another must but not a complet deal breaker is I realy like expressive hands...

    6. Definitely the aesthetics of the doll. BJDs are the first dolls ivs ever seen (and only) with such a pleasing, realistic aesthetic while still maintaining a safe perimeter without getting really creepy into real human territory. The customization is a plus. The fact that face UPS and eyes and wigs can be changed make them amazing to me.

    7. What I look for is the face. Usually I like dolls with open mouths or with teeth and nice lips. Along with a good nose and hooded eyes! . My sard, Unoa Lusis akubi, citron blue have teeth. My Msdolls have the lovely hooded eyes and full lips. All my sooms have beautiful lips and noses. Also my volks cristal has a hint of a smile. I admit though when I first began collecting I wasn't so particular only in the last 3 years have I really pinned a preference down. XD

    8. I usually goes for dolls that look boyish, sweet & soft?!
I prefer bodies that are lean, not muscular..
I like MSD the best, but I do have other sizes.

    9. Actually, I have a fairly limited choice in dolls because how picky I am. I focus on price, ears and size. It makes finding dolls hard but so much cheaper on my wallet

    10. The hand, the legs, the face and the lips <3

    11. It's so interesting to hear how people pick their dolls!
Hope no one minds if I post here after the new year . . .
If a doll has an expression that makes it look like it could come to life at any second, it's usually a doll that I like. It's that balance point between "realistic" and "stylized." I suppose expressive eyes are really what makes or breaks a deal for me. Bodies would be the second factor. It has to be a poseable work of art that will look and feel like it's worth the price. In the end, it's the overall package that helps me decide whether or not I like a doll.

    12. I always look at the face first, just the overall feeling that the face gives me. If it's ok, then I look at the nose, I don't like those really pointy or skinny noses, they look too fake. I also look at the shape of the face. I look at the eyes and lips last, but they do have to be a certain type for me to like. If all is good, I then look at the body. The body must have a good shape. I don't care as much about mobility, but they must be double-jointed. I also have a thing for hands, and so very pretty hands will attract me.

So...I'm actually pretty picky about dolls :P

    13. Oh man I really love the child-like sculpts- im not so much for the larger maturer dolls!
That being said I'm usually scoping out tinies and perhaps the 27-30cm dolls.

The elfkin is both cheap and gorgeously childish- he's a great one for me to start off with! I just love his button nose and big cheeks and cute lips :V

    14. The sculpt, I like weird and different. If they have a third eye or are just really strange it's most likely on my wishlist.

    15. Well, first for me is an adorable kitty face- I adore cat anthros! As for my humans, I like "cat-like" looks-slender, long limbs, angular faces and large eyes.

    16. A common answer, but it's the sculpt for me too... I like to see the faces plain, before they have a face-up or any modding. If they capture my attention, then they're probably a good fit for me :)

    17. Definitly the face and what kind of emotion/expression I can get from it. I love when the same doll can give a pouty, sad look one moment and with the tilt of the head look smug and arrogant!
Body is important too. Some companies have the most beautiful sculpts to me but I don't like the bodies they're on and that can get frustrating!

    18. I chose two of my dolls because they were the absolute embodiment of my idealised image of how a goddess and fairy would look ..as depicted in classical paintings!

But I've actually been a little surprised at myself by a couple of dolls I've been drawn to purchase! One, because I wasn't considering a child sculpt at all, and if I had been this probably wouldn't have been a sculpt I'd have chosen ...so I'd have to say I was seduced by the overall pkg of the full set. And the other, because I absolutely fell in love with a sculpt that is so completely oopposite in looks to what I'm attracted to in people, or relate to in myself.

ETA- but on a general note ..facial sculpt would (ordinarily) take precedence over any other consideration, ie. if I really love the face I'd buy the doll even if I don't like the body type.

    19. Posability. For pretty, I can buy a statue for a whole lot less. Or sculpt my own, which I've also done. What the BJDs have that's unique is body language. The three dolls I have are all Fairyland, LTF, Pukipuki and CLines, and they all pose like crazy. Anything larger, the weight of the resin just overpowers the tensile strength of the elastic. That determines the basic doll, then it's the sculpt. What I look for in a sculpt is versatility. The Shiwoo LTF is absolute perfection because the face can take on almost any expression depending on the angle and lighting. The puki pukisha is just cute-on-a-half-shell, and the Rou and Lishe CLines are for me the strongest male and female CLine sculpts. I haven't done their faceups yet, so how they're going to photograph expression-wise is still a mystery.

I admire many of the extreme expressions, but since I want my dolls to tell stories, the extreme expressions w/b a "sometimes" face, not the "default" face. i.e. If I find myself unable to resist a "committed" expression sculpt, I'm sure the first thing I'll do is look for a head that can be turned into the same face but with a more generic expression.

    20. Bought my first one because she was in my price range + beautiful + available in tan skin + had adorable droopy elf ears. She was an intersection of a few perfect things.
Fantasy colors are really my #1 consideration right now. After looking at other Bobobie/Resinsoul dolls, I decided to get my next from them because I want to build a family unit of 3 characters from mythology. One of them has bright blue skin, which BBB/RS does wonderfully, and the third (their daughter) has lighter blue skin, because she's a mix of Mom and Dad...and BBB/RS does that as well. Score! I got lucky there, because I do not want to play with dyeing.

I've found that looking at/working with mainly BBB dolls so far has accustomed me to the wider face shape that they tend to use, so now dolls with very narrow faces put me off, and I gravitate towards sculpts with...er...a decent amount of head ( I guess you could say.) :sweat

Also, smiles!!!! I like smiley, happy dolls!! :fangirl:
