1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What defines ABJD?

Nov 26, 2005

    1. yeah, it's really just an issue of style. ^_^....

I know that some people would like some other stuff to be included, and I feel you, I really do, as borders and lines are really starting to blend in the doll worlds!

.... but really it comes down to the moderators choosing what they think is best. Obviously, you're free to make suggestions, but this particular matter, I don't think we'll be changing our mind about.

    2. So, help us, as members, figure out, what that border IS, exactly.....

    3. I think, we've already stated that in the rules. if there is a particular doll you're unclear on, feel free to ask and we'll try to figure out where it stands, ok? ^_^....

    4. Fair enough.

      Can Soom Uyoo be here?
And if so, where does she fall, in terms of a forum, for discussion?

      Hugs,
      g

    5. I do ABJD and 1/6th. :) I love both.

For the, the main difference between ABJD and fashion dolls isn't necessary style or media. Really, it's in spirit. :)

For me, with fashion dolls/1:6th, I usually only customize them once. I'll do the face and hair, and then leave it. (Unless I drmataically improve my skills or want to reuse the doll for another project). I think that's typical of most fashion dolls. You do the customization or buy them customized, and then from there you generally make them your own by dressing them or styling their hair.

By contrast, ABJD are intended for continual customization. Change the wig, eyes, repaint the face, restring the body to your preferred tension. Whatever. Parts are usually interchangeable within a company, and sometimes between companies. I personally hate pulling heads off of 1/6ths.

I don't think that the marketplace would change because of Uyoo. She's not the first 1/6th scale BJD - there are Unolas and Phantomdolls. Many tinies can wear 1/6th clothes, wigs, or eyes. Heck, some minis can even wear fashion doll clothes!

    6. link to Soom Uyoo please? and if it's unclear the mods will talk about it privately and get back to you.

if she is similar to Unola, then it's fine.

    7. ^_^ they're fine! they're perfectly in style with the forum... they're just small ABJDs

    8. Thank you Aimee!

gayle bow's deeply, I thought they should be!!..
      Thank you, thank you..
So, now, what forum do they correctly belong in?

      hugs in advance....

    9. I'd say tiny as she'd tower slightly over my Cory.

    10. yup, tiny is fine. anything smaller than MSD (roughly) fits in tiny ^_^... just remember to post gallery posts in the gallery.

    11. Okie dokie, I am starting a Uyoo thread in tinies!

      Thanks DoA Angels:)

    12. wow, this is great stuff. I honestly half expected to return to this thread and cringe when I saw what I had started. I was dreading an argument or flames. It's fantastic to see the level of discussion that has been carried on here in a mature and intelligent way. *phew*

A funny thought hit me while I was out for the day regarding this thread.

what if the fashion doll people are making posts asking if they should let us bjd people post our dolls on their boards since they do fit into the fashion doll sizing.. but they're not made of vinyl and they have glass eyes

I'm curious if my Narae and Uyoo would fit into their concept of what a fashion doll is, could I start selling clothing modelled on them to the 'other' side *chuckle* ...... the lines becoming blurred, where's my pigeon hole I want back into my nice little well defined safe and secure hole

Don't think that Gayle, the sewing machine, hasn't thought about this one....

Uyoo, fits the bill, but, what we like in BJD fashion, is a WORLD apart from the FD world..OMG...
      trust me, I been there,

BJD is WAY more relaxed, and fun....

    14. Along with the eyes not being interchangeable, my biggest problem with the Sybarites are that they can't stand on their own. From what I understand, the only shoes that fit them are the ones they sale. Wouldn't the simple fact that they can't stand on their own without shoes make them different than the ABJD's? Part of the many reasons I love my bjd's is they can stand on their own. I don't know, anyone else know about their feet?

    15. Well, again, Sybarites are OT for this forum, so I would like to steer this thread away from discussing them.

    16. Incidentally, I've been wondering - Obitsu 60cms and DDIFs aren't really ball-jointed or strung, so aren't they technically off-topic even though DD1s are accepted here? Not that I'm trying to get anyone's doll excluded or something, I've just been wondering.

(And the line's been blurred for years as far as easy customization goes - Dollfie Plus/EB Beauty heads from Volks are designed to take acrylic/glass eyes and wear wigs. I couldn't paint eyes on or root hair into my EB Beauty A's head if I wanted to. However she's clearly offtopic as she's not strung or balljointed and her focus, while on being customized, clearly isn't intended to be the same as a BJD, even though I treat her the same and she thinks she's just as good... XD )

    17. This was a great overall description kittyaz! The emotion you feel from an ABJD is very apparent and is meant to be - and is definitely in the minds of their creators when they're sculpted. They are meant to have expression, look at you appealingly, come to life right when you open the box. And sooooo many different faces. From what I've seen of the fashion dolls (and I LOVE my Gene cos of her 'classic' look) they are mostly the same face mold, more cookie cutter if you will. It's allll about the clothes with them because, well, they are like models! Like runway models when they make up all the models in the same color schemes to display the designs depending on the vibe. And that's great too. It's just one is meant for one thing and another something else. I look at the new Uyoo and you just KNOW by looking at her she's of the ABJD arena....even tho particulars cross the line, you just KNOW....ya know? She's got that expressive lively little mischievious face. Character. That's it...it's allll about the character! :-D

    18. Obitsu 60cms and DDIIs may not be strung together by elastic, but remember that being "strung" isn't the sole denominator of being an ABJD. Similarly, look at Unolas--they snap together, the pieces! (Or...at least, I think they do. Not totally sure, not having one myself, but that's what it looks like from the kit pics I've seen.)

DDII is pretty obviously just the "improved" version of the DDI, with the same aim and focus as DDI, so of course they're well at home here. As for Obitsu, well, they're still 60cm and have that same focus and intent of customization as DDs. ^.^

I always thought it was a little odd that Unolas were welcomed here, since to me they seem more similar to Dollfie Pluses than to the dolls generally permitted on this forum (except for that nifty eye mechanism, they seem about the same to me--they're 27cm-ish, aren't resin, and aren't strung together), but since I don't have one and don't really desire one, I just shrugged it off.

If Dollfie Pluses were welcomed here, then the forum would probably expand exponentially and then there'd be all sorts of suggestions and arguments vabout why other 27cm dollfies aren't allowed, and everything would get out of hand...so I understand that the line has to be drawn where it's drawn, and pretty firmly maintained.

I'm just glad that Mini Gem will be allowed here. ^.^

    19. Same, I'm glad About Uyoo!
This topic is really interesting. I had the same question because I'm into making my first bjd but not Asian styled (I mean not meant to be customized) so I wasn't allowed to post in "Artist" section, wich I totally understand. The line is sometimes really thin between bj artdolls, abjd and fashion bjd ... I have a question: does someone know a forum for fashion bjd? And for bjd artdolls ? Or maybe one that allows all bjds ? If it is not allowed to post a link her please pm me !
